How you take your coffee could lower your risk of death, according to new study

Cream? Sugar? Oat milk? The way you took your coffee could lengthen or shorten your life, the study suggests
Britain is most famously known as a tea-drinking nation, but over the years, many of us have graduated to coffee - and the beverage's popularity is only growing.
In the UK, we now drink approximately 98million cups of coffee per day, according to the British Coffee Association, and in all forms, too. Whether it's with sugar, creamer, oat milk or regular milk - the possibilities are endless.

However, what if we told you drinking coffee a certain way could help you live longer? You're probably not pouring your morning cup for the long-term health benefits, but coffee has recently been linked to lower risk of mortality.

In a new observational study, researchers from the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University found the association between coffee consumption and mortality risk changes with the amount of sweeteners and saturated fat added to the beverage.
The study, published online in The Journal of Nutrition, found that consumption of one to two cups of caffeinated coffee per day was linked to a lower risk of death from all causes and death from cardiovascular disease.
Black coffee and coffee with low levels of added sugar and saturated fat were associated with a 14 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality as compared to no coffee consumption.
The same link was not observed for coffee with high amounts of added sugar and saturated fat.
"Coffee is among the most-consumed beverages in the world... [so] it's important for us to know what it might mean for health,' said Fang Fang Zhang, senior author of the study and the Neely Family Professor at the Friedman School.

"The health benefits of coffee might be attributable to its bioactive compounds, but our results suggest that the addition of sugar and saturated fat may reduce the mortality benefits."
The study, carried out in the US, analysed data from nine consecutive cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018, linked to National Death Index Mortality Data.
The study included 46,000 adults aged 20 years and older who completed valid first-day 24-hour dietary recalls.

Coffee consumption was categorised by type (caffeinated or decaffeinated), sugar, and saturated fat content. Mortality outcomes included all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
Low added sugar (from granulated sugar, honey, and syrup) was defined as under 5 per cent of the Daily Value, which is 2.5 grams per eight-ounce cup or approximately half a teaspoon of sugar.

Low saturated fat (from milk, cream, and half-and-half) was defined as five per cent of the Daily Value, or one gram per eight-ounce cup or the equivalent of five tablespoons of two per cent milk, one tablespoon of light cream, or one tablespoon of half-and-half.
The study shows that drinking at least one cup per day resulted in a 16 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality. At two to three cups per day, the link rose to 17 per cent.

Drinking more than three cups per day was not associated with additional reductions, and the link between coffee and a lower risk of death by cardiovascular disease weakened when coffee consumption was more than three cups per day. No significant associations were seen between coffee consumption and cancer mortality.
'Few studies have examined how coffee additives could impact the link between coffee consumption and mortality risk," said first author Bingjie Zhou.
"Our study is among the first to quantify how much sweetener and saturated fat are being added."

Millions more Americans could be classified as obese under a shocking new measurement from Europe. Researchers in Israel analyzed data on 44,000 adults in the US, including nearly 15,000 marked as overweight using existing methods. But under the new framework, they found some 18.8 percent of overweight adults, or one in five, were re-classified as obese. Overall, this translated into America having an obesity rate of 54.2 percent, or a new record. The US already has the highest obesity rate out of any large country. In the new method from Europe, researchers still consider anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 kg/m2 as obese. But they also re-classify anyone who is overweight (a BMI or 25 to 29.9 kg/m2) and has an obesity-related condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure, into the category. Researchers said the new definition reveals the overall toll of obesity in the nation, and the surging number of people already suffering from obesity-related conditions like stroke, heart disease and early death. It also revealed how millions who consider themselves 'just a little overweight' could now be suffering from a weight-related complication. About 42.4 percent of adults in the US are obese, while 30.7 percent, or one in three, are considered overweight. For the study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers analyzed data from NHANES, an annual survey tracking participants, including their BMI and underlying conditions. Participants had all submitted data between 1999 and 2018, and were aged 43.4 years old on average. About half were women. The study found that using BMI alone, about 35.4 percent of participants were considered obese, while 33.3 percent were considered overweight and 31.3 percent were considered to be a healthy weight. But after using the new method, developed by The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), a total of 54.2 percent were defined as obese. Of the individuals moved from the overweight to the obese category, they were more likely to be older, with an average age of 51.3 years compared to 36.5 years among those in the overweight category. They were also more likely to be male, and to have at least one underlying condition, with 57.5 percent having one underlying condition like diabetes compared to 34.3 percent in the overweight group. Among the conditions, high blood pressure (79 percent of the group) was most common, followed by arthritis (33.2 percent) and diabetes (15.6 percent). EASO published its new framework in July last year, and some countries, including Ireland and the Netherlands, have already adopted parts of it. The framework recommends surgeons calculate a patient's BMI and then assess underlying health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Under the guidelines, anyone whose BMI is above 30 kg/m2 is automatically classified as obese. But those who are overweight, with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 kg/m2, and have at least one obesity-related health condition are also considered obese. The framework has not been adopted by other major organizations like the World Health Organization, which still recommends using BMI. It can help someone to be defined as obese because it may lead to them being targeted for early interventions to prevent complications like heart disease or stroke. It could also make it easier for them to access medications like Ozempic and help the patient recognize that they may need care. For the study, researchers also analyzed participants for their mortality risk, or risk of death. They found those who were redefined as obese had a similar mortality risk to those who were overweight, but a 50 percent higher risk than those of the healthy weight. In the study, the researchers wrote that the EASO framework may provide a 'more sensitive tool for diagnosing obesity disease earlier'. It added that some people may have experienced unintentional weight loss due to underlying conditions, which may previously have led them to be included in the overweight category.

WASHINGTON — Ticks can be active in any season and it's important to check for and remove the bloodsuckers as quickly as possible — especially after you've been outside hiking, gardening or enjoying nature. 'Humans are outside more in summer so we hear about more tick infections,' said Sam Telford, an infectious diseases expert at Tufts University. But he urges caution year-round because 'every season is tick season.' While tick populations vary a lot regionally, some Northeastern states including Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are seeing 'above average' numbers of American dog ticks this year, said Telford. And New York state is seeing a higher number of reported deer tick bites this year than last year, said Saravanan Thangamani, who studies tick-borne diseases at SUNY Upstate Medical University. How ticks can spread disease Ticks, like mosquitos, need to feed on blood. But instead of a quick prick, they are slow feeders — with hooked mouth parts that attach into the skin of deer, rabbits, dogs and people. There are many different species of ticks found globally and only some spread germs that can make people sick. A main worry is blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, which can spread Lyme disease. Once found mainly in New England and pockets of the Midwest, the ticks are now present over a wider range. A tick bite doesn't always lead to illness. 'If you remove a tick within 24 hours of attachment, it's fairly unlikely that you will get infected,' said Telford. How to check for ticks Ticks are usually found low to the ground, in leaf litter or grassy areas. Check your clothing for ticks and do a full-body check including under the arms and behind ears, knees and hair. 'If you're out all day long, try to do a quick check for ticks every few hours,' said Bobbi Pritt at the Mayo Clinic. 'When you go back inside, take a shower. That will wash off any unattached ticks, and you're also more likely to spot any other ticks.' Use tweezers to remove the tick and grasp it as close to the skin as possible to pull from the head. If you don't have them handy, you can also use your fingernails, the edge of a credit card or any semi-sharp object. How to keep ticks away The best approach is to minimize tick exposure altogether. Bug sprays containing ingredients such as DEET can be sprayed on exposed skin to ward off ticks and mosquitos, said Telford. Wear long sleeves and pants, and you can also spray clothing with repellents containing permethrin, a chemical similar to a natural ingredient in chrysanthemums that makes ticks avoid the flowers. Protect your pets from ticks Don't forget to pay attention to outdoor pets. Medications can prevent fleas and ticks from attaching to a dog's skin. But it's still a good idea to check the fur after being outside. 'Wherever pets can't easily groom themselves, that's where the ticks will be — on the ears, around the muzzle area, under the collar, between the toes,' said Thangamani. Dogs and cats roaming outdoors can also bring ticks into the house. 'If pets bring ticks in, a tick can live in the house for months until it finds its next blood meal,' which could be another household member, he said. What to do after a tick bite After removing the tick, keep an eye on the skin around the bite. If a rash or flu-like symptoms appear within several days or weeks, see a doctor.
