Centre sanctions 42 road projects in K'taka; state cleared 27: Satish Jarkiholi
Satish Jarkiholi
clarified that a total of 42 road projects were sanctioned by the Centre in coordination with the state government. Of these, the state granted full clearances for 27 projects, including land acquisition and transfer to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Clearance is pending for the remaining 15 projects, which, the minister said, will be resolved shortly.
He was speaking at a media interaction programme organised by Belagavi media association at Vartha Bhavan on Wednesday. Jarkiholi also alleged that the Centre dropped a previously sanctioned flyover project for Belagavi due to opposition from local BJP leaders. "The project was announced by minister Nitin Gadkari, but was later withdrawn.
However, the state govt has decided to take up the project with its own funds.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah will lay the foundation stone in Oct," he announced.
Amlan Aditya Biswas appointed
In a move to enhance efficiency, Jarkiholi said senior IAS officer Amlan Aditya Biswas has been appointed as the principal secretary of the department. "I specifically requested his appointment to bring discipline and a long-term vision to the department," he noted.

Contractor dues being cleared
Responding to the concerns about pending contractor bills, the minister criticised the previous BJP govt for issuing work orders worth Rs 12,000 crore without budgetary allocations. "We are clearing these dues in phases. Most bills below Rs 1 crore have already been settled. We are balancing ongoing development with financial discipline," he explained.
Jarkiholi also provided an update on major development works in Belagavi.
He said the land acquisition for Belagavi-Dharwad new railway line is complete, while 80% of land acquisition for Belagavi Ring Road is done. A new Rs 10 crore sports complex is under construction at Ramtirth Nagar. A multi-speciality govt hospital is ready for inauguration, and 257 new Anganwadis have been sanctioned.
He further mentioned that traffic between Belagavi and Goa has improved following the completion of Belagavi-Goa highway via Chorla. However, he acknowledged that the road is only 5.5 metres wide—and cannot be expanded due to its passage through a sensitive forest area. Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait was also present.

"These trees, located along the periphery of the parking area, need to be removed to create a 6-metre space for the movement of emergency vehicles, in accordance with building norms," said an MCD official. "After clearing the trees, the fire services no-objection will be sought." The facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 63.7 crore, consists of a shuttle or robo parker style parking which involves using automated systems and robots to park and retrieve vehicles. It is space-efficient and convenient. The facility, equipped with four lifts, will be fully automatic with no manual intervention. Built on a 2,240 sqm plot, the parking has the ground floor and eight floors above it, offering space to park 399 cars. While the construction began three years ago, MCD sought permission to fell the trees over a year ago. The civic body received anticipatory approval from the fire service and continued the work. "The footfall at the market is heavy most of the time. It is common to see many vehicles parked on the roadsides, leading to inconvenience to others," said a local resident. "To resolve the problem, construction of the parking lot was taken up on a portion of the surface parking site and work began in March 2022 with an 18-month deadline but it was breached in Sept 2023. " Since the project is taking time to finish, the shop owners have requested opening up space for a few cars to park. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to an official, under the project terms, the concessionaire building the facility will operate and maintain the automated shuttle parking at the market for 10 years and transfer 70% of the money collected as parking fees to MCD. The municipal corporation pointed out that stack and puzzle parking lots can accommodate a larger number of vehicles within a compact space compared with other parking types. Moreover, they can be assembled more quickly and developed at a lower cost than conventional parking facilities. In such projects, the concessionaire responsible for constructing the parking lot can operate it for a minimum of one year.
