2025 Emmy nominations: ‘Severance' leads with 27, ‘The Studio' tops comedy with 23
Severance will take on Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Slow Horses and The White Lotus for Best Drama Series. It also earned key bids for Best Actor (Adam Scott), Best Drama Actress (Britt Lower), a trio of Best Drama Supporting Actors (Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro), and Best Drama Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). The series was also nominated for Best Drama Writing and earned two slots in the Best Drama Directing category.

The Studio is up against reigning Emmy champ, Hacks, for Best Comedy Series along with Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, and What We Do in the Shadows. The Studio's windfall of nominations also includes Best Comedy Actor (Seth Rogen), Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O'Hara), and Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Ike Barinholtz). The comedy is also up for both writing and directing.
HBO's The Penguin was the top Limited Series, earning 24 nominations — including bids for Best Actor (Colin Farrell), Best Actress (Cristin Milioti), and Best Supporting Actress (Deirdre O'Connell). The series also scored two directing nods and one for writing. The Penguin will face off against Adolescence, Black Mirror, Dying for Sex, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story for Best Limited Series.
The full list of nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards was revealed 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 am PT. What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén and Running Point star Brenda Song announced the nominees alongside TV Academy Chair Cris Abrego, during a live ceremony streaming on Emmys.com/nominations.
This season, the Emmy Awards marks its 77th anniversary. What began as a modest ceremony with five awards at the Hollywood Athletic Club has evolved into television's biggest night, celebrating excellence throughout the industry. In the age of "peak TV" with 600 original scripted series, the nominations recognize the writers, directors, performers, and all the artisans who worked on television and streaming programs in the past year.

The Last of Us fans are all eagerly waiting to see what happens after that jaw-dropping Season 2 cliffhanger, but we're going to have to brace ourselves as the wait is going to be long. HBO's The Last of Us is officially on pause for a while, and Season 3 might not hit screens until 2027. In a recent interview with Variety, HBO and Max content chairman Casey Bloys confirmed the news and explained why the delay is happening. 'The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that.' This uncertainty stems from the ambitious story the series is about to tackle, the most divisive chapter of the games. The creative team is wrestling with how to adapt the dense narrative of The Last of Us Part II , a challenge that's even more complicated now that Neil Druckmann, the game's creator and series co-creator, has stepped back from active involvement. 'Obviously, it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning,' Bloys explained. 'The whole reason that I wanted to do Last of Us is after Chernobyl , I said to Craig, 'what do you want to do next?' And Last of Us was what he wanted to do. It was fantastic to have Neil involved. 'A lot of people don't realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It's a really big job that he's got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he's given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we'll be in excellent shape. I'm not worried at all.' Season 3 is set to adapt the section of the game that split the fandom in half… Abby Anderson's story. Played by Kaitlyn Dever, Abby will take center stage as the show rewinds events to show Seattle from her perspective as a member of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Her arc will dig into her motivations, her complicated past, and the brutal conflict between the WLF and the Seraphites, giving fans a deeper dive into the factions and their leaders than the game ever did. It's going to be really interesting to see how the audience reacts to this because it asks them to invest in the character responsible for killing Joel, the most beloved characters in the franchise. The showrunners have said they're fully committed to this narrative gamble. So, while it sounds like Season 3 is shaping up to be just as ambitious and emotionally devastating as fans expect, we're going to be waiting a long time to see it.

It's impossible to imagine 'The Gilded Age' without Morgan Spector as George Russell, but the actor initially had his doubts. 'It's funny, I had watched 'Downton,' but I didn't think that I would be able to do it,' Spector says of creator Julian Fellowes' previous hit 'Downton Abbey.' 'I didn't think I would play in the world that Julian makes, for whatever reason. And so then when I auditioned for it and tried the material on, I was like, 'Oh, this is actually fun.' There's a kind of Old Hollywood classical glamour to this that is very pleasurable to play.' The historical drama, set in the 1880s boom period of New York City, is a softer viewing experience than even 'Downton' was, and certainly than the average Sunday night HBO program. 'Often when I see things on HBO that are period, they're like, 'OK, we're going to do period drama, but there's going to be horrific violence, or it's going to be the dirty underbelly of the world you've seen before.' And this is not what this is really about,' Spector says. 'It's a much gentler universe, but it's interesting. Maybe it's the times we're living in, but I think people have gravitated to, I don't want to say the low stakes, I feel like actually this season especially, there are real stakes. But it's something where you could just enjoy the writing and the costumes of the world, and it's not going to leave you with a gnawing feeling of horror in your stomach on the way.' The 44-year-old actor is Mr. Russell, a new money railroad mogul who, with his wife Bertha (Carrie Coon) and two children, ascends the ranks of New York old money society. 'The most fun is that I get to work with Carrie Coon so much,' Spector says of his onscreen wife. 'I have loved building this marriage with her and this season sort of testing that marriage with her, but just getting to act with an actor who is that good makes you better and makes it so that even the days where you turn up and you have to just do three pages of exposition, it's a pleasure.' 'George has a kind of modernity to him in a lot of ways in terms of how he treats his wife, how he treats his daughter,' Spector continues. 'There's a kind of contemporary sensitivity that I can connect to. And then there's also this sort of period patriarch quality to him, which in terms of an act of historical imagination is also fun to play. He's not going to be as in touch with his feelings. He's not going to be as willing to kind of accept doubt or weakness in self as maybe I would be. There's a lot about investigating 19th-century masculinity that I think is fascinating.' The upcoming season, which debuts on Sundays on HBO through Aug. 10, will see George take on more financial risks with his business life, and at home, his daughter Gladys's potential marriage presents many questions. 'There's a lot at stake over the course of this season, for sure,' Spector says. Netflix delivers another strong performance in second quarter while following a familiar script
SAN FRANCISCO -- Netflix on Thursday announced another quarter of steady growth as the video streaming service's more than 300 million subscribers have become increasingly attractive to advertisers. It's a familiar script that Netflix has followed for the past three years to widen its lead in video streaming while delivering financial results that have usually easily exceeded the analyst projections that steer investors. While Netflix's profit eclipsed Wall Street's expectations by a wide margin in the April-June quarter, its revenue came in right around the bar set by analysts. The Los Gatos, California, company earned $3.1 billion, or $7.19 per share, a 46% increase from the same time last year. Revenue rose 16% to $11.08 billion. Management also slightly raised its revenue forecast for the entire year, citing a belief that its programming lineup will reel in more subscribers in the second half than the first. Netflix's shares slipped 1% in extended trading, indicating investors expected an even more robust performance. But that is a minor stumble, given Netflix's stock price has soared 43% this year. The stock's strong run began during the second half of 2022 when the company introduced a low-priced version of its service with commercial interruptions as an antidote to an abrupt downturn in subscribers. The video streaming service is also faring well in Hollywood, as evidenced by the 120 Emmy nominations showered upon its programs earlier this week – second only to Warner Bros. Discovery's HBO Max. In the past quarter, Netflix hailed 'Sirens,' 'Ginny & Georgia' and 'The Four Seasons' as being among its most watched programming. The popularity of Netflix's scripted programming combined with weekly World Wrestling Entertainment spectacles, high-profile boxing matches and periodic National Football League games have enabled its service to retain subscribers while its prices rise, including on the cheapest tier. Netflix stopped providing quarterly updates on its total subscribers at the beginning of this year, but the company's revenue growth leaves no doubt that the number has grown from the 302 million reported at the end of 2024. It's gradually turning into an advertising magnet, too. Although Netflix still isn't selling enough commercials to require a disclosure of its advertising revenue, management continues to highlight the growth in its results. Netflix said its ad revenue for this year is on pace to double from last year.
