Family of Greg Monks gather for funeral as mourners donate to children's charity
Greg Monks sadly died after he vanished hours into a stag do in the party resort of Albufeira in the Algarve. A funeral has taken place for a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal. Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished just hours into a stag do with his pals in the Algarve party resort of Albufeira. The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on Wednesday, June 4. Police believe Greg became lost while attempting to find his way back to his hotel and tragically fell to his death. His devastated family, including his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home without his body as they waited for repatriation. His family and loved ones gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes today. The service was also shown in the East Chapel and live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person. Mourners were asked to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids instead of bringing flowers. Those celebrating Greg's life spoke after the service. Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg." On Monday evening before his funeral, loved ones gathered for an emotional balloon release at Fullarton Park in Glasgow. Attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg. Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, previously spoke to the Daily Record about the agony of losing her brother – but said the family were grateful for some sense of closure. She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. "We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves." Greg had travelled to Albufeira for a five-day stag do, where he was due to be a groomsman. However, just hours into the trip he became separated from the group on the strip. The last sighting of him was captured in a quiet residential area around three miles from the main strip. Jillian has urged groups heading abroad to look after one another and stay together. She said: 'In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. 'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.' A fundraiser launched during the search – and later used to help with repatriation - has raised more than £34,000, showing just how loved Greg was by all who knew him.

Following successful fundraising activities in previous years, which have seen Aberdein Considine employees raise more than £80,000 for various worthy causes since 2022, the firm is set to pull out all the stops in 2025 to support Scotland's disadvantaged children and young people. Team members from throughout the firm, which has 21 offices and more than 450 staff across Scotland and the north of England, will undertake a variety of challenges in 2025, including long-distance bike rides, marathons and a talent show, as they raise money for the two charity partners. She said: 'Aberdein Considine has a strong presence across Scotland, but we know that being part of a community is about so much more than just having an office on the high street. This is why we selected the Russell Anderson Foundation and Cash for Kids, two charities that support children and young people close to home and across the UK, as our 2025 charity partners. Members of the team - including former Dons captain and 11-times Scotland player Russell Anderson himself, who is an independent financial planner with Aberdein Considine Wealth - will then join bp's Coast 2 Coast charity cycle from Dumbarton to Aberdeen, with staff also taking part in the Ellon Pedal Car Race, both in June 2025. Karayn Chisholm, Corporate Fundraiser for Cash for Kids, said: 'We are thrilled to have been chosen as a charity partner for 2025, and we're excited to work with such a dedicated and passionate team. The fundraising plans already in motion are both inspiring and ambitious, and we look forward to bringing them to life together. 'The support of Aberdein Considine will make a real and lasting difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in our local communities. With their help, we will be able to reach even more children and young people – helping them to feel supported, valued, and empowered to build brighter futures. We can't wait to see what we can achieve together.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Russell Anderson Foundation Chief Executive, Graeme Burnett, said: 'We are eternally grateful to Aberdein Considine for selecting RAF as one of the company's charity partners for 2025 as we rely heavily on the generosity of organisations in order to deliver our programmes which are quite literally transforming the lives of youngsters in the most socially deprived areas of the city.' Further events across the year will include a charity quiz and various runs across the North-east of Scotland. Jacqueline Law continued: 'We have been blown away by the level of support shown across the firm for our previous charity partners, with members of our teams giving up countless hours to take part in events, challenges and activities for good causes, and this year will be no different.' The firm also offers colleagues a day each year to take part in charitable work or volunteering, in whatever capacity they can, and encourages staff to use this day to give back to their local community.
