Motorcyclist killed, pillion rider hurt in Mersing crash
Mersing Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohd Shamsuri Shafai said they received a distress call at 12.20am about the incident at Jalan Ismail, in front of Taman Laut Mersing.
'A total of eight firemen and two fire engines were deployed to the scene, located about 1km away, to carry out rescue operations.
'The accident involved a motorcycle that skidded into a drain.
'A woman was found dead at the scene, while a 23-year-old woman sustained injuries and was (taken to the hospital) for treatment,' he said in a statement.
Shamsuri added that the victim's body was handed over to the police for further action.
When contacted, Mersing OCPD Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani confirmed the incident.
'Preliminary investigations found that the motorcycle was attempting to overtake a car that was turning right into a junction but failed, hitting the rear of the vehicle before skidding off the road.
'The victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pillion rider sustained injuries to the left thigh and is receiving treatment at Hospital Mersing.
"The 51-year-old car driver was uninjured,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Dead man found in ravine in Tapah

College student killed in crash on Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway
KUALA LUMPUR: A college student was killed after the motorcycle he was riding was involved in an accident with a car at Km289.9 of the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway, heading towards the capital, last night. Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the incident occurred at around 9.15pm when a Perodua Bezza, driven by a 30-year-old man, was travelling from Seremban towards Kuala Lumpur. He said investigations found that the car driver had slowed down in the middle lane due to an earlier accident ahead. "As a result of the accident, the motorcyclist, a 22-year-old victim, sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene," he said in a statement. Naazron said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving.
