Do you prefer booking trips through a travel agent or on your own?
I like to have input and give direction, but I'm terrible at booking, so I need help. And it saves time.

Thoughts on an 'unplugged' vacation?
Books and books. Sitting by the beach on the water. And without our phones, except for taking pictures.

What has been your worst vacation experience?
Turbulence over the Pacific on a flight to Fiji about 25 years ago. I was white-knuckling it and saying a few prayers.
What is your favorite childhood travel memory?
We didn't really have a chance to take vacations as a kid — my mom had her hands full with the five of us kids — but we did go every day to the beach, either to Hampton or Plum Island (Sandy Point). My favorite memory is being on my grandfather's shoulders in the water and jumping off, and him teaching us to body surf.
Do you vacation to relax, to learn, or for the adventure of it all?
All of the above. I do really love to absorb the sensibility, history, and culture of the place. I try to avoid touristy locations and seek out where the locals go. You learn more about a place that way, but you also get a better memory.

What book do you plan on bringing with you to read on your next vacation?
Oprah leaves a hotel during celebrations for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos's wedding in Venice Saturday.
Luigi Costantini/Associated Press
If you could travel with one famous person/celebrity, who would it be?
Oprah. Number one, because she's been everywhere, knows everyone, and would have the best recommendations. And number two, is there a person with a better aura to travel with and be around than her?
What is the best gift to give a traveler?
A book about the place they're going – more a travelogue type book than a guidebook – but something that gives them a sense of the place.
What is your go-to snack for a flight or a road trip?
Honey mustard pretzels.
What is the coolest souvenir you've picked up on a vacation?
A Koa Outrigger canoe paddle given to me by a Hawaiian racer.
What is your favorite app/website for travel?
I love using TripAdvisor for suggestions on where to go and what to do. Not only is it a Needham-based company, but I find it to be a helpful tool for discovering new things in new places.
What has travel taught you?
Traveling is knowledge and it's learning. Learning about new places, cultures, people, and ways of living. Travel has opened my eyes to the world and also has given me a broader perspective and understanding of the human condition.
What is your best travel tip?
Follow the locals. And always bring back something – even if it's small and inexpensive – but that has meaning to you and reminds you of that travel experience.

Trending tickers: latest investor updates on TripAdvisor, Bitmine, WolfSpeed, BYD and AstraZeneca

Shares in TripAdvisor (TRIP) were in the red in after hours trading after surging by 16% in Thursday's session as it was revealed by the Wall Street Journal that activist investor Starboard Value has built a 9% stake in the online travel-review company. Starboard Value, an investment firm run by Jeff Smith, has a stake valued at around $160m (£117m), which would make it one of the top shareholders in the company. Tripadvisor (TRIP) shares have been flat since the start of the year after plunging more than 30% in 2024. Last year, the travel review and booking company said it created a special committee to explore potential options. Read more: FTSE 100 LIVE: Markets down as Trump's controversial tax bill passes, tariff worries persist Starboard Value has gained a reputation for pushing for changes such as new CEOs and cost cuts by acquiring significant shares in companies. The firm has pushed for changes at pharmaceutical company Pfizer (PFE) and design-software maker Autodesk (ADSK). Bitcoin miner Bitmine (BMNR) lost over 10% in after hours trading after surging by 130% in the previous session as it revealed a $250m private placement offering to fund an Ethereum (ETH-USD) treasury strategy. Thomas Lee, chairman of Bitmine (BMNR), said that stablecoins are 'the 'ChatGPT' of crypto' and that he expects ether (ETH-USD) to appreciate thanks to their adoption. 'Ethereum is the blockchain where the majority of stablecoin payments are transacted […] and thus, ETH should benefit from this growth,' he said. Until this month, the firm's treasury strategy focused on accumulating bitcoin (BTC-USD). News that Wall Street strategist Tom Lee is joining Bitmine (BMNR) in a push to make Ethereum's ether (ETH-USD) token central to Bitmine's crypto holdings has helped kick off a massive rally for the stock. The company's share price is up roughly 2,450% over the last week. Shares in Wolfspeed (WOLF) fell in after hours trading on Friday, pulling back after a surge of more than 50% following the semiconductor company's unexpected Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, a move that is typically interpreted as a sign of financial distress. The market reaction stood in stark contrast to the usual response to insolvency announcements. Analysts said the sharp rally likely reflected a combination of speculative interest and investor optimism over the company's restructuring plan. Rather than signalling a collapse, Wolfspeed's (WOLF) bankruptcy filing is being framed by management as a strategic reset. The creditor-backed plan will reduce the company's debt by $4.6bn and cut annual interest expenses by 60%, according to the firm. Read more: The most popular stocks and funds investors bought in June With over 97% of senior secured noteholders already on board, Wolfspeed (WOLF) said it expects to emerge from bankruptcy by the end of the third quarter with $1.3bn in liquidity to support its operations. Investors are betting that the leaner capital structure will allow the NYSE-listed group to refocus on its core silicon carbide business, a key component in electric vehicles and next-generation power electronics, and eventually restore its competitive position in the market. Shares in BYD (BYD) slipped in Hong Kong trading on Friday, as investors digested reports that Beijing may be preparing to intervene in the intensifying price war that has gripped China's electric vehicle (EV) sector. The world's largest EV maker reported a 31% increase in sales for the first half of the year, delivering 2.1 million vehicles, according to a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Nearly half of those were pure electric models, with the remainder made up of plug-in hybrids. The company stopped producing internal combustion engine vehicles in 2022. Despite the strong headline figures, pressure on margins has grown. BYD (BYD) came under criticism in late May after launching another round of price cuts, prompting several rivals to follow suit. In a thinly veiled rebuke, the chairman of Great Wall Motors warned that the sector 'could come under threat if it continues on the same trajectory'. Read more: Key investing trends in June, from defence stocks to Tesla's sales slump The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has also weighed in, urging fair competition and healthy development of the industry, and noting that major discounts by a single automaker had triggered a new price war panic. Investors appeared to interpret the comments as a signal that authorities may take a more active role in calming the market, potentially through new regulation or coordinated guidance. Shares in AstraZeneca (AZN.L) edged lower in London on Friday, despite the drugmaker securing a significant regulatory milestone for its cancer portfolio. The European Commission has approved Imfinzi for use before and after surgery in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, making it the first immunotherapy cleared for this indication in Europe. The approval follows clinical trial results showing the drug reduced the risk of recurrence by 32% and cut the risk of death by 25%. After two years, 82% of patients treated with Imfinzi were still alive. Michiel Van der Heijden, who led the research, said this approach could be a game changer, as nearly half of patients normally see their cancer return even after chemo and surgery. Despite the positive data, AstraZeneca (AZN.L) shares have come under pressure in recent days amid reports that chief executive Pascal Soriot has privately floated the idea of relocating the company's headquarters to the US. AstraZeneca, the UK's most valuable listed company, has long criticised the domestic investment climate. In January, it scrapped plans to invest £450m in a vaccine manufacturing facility in northern England, citing a reduction in government support. A move to shift its primary listing overseas would be a fresh blow to the London Stock Exchange (LSEG.L), which has struggled to retain several high-profile companies in the face of transatlantic valuation gaps. This Friday, US markets are closed for the Independence Day holiday.

A couple transformed a 20-year-old school bus into a mobile home and traveled the country's parks: 'It's not for the lazy'

Scott Heltz had always hoped to give up his day job one day, buy an RV, and explore the country. When the New Orleans-based electrician met his partner, Shaquita Riley, in 2019, he finally found someone to do it with. But Riley had a slightly different idea. She suggested buying an old school bus and converting it into a mobile home, or a "skoolie." Heltz, who loves building things, was intrigued. There was more room to rebuild and customize an old bus than an RV. Within six months of meeting, Heltz and Riley bought a 2004 school bus for about $3,000. "The biggest thing for me was traveling," Heltz, 55, told Business Insider. "I always wanted to travel." Heltz estimates the couple spent about $40,000 renovating the bus over the course of three years. They cut off the roof and raised it, installed new sheet metal, and tore out the old interior, replacing it with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, eating area, and lots of colorful art. "The day I put the toilet in the bus, my wife ran out and bought a mattress, and she never spent another night in the house," Heltz said. The couple left New Orleans in 2023 and haven't looked back. Since then, Heltz and Riley — and their two dogs and two cats — have traveled the American West, mostly working and camping in state and national parks. These days, they're living in their bus in southern Arizona and hoping to settle down. They're not alone. A growing number of Americans are giving up their brick-and-mortar homes and traveling the country in RVs and skoolies, working in exchange for a place to park and a modest hourly wage. Some are older people retiring on the cheap, others are families looking to expose their kids to the country, and still others are living in vehicles to avoid high rents or homelessness. Skoolie life isn't for everyone Heltz stressed that the skoolie life isn't as glamorous as some influencers and others make it out to be. There are mechanical issues to deal with, insurance can be expensive, and living in tight quarters and working menial jobs in parks can be tough. "There were times when I definitely questioned why I was cleaning toilets instead of doing something that I was made to do," he said. The lifestyle also came with a significant pay cut for Heltz. But the bus hasn't given them much trouble, and their expenses have been relatively low. "Bus life got real romanticized for a while," Heltz said. "It's not for the lazy. It's not for people that aren't self-sufficient." He added, "It's not just throwing a futon in a bus and driving around the country and seeing things. You've still got to live. You've still got to survive. You've still got to pay bills." Are you work-camping or finding creative ways to save on housing costs? Reach out to this reporter at erelman@ They're not planning on living in the bus forever. Last year, the couple, who aren't legally married but plan to wed this year, bought 20 acres of land in Douglas, Arizona, a small town on the border of Mexico, where they want to build a container home and live off the land. Riley wants to become a turkey farmer and raise a slew of other farm animals, while Heltz wants to build his own solar power station so they can live largely off the grid. They've cleared the area where they'd like to build the house, and they've built a driveway, but they're still working on getting a well on the property — a crucial feature in the southwestern desert. In the meantime, they're living in their bus in an RV park in Sierra Vista, Arizona, about 50 miles from their property. Heltz is working for an RV dealer, where he repairs vehicles. He's hoping he'll be able to start his own business repairing mobile homes. Riley recently completed her BA and is working towards becoming a therapist. "We'll see how it goes. It's kind of day by day," Heltz said. "But we do have a plan."
