Seen outside BJP leader's house in Rajkot, public benches with Surat inscription spark political row in Gujarat
Spotted outside the house of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Rajkot's Old Pipaliya village, the inscription on these stone benches indicate they are from Surat. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that the benches, which were to be allotted to the citizens of Surat, had reached directly to Rajkot, a minister in Gujarat government said the benches were old and insisted that they were still being used for the public.
The AAP, meanwhile, said it would approach the Surat district collector, seeking action in the matter.
The controversy began on Friday evening, when AAP Corporator of Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) ward no. 17, Vipul Suhagiya, uploaded photos and videos of six benches parked outside the main gate of a house.
Written in Gujarati, the inscriptions on the benches say they were 'allotted from MLA Praful Pansheriya from Kamrej seat (Surat), grant year 2016-17, and MP Prabhubhai Vasava from Bardoli (Surat), grant year 2022-23'.
Pansheriya is now a Minister of State for Primary, Secondary and Higher Education with the Gujarat government.
In the social media post, Suhagiya alleged that the benches were transported from Surat to Rajkot by BJP leader Bharat Vadodariya, and had been placed outside his house. Vadodariya had contested the 2021 SMC election but lost.
Suhagiya told The Indian Express, 'I got the videos and photos from my friend who is a resident of Old Pipaliya village. He told me that the benches were placed outside the house of Vadodariya, who hails from the village and is settled in Surat City. The purpose of posting such videos and photos on social media is to ensure that government officials are aware of where the benches allotted through MP and MLA grants and funds are being allocated. If Vadodariya wanted benches, he should have asked the elected MLA or MP of his native village.'
Suhagiya further added, 'We (AAP) will complain about this issue to the Surat district collector next week.'
When contacted, Minister Pansheriya said, 'I have also come across such videos and photos, and it is from my last term. Generally, we provide benches for people to sit in a (housing) society in Surat city. Somebody may have taken such old benches from some society in Surat city and transported them to their native village. Even there, the benches are kept on a paver block path, and are not being privately used. Even there, they are meant for public use.'
Talking to The Indian Express, Bardoli BJP MP Prabhu Vasava said, 'A mistake has been made by those who had taken such benches to Rajkot. It is the responsibility of the government officials, and I am hopeful that they will start a probe in this connection.'
Vadodariya could not be reached for comment on the issue.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be in Patna on Wednesday for a "chakka jam" against the new labour code and special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar Press Trust of India Patna Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be in Patna on Wednesday for a "chakka jam" against the new labour code and special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, leaders of the INDIA bloc said. The announcement was made on Monday at a press conference, which was attended by Leader of the Opposition in the assembly Tejashwi Yadav, state Congress president Rajesh Kumar, AICC in charge for Bihar Krishna Allavaru, and leaders of Left parties. Kumar said Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, will join the protesters in the state capital, where a march has been proposed to the office of the Election Commission. Yadav said, "We will be with Gandhi in Patna, but the stir will be held across Bihar. We are extending support to the chakka jam against the labour code which is as much an assault on democracy as the revision of electoral rolls." He also alleged that the special intensive revision, which will be complete in less than a month from now, has so far been mired in "confusion" and accused the EC of trying to help the ruling BJP-led NDA through the exercise. EC should take cognisance of violent incidents in Bihar: Mayawati
The recent sensational murder of BJP leader and industrialist Gopal Khemka in Patna has stirred political tensions in Bihar, the former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati said Press Trust of India Lucknow BSP chief Mayawati on Monday said the Election Commission should take cognisance of incidents of violence in Bihar, including the murder of Patna-based businessman Gopal Khemka, for the conduct of peaceful elections in the state. In a post on X, she spoke about the "deteriorating" law and order situation in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls later this year. "The recent sensational murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent industrialist and leader of the ruling party BJP, in Patna, has heated up the politics of the state in a new way," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said. "If the Election Commission takes cognisance of this bloodshed and appropriate action right now, it will be better for conducting peaceful elections," she said. Khemka was shot dead by an unidentified armed assailant outside his house in Gandhi Maidan locality of Patna on Friday as he was about to alight from his car. His mortal remains were consigned to flames at Gulbi Ghat in Patna on Sunday. A large number of businessmen and industrialists attended Khemka's cremation. Mayawati sought to know who was behind the violent incidents in Bihar. "Not only is the coalition government of the state in the dock regarding this, but the politics is also quite heated on this issue. What effect will this have on the political equations and elections of the state in the future, it remains to be seen," Mayawati said. She also said that her party will fight the Bihar Assembly on its own strength. "An appeal is made to the Election Commission that whatever strict steps are needed to be taken to free the Bihar elections from misuse of government machinery as well as muscle power, money power and criminal power etc., then it must be taken on time so that the election campaign proves to be free and fair," the BSP chief said on X. Karnataka shocker: BJP MLA's son fires at Laxmidevi fair; faces suo motu case
A controversy erupted in Gokak, Karnataka, after Santosh Jarkiholi, son of BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, discharged a firearm during the Laxmidevi fair BELAGAVI: A gunshot fired by BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi's son Santosh Jarkiholi during Laxmidevi fair in Karnataka's Gokak town triggered public criticism and a police probe. A five-second video widely circulated on Saturday, showing Santosh firing a double-barrel shotgun into the air amid packed crowds. Supporters are heard cheering. Police registered a suo motu case under the Arms Act. Unconfirmed reports claimed more rounds were fired, but no additional footage has surfaced. "We are examining the video, identifying the weapon, and verifying how many rounds were fired," Belagavi SP Dr Bhimashankar Guled said. Some residents voiced concern, calling the firing disruptive during a spiritual event being held after a 10-year hiatus. Others defended the gesture as part of a long-standing tradition. "Ceremonial firing has always been a part of the fair," said Prabhakar Chavan. "Earlier held every 10 years, the fair now occurs every five."
