Harris Yulin, prolific actor known for ‘Scarface,' ‘Training Day' and ‘Frasier,' dies at 87

Harris Yulin, the veteran stage and screen actor whose career notably included roles in 'Scarface,' 'Training Day' and 'Ghostbusters II,' has died. He was 87.
Yulin died Tuesday of cardiac arrest in New York, his manager Sue Leibman and his family confirmed in a statement to The Times on Thursday. He was 'part of the vanguard of a generation who cared passionately about the craft of acting — this deep, lifelong dedication led to extraordinary, resonant performances that were a gift to audiences, the actors he worked with, and the art of acting itself,' said the statement, which also remembered the Los Angeles native as an 'avid birder and lover of the sea.'
Born Nov. 5, 1937, Yulin enjoyed a varied screen acting career that spanned multiple decades and spawned more than 100 credits, according to IMDb. In film he portrayed a corrupt Los Angeles official in cahoots with Denzel Washington's immoral narcotics officer in 'Training Day,' a dismissive judge who oversees the court case against the supernatural sleuths in 'Ghostbusters II,' and a detective interested in doing business with Al Pacino's Tony Montana in 'Scarface.'
Yulin counted numerous TV series among his credits, including 'WIOU,' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' '24,' 'Nikita' and 'Veep.' In the final decade of his life, he also appeared in Netflix series 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' and 'Ozark.' In 1996 he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for guest actor in a comedy for his appearance as crime boss Jerome Belasco in the hit NBC series 'Frasier.'
Beyond TV and film, Yulin pursued a prolific career on stage with included Broadway productions of 'Hedda Gabler,' 'The Price,' 'The Visit,' and 'Watch on the Rhine' and off-Broadway shows of 'Hamlet,' 'Arts and Leisure' and 'Rain Dance.' Throughout his career, Yulin brought his talents to the Court Theater and Goodman Theater in Chicago, the Gate Theatre in Dublin and the Bay Street Theater in New York. Yulin was also a stage director who oversaw productions of several plays, including 'The Glass Menagerie,' 'The Trip to Bountiful,' 'This Lime Tree Bower,' 'Men's Lives' and 'The Man Who Came to Dinner.'
Yule was also an instructor who taught at Juilliard, Columbia University and at HB Studio. He continued working on new projects up until his death, including the MGM+ series 'American Classic,' starring Kevin Kline, Laura Linney and Jon Tenney. Deadline reported that the series began production on the East Coast and Yulin was preparing to begin shooting his role this week. His role will be recast.
Series co-creator and executive producer Michael Hoffman mourned Yulin in a statement:'[He] was very simply one of the greatest artists I have ever encountered.'
Hoffman, who worked with Yulin on the 2005 film 'Game 6,' added: 'His marriage of immense technique with an always fresh sense of discovery, gave his work an immediacy and vitality and purity I've experienced nowhere else,' Hoffman said. 'And what he was as an actor, he was as a man, the grace, the humility, the generosity. All of us at 'American Classic' have been blessed by our experience with him. He will always remain the beating heart of our show.'
Yulin is survived by his wife Kristen Lowman, son-in-law Ted Mineo, nephew Martin Crane and godchildren Marco and Lara Greenberg. He was preceded in death by his daughter Claire Lucido. A memorial will be held at a later date.

KPOP DEMON HUNTERS: Netflix is Building a Franchise With Sequels, a Series, and Even a Stage Musical — GeekTyrant

Looks like Huntrix isn't hanging up their mic or demon-slaying weapons anytime soon. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have a surprise mega-hit on their hands with KPop Demon Hunters . The stylish animated adventure about a K-Pop girl group who battle demons in secret has not only dominated the streaming charts, it's now Netflix's most-watched animated movie, racking up more than 26 million views just last week. With fans hooked on the music, characters, and supernatural chaos, Netflix is wasting no time turning this into a full-blown franchise. According to a report from The Wrap, KPop Demon Hunters is just getting started. Netflix is reportedly planning multiple sequels that will form a full trilogy. But that's just the beginning. The streamer also has ambitions for a live-action remake, a live-action stage musical, and even a TV series set in the world of Huntrix. Internally, Netflix is treating the property like their very own Frozen , recognizing its potential as a multi-platform juggernaut. If you've seen the movie, you might wonder how there's more story to tell. The first film wraps up with Rumi, Mira, and Zoey defeating the demonic boy band Saja Boys in a climactic finale, and Rumi finally accepting her own demon blood. But as we all know in genre storytelling, defeating one evil usually just clears the stage for another. Huntrix's world clearly has more supernatural threats lurking, and more K-Pop bangers to unleash. The success isn't limited to just views. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack is also crushing it. It debuted at number one on Billboard's Soundtracks chart and came in at number eight across all albums. That's a big win for an animated film with no theatrical release, at least not yet. No theatrical plans have been confirmed, but with this level of success, it wouldn't be surprising to see one of the sequels hit theaters. Between the music, action, and heart, Huntrix has struck a chord with audiences around the world. And it looks like Netflix is ready to make sure fans get a lot more of this demon-slaying idol group in the years to come.

Netflix Sets ‘Nouvelle Vague' Awards Season Release Dates — Theatrical and Streaming — and Categories (Exclusive)

Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater's loving homage to Jean Luc-Godard's 1960 film Breathless and the French New Wave, which received a 10-minute standing ovation and rave reviews following its world premiere at May's Cannes Film Festival, will be released in American theaters on Oct. 31 and play on big screens for two weeks before dropping on Netflix on Nov. 14, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. When Netflix acquired Nouvelle Vague's U.S. rights shortly after Cannes, some reacted with surprise and dismay that a movie shot on film and about cinema would end up with a streamer. But the company is planning a robust theatrical release that will include not only screens in New York (where, appropriately enough, it owns the historic Paris Theater) and LA, but in all of the top 10 U.S. markets. In my humble opinion, it could well end up a finalist for best picture, a category in which non-English-language films have landed many noms in recent years (including France's Netflix-distributed Emilia Pérez earlier this year); best director (Linklater is a beloved auteur, but his only nom in the category came for 2014's Boyhood); and screenplay (it has yet to be determined if Holly Gent, Laetitia Masson and Vincent Palmo Jr.'s script will be classified as adapted or original). Meanwhile, Zoey Deutch, who is luminous as Breathless star Jean Seberg, will be campaigned in the supporting actress race, while French actors Guillaume Marbeck and Aubry Dullin, who eerily resemble the characters they play — Godard and Breathless breakout Jean-Paul Belmondo — will be pushed for lead actor and supporting actor, respectively. The big question moving forward is whether or not France will select Nouvelle Vague as its entry for the best international feature Oscar competition. Each country's submission is determined by a selection committee comprised mostly of people associated with that country's film industry, who must attest that 'creative control of the film was largely in the hands of citizens, residents, or individuals with refugee or asylum status in the submitting country.' The key word is 'largely.' In the case of Nouvelle Vague, Linklater and Deutch are American, but almost everyone else who worked in front of or behind the camera is French, including the film's two producers, Laurent Pétin and Michèle Pétin, so the film is certainly eligible. Plus, its financing came from France; it was shot in France; it premiered in France; and it is an out-and-out celebration of French cinema. Some selection committees are hesitant to submit a film directed by someone born outside of their country's borders, feeling that doing so would be a missed opportunity to highlight homegrown talent. But other countries enter whichever film they think offers them the best shot at actually landing an Oscar nom. For instance, Japan put forward — and landed a nom in 2024 for — German filmmaker Wim Wenders' Perfect Days. Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland has had films entered by Poland, West Germany and the Czech Republic. And twice in the last decade, France itself submitted films by non-French filmmakers: Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven's Elle in 2016 and Italian filmmaker Filippo Neneghetti's Two of Us in 2020. France, however, has had bruising experiences with its last two submissions. In 2024, it entered The Taste of Things instead of Anatomy of a Fall; ultimately, the former was not nominated, while the latter went on to five other noms (best picture, director, original screenplay, actress and film editing), suggesting that it almost certainly would have been nominated for — and might have even won — best international feature had it been entered. And in 2025, its submission Emilia Pérez looked certain to bring the country its first win in the category since Indochine prevailed in 1993, but its prospects imploded shortly before the final round of voting, thanks to the exposure of problematic social media posts from its principal star, and it ultimately lost. Again, Emilia Pérez was handled by Netflix, so you can be sure that the company is hungry for another chance to get a French film across the finish line in the best international feature Oscar race. (In just the last six years, it backed two films from other countries that went on to win that prize, Mexico's Roma in 2019 and Germany's All Quiet on the Western Front in 2023.) But the decision about whether or not it will have that opportunity is ultimately France's, or at least the French selection committee's. Given that no other French film has emerged this year, so far, that would appear to offer the nation a better shot than Nouvelle Vague at landing a best international feature Oscar nom, and possibly even a win, it will be very interesting to see how France's selection committee plays it cards. Netflix Reveals 10-Title Colombia Slate Featuring True Crime, Franchise Finales and Political Drama

Netflix has unveiled a diverse slate of 10 new Colombian productions set to debut over the coming year, as the streamer continues to expand its investment in local-language storytelling across Latin America. The new titles span a mix of original dramas, returning series, and nonfiction projects, including the conclusion of several established franchises and dramatizations of real-life events from Colombia's recent past. The company's continued local push in Colombia comes as anticipation builds for the second and final season of its adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, expected to debut sometime next year. Directed by Jayro Bustamante, Edgar Nito and Samir Olivares, with Natalia Santa serving as showrunner, the series revisits the 27-hour standoff and its long-lasting national impact. The show is produced by Bogotá-based studio Dynamo. Several popular Netflix franchises will also conclude with upcoming seasons. Medusa, one of Netflix Colombia's most-watched dramas of 2025, will return for a second and final season next year, featuring new cast members Juan Pablo Urrego and Karen Martínez. Created by TIS Productions, the show follows a power struggle within a fractured family led by protagonist Bárbara (Juana Acosta). Eva Lasting (La Primera Vez) — billed as Netflix's first Colombian franchise — will also wrap with its fourth season. Set in the 1980s, the coming-of-age drama centers on a group of teenagers navigating romance and upheaval amid political unrest. The series is produced by Caracol Televisión. Other scripted projects include Fugue State 1986 (Estado de Fuga), inspired by a real-life mass shooting carried out by Vietnam War veteran Campo Elías Delgado in Bogotá. Directed by Carlos Moreno and Claudia Pedraza, the series explores the relationship between two literature students whose shared fascination with violence leads to tragedy. The show is produced by AG Studios. Netflix also continues to explore nonfiction with a three-part docuseries centered on Colombian football star James Rodríguez. Directed by Simon Brand and produced by Clover Studios, the series tracks Rodríguez's career from his early club stints through the 2024 Copa América and into the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup. Additional scripted titles in the slate include The Guest (La Huésped), a family drama revolving around political ambitions and a destabilizing houseguest; Just Alice (Simplemente Alicia), a dark comedy about a woman balancing two marriages; and the final season of Fake Profile (Perfil Falso), a glossy thriller centered on revenge and deception within a luxury resort setting. One feature film is also included in the slate. Susana and Elvira, produced by Pulsar Studios and directed by María Gamboa, will follow two women navigating a high-stakes wedding amid personal and professional crises. The project reunites actresses Manuela González and Mabel Moreno, reprising roles from an earlier series. A theatrical release is planned ahead of its arrival on Netflix. Netflix launched in Colombia nearly 15 years ago as the service rolled out across Latin America and the Caribbean in the fall of 2011. It has been commissioning and releasing Colombian originals since 2018 and achieved a major early global success with the Pablo Escobar saga Narcos. Though produced in the U.S., the show was widely filmed in Colombia and remains one of the most streamed series globally, underscoring Colombia's role in Netflix's early international growth. One Hundred Years of Solitude, released in December 2024, is arguably the company's most acclaimed and high-profile fully Colombian title.
