India undertook plantations over 93.7 lakh ha of land in last 5 years: Govt
Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said the government is currently carrying out afforestation and tree plantation under the overarching theme of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign launched on June 5, 2024.
The initiative aims to increase the country's green cover through voluntary planting of trees involving a 'Whole of Government" and 'Whole of Society" approach.
Singh said afforestation is being implemented through the existing schemes such as the National Mission for Green India, Nagar Van Yojana, Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitat and Tangible Benefits (MISHTI), and the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), along with specific state-funded programmes.
'There is no new scheme on the anvil," Singh said.
According to official data, Uttar Pradesh led the country by conducting plantations over 23.49 lakh hectares from 2020-21 to 2024-25, followed by Telangana with 15.50 lakh hectares and Gujarat with 11.38 lakh hectares.
The other major contributors included Odisha (5.03 lakh hectares), Andhra Pradesh (5.86 lakh hectares), Rajasthan (3.78 lakh hectares) and Madhya Pradesh (4.05 lakh hectares).
The total plantation area across all states and UTs stood at 93.77 lakh hectares during the period.
Singh said the survival rate of the planted trees is 'dynamic" and depends on factors such as soil quality, climatic conditions, water availability, grazing, fire, pest attacks and post-plantation care.
Regular assessments are carried out by the state forest departments, with corrective maintenance measures taken when necessary.
A comparison of forest and tree cover between the India State of Forest Reports 2019 and 2023 shows an increase of 20,080.95 sq km in the country, he said.
On whether any mandatory rule is being considered for tree plantation during building construction approvals, Singh said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006, and its amendments already mandate tree plantation for certain categories of projects.
The terms of reference for EIA study require a greenbelt and landscaping plan, while environmental clearances include binding conditions for greenbelt development in addition to compensatory planting for any trees removed, he said. The ministry, along with states and UTs, also encourages voluntary plantations and provides necessary support wherever applicable.
The minister said tree plantation, including those carried out on special occasions, is monitored through a multi-tiered mechanism involving both state and Central agencies.
States and UTs conduct physical verification and submit geo-tagged photographs and .kml files of the plantation sites to the ministry. PTI GVS ARI

Derabassi rated most polluted city in region, 9th worst in country
1 2 Mohali: Derabassi, a town in Punjab located barely 20 km from Chandigarh, emerged as the most polluted city in the entire region of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. More alarmingly, it now ranks ninth among India's worst cities in terms of air quality deterioration, according to data tabled in the Lok Sabha under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Responding to a query raised by MPs Anil Yeshwant Desai and Babu Singh Kushwaha, minister of state Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the House that while 103 out of 130 cities covered under NCAP showed improvement in PM10 levels since the programme's launch in January 2019, Derabassi showed a significant deterioration. The data reveals that the average PM10 concentration in Derabassi increased from 88 µg/m3 in 2017–18 to 98 µg/m3 in 2024–25, registering an 11.4% rise. This makes Derabassi the worst-performing city in the region and places it among the bottom ten cities nationwide. Only eight cities across India fared worse, with Aurangabad recording the sharpest increase of 33.4% in PM10 levels. Chandigarh, despite its status as a well-planned city, showed no improvement over the years, with PM10 levels stagnating at 114 µg/m3, indicating a lack of progress in implementing air quality measures. In contrast, cities such as Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Khanna have shown the most improvement in Punjab. Jalandhar saw a 44.4% drop in PM10 levels, from 178 µg/m3 in 2017–18 to 99 µg/m3 in 2024–25. Amritsar followed with a 40.7% reduction (from 189 to 112 µg/m3), while Khanna recorded a 28.9% improvement (from 142 to 101 µg/m3). Launched in 2019, the NCAP aims to reduce air pollution levels in 130 non-attainment cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Under the programme, each city was required to prepare and implement a Clean Air Action Plan addressing major pollution sources such as vehicular emissions, construction and demolition activities, road dust, waste burning, and industrial pollutants. Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh also clarified that air quality data across cities and countries cannot be compared directly due to differences in geography, weather patterns, and national air quality standards. Despite these variations, the data shows that 103 cities showed improvement in PM10 levels between 2017–18 and 2024–25. Of these, 64 cities achieved a reduction of more than 20%, 25 cities recorded a drop of over 40%, and 22 cities managed to meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), maintaining PM10 levels below 60 µg/m3. CBSE class 12 compartment result 2025 declared: Step-by-step guide to check score at cbseresults.nic.in
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class 12 compartment exam results for 2025 on August 1. Students who appeared for the exams can view their scores at The compartment exams were held on 15 July 2025 in India and 26 other countries.(PTI) This year, 1,43,581 students registered for the Class 12 compartment exams, and 1,38,666 appeared. Out of these, 53,201 students passed. The overall pass percentage stands at 38.36%. From foreign schools, 918 students appeared and 486 passed, making the pass rate 52.94%. As usual, girls performed better than boys. The pass percentage for girls was 41.35%, while boys recorded 36.79%. In the Children With Special Needs (CWSN) category, 278 students registered and 273 appeared. Of them, 137 passed, resulting in a pass rate of 50.18%. The CBSE Class 12 marksheet will show the student's name, subject-wise marks in theory and practicals, total score, and whether the student passed or failed. The compartment exams were held on July 15, 2025 in India and 26 other countries. Results were released in under two weeks. Earlier this year, CBSE declared the regular Class 10 and 12 board results on May 13. For Class 12, 17,04,367 students had registered, 16,92,794 appeared, and 14,96,307 passed. 2 coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near Kanpur
Kanpur, Aug 1(PTI) Two coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near the Panki area between Kanpur and Tundla on Friday, railways said. The incident, which occurred on the busy Delhi-Howrah route, caused a major disruption to train services. According to railway chief public relations officer Shashi Kant Tripathi, the sixth and seventh coaches from the engine came off the tracks with a loud jolt. 'The train was travelling at a low speed at the time, which averted a major tragedy," he said. A few passengers sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene, he added. Passengers who witnessed the incident reported feeling the coaches being suddenly tilted, causing panic. Technical teams and a medical van were immediately dispatched to the site to begin rescue and restoration operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi deployed a team of police force police to supervise the rescue efforts and control the crowd. The derailment disrupted train movement on the Delhi-Howrah route, forcing the North Central Railway (NCR) to divert multiple trains. Normal train movement is expected to resume following the completion of track clearance and a thorough safety inspection, Tripathi said.
