Jathedar meets Rajoana, calls for unity ahead of Op Bluestar aniv
Following the meeting, Jathedar Gargaj slammed the government's 'discriminatory' stance regarding Rajoana's release and commutation of death sentence.
'This must be confronted with united resistance from the panth (community). Sikh prisoners, who have completed their terms have not been released and it is a clear indication of the government's apathetic attitude towards Sikhs,' the jathedar said.
Rajoana, a former Punjab Police constable, was sentenced to death in 2007 for his role as a backup bomber in the suicide attack in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995, that killed former CM Beant Singh and 16 others.
In 2012, Rajoana was scheduled for execution, but it was stayed after the SGPC filed a mercy plea on his behalf for commutation of the death sentence. Over the years, successive governments have cited national security concerns and the delicate political environment in Punjab as reasons for the delay in deciding the plea.
Replying to a query, the jathedar said that the June 6 Operation Bluestar anniversary should be observed with respect.
'The June 6 anniversary event should be observed with respect. All Sikhs must remain committed to upholding the dignity and sanctity of Akal Takht,' Gargaj said, without naming Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma, who had announced that they don't accept the present jathedar and will not let him deliver an address during the event.
Gargaj also said that Rajoana is also in favour of maintaining the maryada (code of conduct), and the respect of Akal Takht at all costs.
SAD senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Tuesday backed Giani Gargaj and said the June 6 event should be observed without any disruption.

Fortnight-long vigil launched ahead of I-Day: Punjab Police
A fortnight-long special operation has been launched to keep vigil around the criminal and anti-social elements keeping in mind the Independence Day celebrations, Punjab Police said on Saturday. As per the directions of director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the commissioners of police (CPs) and the senior superintendents of police (SSPs) have been instructed to heighten security measures, increase patrols and intensify night domination operations in their respective districts. The officers have also been instructed to keep a close watch on suspicious activities and individuals, and to take prompt action in case of any security breach, he said. Special DGP (law and order) Arpit Shukla said that in these two weeks, CPs and SSPs will conduct different operations on a regular basis, including anti-terrorist/gangster operations, checking of jails, setting up checkpoints at strategic locations, combing operations, etc. The officers have also been instructed to keep a close watch on suspicious activities and individuals, and to take prompt action in case of any security breach, he said. The special DGP has also issued directions to CPs and SSPs to bolster police presence at public venues and intensify surveillance and patrolling across critical areas in their respective jurisdictions. Officers have also been asked to increase the number of police checkpoints in their respective jurisdictions and ensure the checking of a maximum number of vehicles at every naka, which will help in curtailing terrorist and criminal activities, he added. Meanwhile, police teams continued its cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs on Day 154, and conducted raids at 481 locations on Saturday, leading to the arrest of 107 drug smugglers after registration of 80 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached 24,325 within 154 days. The Special DGP said that the raids have resulted in recovery of 13.9-kg heroin, 500-gm opium and ₹34,820 drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers. He informed that over 180 police teams, comprising over 1,300 police personnel under the supervision of 87 gazetted officers, conducted raids across the state and checked as many as 511 suspicious persons during the day-long operation.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Saturday called for a united effort with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka In a letter addressed to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka said the commemoration functions should be held jointly, reflecting the spirit of Panthic unity and honouring Guru Teg Bahadur's supreme sacrifice. 'Guru Teg Bahadur was martyred in Delhi for protection and religious freedom of Hindu religion. There are reports of separate events being planned by the DSGMC and the SGPC. Such a fragmented approach is not befitting the legacy of Guru Sahib,' Kalka stated in his letter. He reminded the SGPC of the past collective efforts that united the Sikh community — the 300th anniversary of Khalsa Foundation Day at Takht Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib) in 1999, the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Angad Dev, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019 at Sultanpur Lodhi and the tercentenary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib at Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded, in 2008. Kalka also requested that the commemoration include remembrance of Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dyala Ji, who were martyred alongside Guru Tegh Bahadur.
