Punjab Police tightens security, launches spl op ahead of I-Day 2025
All the commissioners of police (CPs) and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) have been instructed to heighten security measures, increase patrols, and intensify night domination operations in their respective districts.
Divulging details, special deupty general of police (DGP, law and order) Arpit Shukla said in these two weeks, CPs/SSPs will conduct different operations on a regular basis, including anti-terrorist/gangster operations, inspection of jails, deployment of nakas at strategic locations, and combing operations.
The CPs/SSPs have also been instructed to keep a close watch on suspicious activities and individuals and to take prompt action in case of any security breaches, he said.
The Special DGP has also issued directions to CPs/SSPs to bolster police presence at public venues and intensify surveillance and patrolling across critical areas in their respective jurisdictions. The officials have also been directed to increase the number of police checkpoints in their respective jurisdictions and ensure the checking of a maximum number of vehicles at every naka, which will help in curtailing terrorist and criminal activities, he added.

107 drug smugglers held
Meanwhile, police teams continued their cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs on Day 154, with raids conducted at 481 locations on Saturday, leading to the arrest of 107 drug smugglers after the registration of 80 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the total number of drug smugglers arrested reached 24,325 in 154 days. The Special DGP said the raids resulted in the recovery of 13.9 kg of heroin, 500 grams of opium, and Rs 34,820 in drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers.
He informed that over 180 police teams, comprising over 1,300 police personnel, under the supervision of 87 gazetted officers, conducted raids across the state and checked as many as 511 suspicious persons during the day-long operation.

Mining task force steps up surveillance, raids in JSR
1 2 Jamshedpur: Acting on the direction of DC Karn Satyarthi, the district mining task force has increased surveillance and raids to curb illegal mining, stocking and transportation of natural minerals. In the last six days, the task force has seized four trucks that were ferrying sand and stone chips illegally. Two trucks were seized from Mango and Kowali police station limits on July 29 and the other two trucks were seized from Azadnagar and Kadma police station limits on August 2 respectively. In all the four seizures, FIR have been lodged in accordance with the provisions of the Jharkhand Minerals (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Transportation and Storage) Rules 2017. District mining officer, Satish Nayak said that random raids at the suspected stocking sites and checking of documents of vehicles ferrying minerals is being done with greater frequency. Notably, the DC has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace at which the task force is doing its work in curbing illegal activities pertaining to mining and transportation of minerals. Delhi court sets aside magistrate order punishing accused for delay in furnishing bail bonds
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday set aside a judicial magistrate's order directing accused persons to stand in court with their hands straight in the air as punishment for wasting judicial time and failing to furnish their bail bonds in time. The court also advised the judicial officer concerned to properly read and understand the legal provisions before using his discretionary powers. "Without hearing, petitioners (accused) were asked to stand in the court till the rising of the court with their hands straight in the air. This kind of sentence is not contemplated in law," said the court. The order in question was passed by the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Saurabh Goyal in a criminal appeal (later treated as revision) filed by two accused, Kuldeep and Rakesh, challenging their conviction under Section 228 IPC (Intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding) and the punishment imposed by the magistrate court. Referring to Article 21 of the Constitution of India, Sessions Judge observed that the fundamental right to personal liberty can only be curtailed by a procedure established by law. "The object of law is to ensure that basic human rights are not violated. The judges are duty-bound to safeguard basic and natural rights meant for a dignified existence of individuals. Every person appearing before the court (even if involved in crime) has the inalienable right to live with dignity and is entitled to equal respect. The court also said that the concerned magistrate failed to note that new criminal laws came into effect on July 1, 2024, and that the proceedings conducted by the magistrate under the IPC were an incorrect application of law. The accused submitted before Sessions court that the punishment amounted to a gross misuse of the process of law and that they were convicted without being given an opportunity to show cause. The Sessions court noted that the complaint in question was pending before the magistrate and that on January 20, 2025, the accused were granted bail with directions to furnish personal and surety bonds. The matter was adjourned multiple times thereafter, and on May 6, 2025, they were again directed to furnish bail bonds with a warning that default would attract a cost of Rs 10,000. The court observed that the order of the concerned magistrate did not qualify the test of legality and propriety as, the court noted, non-furnishing of bail bonds by the accused persons cannot be termed as a contemptuous act by any stretch of interpretation.

Partygoers prefer hydroponic marijuana from Thailand: DRI
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Hydroponic marijuana from Thailand, considered 'poor man's cocaine', has become a preferred choice for rave parties in Bhubaneswar due to its affordability and cocaine-like hallucinogenic effect, according to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers. DRI sleuths caught four flyers from Bangkok at the city airport with a total of 40kg of hydroponic marijuana on July 29 and Saturday. DRI officers said the hydroponic variant, which is grown without soil, contains 30% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compared to 3% in regular marijuana. "The elevated THC content produces cocaine-like hallucinogenic effects, making it particularly attractive to party-goers. We are concerned about the growing trend and have intensified surveillance to curb its distribution in the city," a senior DRI officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity. DRI sleuths plan to bring the four arrested carriers on remand so that they can interrogate the accused and obtain details about their Odisha conduit, peddlers and the modus operandi being followed to distribute the drugs to consumers. "We have identified some persons in the Laxmi Sagar area, and they have a network of peddlers. Regarding places in Bangkok where the marijuana is processed, we have overseas personnel who are on the job to trace those locations. There should be awareness among people about the health hazards of the hydroponic marijuana that is available for use in parties. We will also take local help to catch small-time peddlers," the DRI officer added. The agency, through police assistance, may keep a watch on parties. Officers also said that whenever marijuana smuggling was detected in airports and other places in the recent past, its origin was traced to Bangkok. Passengers carrying the contraband managed to escape mechanical scanners and security personnel in Thailand. "Whether the handlers in Bangkok are in collusion with airport staff there is not yet ascertained," he said.
