I'll think about it, says KJ after Akmal offers to help with Umno return
KUALA LUMPUR : Khairy Jamaluddin has responded coolly to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's offer to help facilitate his return to the party.
'That's very nice of him,' he said briefly to reporters when met at a product launch event today.
'I'm thankful for his comments and support, and I'll certainly consider it.'
Yesterday, Akmal said he was open to facilitating the return of suspended and sacked Umno leaders such as Khairy, Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan.
'Those who were disciplined had contributed in ways we cannot forget. That's why I say unity in Umno is crucial, and that unity cannot come from just one side,' he was quoted as saying.
Akmal also said those who had been suspended or sacked must set aside their egos if they truly cared about the party.
Khairy, himself a former Umno Youth chief and ex-Rembau MP and health minister, was sacked from Umno in January 2023 over alleged disciplinary breaches.
The Sembrong Umno division has also passed a resolution urging the party leadership to lift the suspension of Hishammuddin.
However, the former Umno vice-president has hinted that he will not appeal his suspension as he had not been officially informed of his wrongdoing.

'This is the reality. Young voters have very high expectations. They want principled leaders – leaders who can be trusted, and who can strengthen ties among all communities,' he was quoted as saying. Johari said Umno must be more dynamic and open to remain relevant. 'Umno needs to accept the reality that securing a strong majority isn't an easy task, as voters now have diverse ideologies,' he said. 'Don't assume that we will always be the only ones in power. There are times when we must share power. We need to accept the fact that the world today is changing, finding a political party with a strong majority is no longer easy, as each has a different ideology,' he said.

Zahid confident BN-PH ties will lead to election success

GOPENG : Barisan Nasional is confident that the cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) can ensure they retain the seats won in the last general election, its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said it was based on observations and results of the Mahkota and Ayer Kuning by-elections. He pointed out that BN had secured the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in 2022, but managed to win with a majority of 20,648 votes in the by-election in 2023, thanks to the partnership with PH. 'The same with Ayer Kuning; at the general election, we won with a majority of 2,213 votes, then when the by-election happened, we won with a majority of 5,006 votes. That's the type of increase we can see from the cooperation with PH,' he said at the Gopeng Umno delegates' meeting here today. He said the cooperation with PH should be a guide and reflection for leaders and the grassroots as the strategy is sound and suitable to retain existing power. 'We cannot be proud and arrogant and want to go solo. This is the current reality and by cooperating with PH, we can also become dominant in the national political arena,' he said.

Zahid confirms no going solo, Umno to contest GE16 under BN

(Bernama pic) LUMUT : Umno will not contest the next general election on its own, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed today, saying the party will remain a component of Barisan Nasional for the elections. Umno would continue to contest the general election (GE16) under BN's dacing (scales) symbol without sidelining partners such as MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and its unity government partner Pakatan Harapan. Saying Umno had never contested on its own in the past, Zahid dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnerships with other parties in BN and with Pakatan Harapan. '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo,' he said at the Lumut Umno divisional meeting today. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH … that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had also stated that the party would not go solo at the general election as the party had never done so despite the changing political dynamics.
