Dingdong Dantes tapped as ambassador for 'Panatag Pilipinas' disaster risk communication campaign

Dingdong Dantes will serve as ambassador for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)'s new campaign, "Panatag Pilipinas," which is aimed at expanding the knowledge of Filipinos in responding to calamities and disasters. According to Athena Imperial's report on "24 Oras," Wednesday, the Philippines' geographic location in the Pacific Ring of Fire makes the country particularly susceptible to various natural calamities. To enhance public action and preparedness for these events, the OCD initiated the Risk Communication Advocacy campaign. Initially available on online platforms, the "Panatag Pilipinas" campaign is expanding its reach significantly and will now be screened in cinemas and public spaces such as transport terminals. "These are very important venues where we can exchange or show itong ating mga mensahe," OCD Asec. Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said. "I appreciate the fact that it is now a multimedia campaign. One of the goals is also to make it accessible, to make it, of course, relatable and not intimidating," Dingdong said. During the program launch, Department of Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum stressed the critical role of science in hands-on disaster preparedness. "It is with your action that makes science more powerful and practical. The greatest strength lies in knowing when and how to utilize these tools effectively," he said. The Department of National Defense (DND) also stressed the importance of making actions during disasters a muscle memory for safety. "Our message remains clear and powerful: Alam ng Pinoy ang dapat gawin para maging ligtas sa panahon ng sakuna. These efforts must not only happen during times of disaster, they must begin before disaster strikes," DND USec. Irineo Espino said. —Carby Rose Basina/MGP, GMA Integrated News

OWWA: 21 OFWs from Israel to arrive in PH on July 3

Twenty-one overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Israel are set to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Thursday, July 3, 2025, as part of the ongoing government repatriation program in response to tensions in the Middle East. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan confirmed the arrival and emphasized the Philippine government's continued commitment to monitoring and assisting OFWs affected by the regional conflict. 'Bukas po, may paparating po tayo na 21 pa na galing Israel at sa Sabado po may parating na 15 at inaasahan pa tayong 28 na darating," Cuanan said at the Bagong Pilipinas public briefing on Wednesday. (Tomorrow, 21 OFWs from Israel will be arriving, with 15 more expected on Saturday and 28 more in the coming days.) Since tensions escalated in Israel, over 373 OFWs have contacted OWWA to express their intention to return home, though only 26 have finalized their decision to be repatriated as of this week. 'Pero after namin sila tawag-tawagan sa OWWA, kami nga ang nangungulit, ay 26 pa lang ang repatriated o nag-desisyon na bumalik sa Pilipinas,' said Cuanan. (But after following up with them—it's really us who are persistently checking—only 26 have actually been repatriated or decided to return to the Philippines.) Administrator Cuanan assured that despite a ceasefire and the lowering of Israel's alert level to 2, the Philippine government continues to monitor developments across the Middle East, particularly in countries with large Filipino populations such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait. 'Patuloy na nagmo-monitor ang gobyerno sa sitwasyon sa Gitnang Silangan... Marami tayong kababayan sa Israel, almost more than 30,000.' (The government continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East... We have over 30,000 Filipinos in Israel.) Apart from Israel, eight OFWs from Iran also recently returned home, and more are expected to follow. Administrator Caunan then detailed the assistance provided to returning OFWs such as medical support, financial aid, accommodation, and psychosocial counseling. She highlighted specific cases, such as a pregnant OFW and another diagnosed with cancer. 'Meron tayong sinalubong na buntis at sabi ni Sec. Herbosa, Department of Health ang sasagot ng lahat ng gagastusin niya sa kanyang panganganak. Meron din tayong kababayan na bumalik na may cancer... tutulungan sa libreng pagamot ng ating gobyerno.' (We welcomed a pregnant OFW, and Secretary Herbosa of the Department of Health promised full support for her childbirth. We also had a returnee with cancer who will receive free treatment from the government.) She also mentioned interest among returnees in starting anew, where some are exploring entrepreneurship, while others inquire about local and overseas job opportunities. 'Very interested kami sa upskilling and job matching. Mayroong 8 million online jobs available at may libreng training para ma-qualify dito.' (We're very interested in upskilling and job matching. There are 8 million online jobs available with free training to help them qualify.) She affirmed that a partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is underway to support this effort. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

OCTA survey on PH rejoining ICC shows public wants justice —Conti

A lawyer on Wednesday said she believes that the results of an OCTA survey, showing that the majority of Filipinos are in favor of rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC), indicates that the public is hungry for justice. 'Para po sa amin, ang tingin nga namin dito ay uhaw ang tao sa hustisya at tinitignan nila ang isang international court para magbigay ng hustisya na maaaring hindi nila natagpuan sa Pilipinas o kaya hindi nila maabot dito,' ICC assistant to counsel Kristina Conti said on Balitanghali. (For us, we believe that this shows that people are thirsty for justice, and they are looking to an international court to provide the justice that they may not have found or may not be able to attain here in the Philippines.) The Tugon ng Masa nationwide survey, conducted from April 20 to 24, showed that 57% of Filipinos want the country to rejoin the ICC while 37% are opposed to the move, and 6% remain undecided. A total of 1,200 male and female respondents aged 18 and above were interviewed face-to-face for the study. Conti said they support this move, especially since there is a pending case before the international tribunal. A general view of the International Criminal Court on the day former president Rodrigo Duterte arrives at Rotterdam The Hague Airport after his arrest at the request of the ICC, in The Hague, Netherlands, March 12, 2025. REUTERS/ Wolfgang Rattay Former President Rodrigo Duterte is currently under the custody of the ICC to face his crimes against humanity case over his controversial war on drugs. 'Kailangan lang pumirma ng Pilipinas dito sa treaty pero kailangan ito aprubahan ng two-thirds of the Senate, same as with the other treaties. Ito 'yung Senate concurrence. At saka, kumbaga sasabihin kumpleto na ayon sa aming batas ang pag-sang-ayon, both ng executive at ng legislative, sa pagpasok sa treaty na ito,' she said. (The Philippines only needs to sign the treaty, but it must also be approved by two-thirds of the Senate, same as with other treaties. This is called Senate concurrence. And then, it's like saying that under our laws, both the executive and legislative have fully agreed to enter into this treaty.) 'Simple kasi pipirma tapos ire-rehistro 'yung ganitong pagsali muli, pero komplikado dahil may kaunting politika ito,' she added. (It's simple because you just sign and register to participate again, but it becomes complicated because there's a bit of politics involved.) Asked if rejoining the ICC will affect Duterte's crimes against humanity case before the ICC, Conti said there may be effects. She said that should the Philippines rejoin the ICC, the government will be obligated to cooperate in investigations, cooperate with the serving of arrest warrants, and may affect matters of detention. Meanwhile, in a separate interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Conti said that the document containing the charges against the former president will be released on July 4, Friday. 'Ito ang paghahandaan niya para sa tugon niya sa September 23,' Conti said. (This is what he is preparing for in his response on September 23.) She explained that only Duterte's identity was confirmed during the initial hearing. The confirmation of charges against Duterte is set on September 23. —KG, GMA Integrated News
