A JAPANESE manufacturer is set to launch a hybrid version of one of their legendary models, offering a smoother, more comfortable ride with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Toyota have shared plans for its new electric Land Cruiser, which is set to compete with rival off-road motors.

According to Autocar, the SUV uses the same electrified diesel powertrain as the mild-hybrid Hilux, combining a 2.8 litre four-pot with an electric motor-generator and a 48V battery.
Toyota said: 'The benefits include a smoother, quieter and more responsive engine stop-start system and smooth, linear and powerful acceleration from start-off.'
The manufacturer continued by explaining that this set-up takes up less room than the full-hybrid arrangement seen in their other models, meaning neither the Land Cruiser's bodywork nor drivetrain needed significant modification.
They added: 'The system in no way compromises the Land Cruiser's ability to operate in extreme conditions and rough terrain.
'The all-new Land Cruiser combines the model's long-established strengths of quality, durability and reliability with new technologies.
"Built on a new Toyota Global Architecture body-on-frame platform, it has even greater strength to tackle challenging conditions while delivering composed, reassuring on-road behaviour."
It also emphasised that the high-mounted and waterproofed motor-generator means it can still wade through water up to 700mm deep, making the SUV ideal for off-roading.
The motor recuperates energy under deceleration to charge the 48V battery, which can then supplement the engine under acceleration and power the stop-start system.
According to Toyota, this results in smoother acceleration, improved efficiency and enhanced ability to tackle off-road obstacles.
While prices are yet to be confirmed, the first examples are reportedly due at the end of the year.
Toyota explained that all Land Cruiser models will use the new MHEV powertrain in the UK, including the freshly revealed Land Cruiser Commercial.

The new motor will initially use the non-electrified version of the diesel powertrain and is differentiated from the passenger car only by the absence of rear seats to make way for a 2000-litre load bay.
The Land Cruiser is set to rival the Land Rover Discovery Commercial, which is set to hit the market in August with a starting price of £52,729.17.
Toyota has also recently hinted that it is finally bringing the long anticipated GR Corolla to the UK.
The motor is reportedly expected to go into production next year at the manufacturer's Derbyshire plant, in a bid to satisfy lengthy wait lists.

Sadly, that means the Russian people, ultimately. "But our job is to make sure that that war economy is weakened and that we diminish his ability to wage war elsewhere. So we need to ensure that Russia doesn't have the money." Sir Fox believes this would be best achieved by reversing the policy stopping Russian oligarchs from investing in Europe. This, he said, will draw more money out of Russia. "I think we should also seize Russian assets in Europe," the former doctor added. "The Russian assets sitting in Europe are more than the combined money that Europe and America have given to Ukraine so far. "And I think that it's perfectly reasonable that Russia pays the price for its war making. And you can view it as reparations for Ukraine. 6 "So the principle is there. And I think in the long term we need to try to make sure that Russia is not able to afford to be able to wage war. "It's quite clear that Putin can't be accommodated. "There is no way to deal with an FSB thug who is a hardline ideologue who hates the West and wants to recreate the Soviet Union by all means including violence." It comes after a top Ukrainian government source warned Putin could hit Europe with a never-seen-before-attack. The insider said the tyrant could exploit the crisis in the Middle East while the West's eyes are turned to the embattled region. Cunning Vlad may even attempt to mimic Ukraine's elaborate Spiderweb operation that blitzed strategic targets inside Russia. The source told The Sun: "The West should be prepared that the Spiderweb operation may be reconfigured and deployed by Russia as a hybrid attack on any Nato Eastern flank nation. "That would be the major Article 5 test that the Alliance has not experienced yet."

From Hong Kong to Kirkcaldy: Meet Scotland's new Street Food Champions
Minor condiment crises aside, Cheung is in high spirits following a weekend which saw her and business partner/fiancé, Rick Tai, come out on top when competing against fellow street food chefs from across the country. 'I'm still feeling quite emotional about it all,' she continues. 'I had been so nervous ever since first sending our application, and when we found out we were finalists while working a pop-up on Leith Walk, I was just jumping up and down on the street for what felt like five whole minutes. 'When we got there for the competition weekend, there were so many amazing traders with all of this professional equipment – one of them had a fridge that looked like my closet at home. 'We tried so much food and the finalists were all fantastic, but I was nervous because we come from a different culture and don't have as much market experience. 'When they announced we had won, I cried straight away.' Read more: Though they are relative newcomers to the Scottish street food scene, this Perth-based couple previously achieved success in Hong Kong, where in 2016 they founded a permanent Smoked Tamago shop serving a signature dish of Tamagoyaki. These traditional Japanese-style egg rolls wowed judges at last weekend's awards and ultimately secured their win, but Cheung admits to having some initial doubts over whether their menu would catch on in a new country. 'We moved to Scotland around four years ago, which was a really difficult time because of Covid', she explains. 'We both had other jobs, but always knew that we wanted to start our food business again. "It was only late last year that we found the courage to say, 'ok, let's do it'. 'We had a takeaway in Kirkcaldy at the beginning, but then realised that we needed to be meeting people face to face so that we could properly explain our signature dish because it's not very common in Scotland. 'That's why we started doing markets and have stuck with it since.' It also allowed them to reinvent their menu of contemporary Japanese-Korean dishes weekly to include the likes of Tteobokki, Takoyaki, and Japchae. 'The markets in Scotland really did make everything possible for us, because back in Hong Kong, opening a shop was a huge investment 'The city is tiny, the rent is crazy, and the housing prices are terrible. 'But here, we realised that we could try things out in a new environment without having to give up our full-time jobs. 'After a while, we started to feel like people were really loving our food, and I decided that I should probably just go for it.' 'We owe a big thanks to Choola for being so supportive of us right from the start,' the street food chef says of their first encounter at The Pitt in Edinburgh. 'I had just put in my application for Street Food Awards, and they were able to share so much of their experience with us. 'From then on, any time I had a question, they were happy to answer it and even helped us to pack up all of our stuff after the competition last weekend when we were totally exhausted." With a busy summer schedule ahead, there's little time for Smoked Tamago to stop and celebrate their Street Food Award win before moving on to the next stage of the competition in London this September. There, alongside Scottish People's Choice Award winners, Fire Bowl, they will serve up Tamagoyaki once again in the hopes of advancing to the European final in Munich. 'It's difficult to start a new life or business somewhere new, and we're not the only ones trying. 'We just happen to be lucky enough that our hard work has been seen.'
