Trump strikes 'massive' trade deal with 15% reciprocal tariff on imports from Japan

US President Donald Trump announced that the US has finalised a new trade deal with Japan, calling it a "massive Deal," and said it might be "the largest Deal ever made." Trump made this announcement on Truth part of the agreement, the United States will now impose a 15% reciprocal tariff on goods imported from Japan. He also claimed that this deal would bring $550 billion in Japanese investments into the United "We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made," Trump posted. He added, "The US will receive 90% of the profits," though he did not explain how that percentage would be calculated or what it includes. As of now, no official document explaining the exact terms of the agreement has been released. Trump spoke about the deal again during an event at the White House with Republican lawmakers."I just signed the largest trade deal in history; I think maybe the largest deal in history with Japan," he said. "They had their top people here, and we worked on it long and hard. And it's a great deal for everybody."TRUMP SAYS JAPANESE ARE 'TOUGH'Earlier, both sides had called the trade negotiations difficult. Back in June, when reporters asked Trump if a deal with Japan was likely, he said, "They're tough. The Japanese are tough."But on Tuesday, Trump said things had improved and called it a "very exciting time for the United States of America." He also said, "We will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan."One of the main issues during the talks was rice. Trump had criticised Japan for not buying American rice, even though they had a shortage. "They won't take our RICE, and yet they have a massive rice shortage," he posted on Truth Social last US data shows that Japan bought $298 million worth of American rice in 2023 and $114 million between January and April this IMPORTS AT CENTRE OF TRADE DISPUTECars were another sticking point in the deal. Trump has been repeatedly saying that Japan doesn't import US-made cars. "We didn't give them one car in 10 years," he said earlier this month. However, CNN reported that Japan imported 16,707 American vehicles last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo. After the meeting, Bessent said, "A good deal is more important than a rushed deal, and a mutually beneficial trade agreement between the United States and Japan remains within the realm of possibility."advertisementJapan is one of the United States' biggest trading partners. It is the fifth-largest source of US imports. Japan sent $148 billion worth of goods to the US in 2024. These included cars, car parts, farm machinery, and construction this year, Trump had introduced a temporary 24% tariff on Japanese imports but paused it in April. Since then, a minimum 10% tariff has been in place. Trump had also warned Japan in early July that a 30% tariff could come into effect on August 1 if no agreement was reached.- EndsWith inputs from AgenciesTune InMust Watch

A Uniqlo store in Dublin may be "on the agenda"

POPULAR JAPANESE STORE Uniqlo has announced it will be opening eight new stores in Europe, and Irish shoppers are hoping the Dublin will be included. The store, which is known for selling high quality but affordable basics, already has stores in ten European countries, including England and Scotland, but has not yet revealed the location of the new stores. Shoppers have repeatedly expressed their desire for the shop to come to Dublin, something which a commercial real estate expert said is 'on the agenda'. Earnings from Uniqlo's parent company, Fast Retailing, make them world's third biggest clothing manufacturer and retailer after Zara owner Inditex and Sweden's H&M. Irish fans of the brand can currently only order clothes from Uniqlo online, but for delivery under €70, shipping costs €9.95. Advertisement The specialist, who works for a large commercial estate agent, told The Journal Uniqlo has 'looked' at opening a Irish branch of the store, but has not yet found a building large enough. Uniqlo shops stock men's, women's and children clothing, and are generally housed in a two story commercial building. 'I know they've looked, the difficulty is the size of building, I don't know if anything has been agreed on', the expert said. The brand has over 2,500 location, including flagship stores in London, Amsterdam and Milan. The commercial estate agent said that Ireland is on the agenda as a capital European city, but it is in a competitive environment with other cities across Europe, many of which have larger populations. They highlighted that trading out of listed buildings is difficult for retailers as the structural integrity of the building must be maintained. For this reason they said Uniqlo may not find a suitable space in the General Post Office, if plans to make the GPO a cultural, retail and office hub went ahead. 'Butter': the foodie feminist bestseller skewering sexism in Japan

JAPANESE writer Asako Yuzuki did not expect her novel "Butter" to capture a cult following abroad, hailed as a biting feminist critique of sexism and body-shaming. Translated into English last year, the tale of murder and misogyny has whetted an insatiable appetite, selling 610,000 copies overseas, including 400,000 in Britain – more than Japan – where it won multiple awards. Yuzuki was inspired by the real-life story of "Black Widow" Kanae Kijima, a woman sentenced to death in 2012 for poisoning three men she met on dating sites. The sensationalised media coverage at the time largely focused on Kijima's appearance, speculating how someone described as homely and unattractive could be considered a femme fatale. Many credited her romantic success to her homemaking prowess – notably in the kitchen. "When the case broke, the Japanese media mainly remembered that the suspect liked to cook and took classes ... to 'please men'," Yuzuki told AFP in an interview. "That deeply disturbed me." In "Butter", a journalist likewise disquieted by the portrayal of a Kijima-like character (renamed Kajii) writes to the jailed suspect, hoping to secure an exclusive interview by appealing to her gourmet tastes. Via a letter soliciting the beef stew recipe that Kajii reportedly fed her final victim, the pair begin an intimate and life-changing relationship. This proves a vehicle for Yuzuki to chew over the roots of misogyny in Japan, where traditional male and female roles still dominate and women are held to impossible beauty standards. In politics and boardrooms for example, women remain rare. Japan ranks 118 out of 146 in the World Economic Forum's 2025 Gender Gap Report. "Japan is a deeply patriarchal country. Very often, it is the father who occupies the central position within the family unit. This is the basis for laws even," Yuzuki said. Food – particularly butter, that artery-blocking symbol of pleasure and excess – forms the molten core of the story. Through sumptuous descriptions of butter-rich ramen and lavishly buttered rice, Yuzuki explores the tension between indulging appetites and the self-denial required to fulfil the societal pressure on women to stay thin. "There is an incredible amount of adverts for weight loss, cosmetic surgery and diets. This country is obsessed with fatphobia," Yuzuki said. It is also tough for women in Japan, where the #MeToo movement never really took off, to speak out about discrimination and sexual assault. Shiori Ito, a journalist who took the rare step of publicly accusing a prominent Japanese TV reporter of rape – a charge he denies – is a case in point. Ito's documentary "Black Box Diaries", which was nominated for an Oscar, was not released in Japan because it used material recorded clandestinely or intended for judicial use only. "In other countries, especially the United States, from the beginning of #MeToo, many well-known journalists have seriously investigated these cases, and it is because this information was made public officially that the victims were able to be protected," Yuzuki said. But in Japan, "women who have had the courage to speak out are reduced to the role of activists and consumed by the media within that framework," she said. Another example is Masahiro Nakai, a boyband member and a star TV presenter accused of sexual assault. He initially disputed the facts and then apologised. The scandal shone a spotlight on the toxic culture of young women being pressed into attending dinners and drinking parties with powerful figures. "What strikes me is this uninterrupted chain of sexual violence, and especially that these are crimes committed within one organisation, covered up by another organisation... that of the media," Yuzuki said. Yuzuki is convinced that change can only come from outside. "When foreigners take up a topic, especially the English-language media, it completely changes the way it is perceived in Japan," she said. "If the European media" continue to be interested in these issues, then "the situation could perhaps change a little."

July 10 South Africa (Kenilworth/Turffontein) form guide

Race 1 (1,200m) (8) ROCKANROLLIN was green but made a pleasing debut up the straight at Kenilworth on May 21. Watch for sharp improvement, he can certainly win a race like this. (11) BLACK EAGLE made massive improvement from his first run into his second run. He is clearly getting better and better with racing. (12) DAY IN DAY OUT ran a much better race behind Spirit on June 12. Step-up in trip to 1,200m suits. (3) MARCUS AURELIUS was unfancied on debut, but ran a terrific race. He should make the necessary improvement. Race 2 (1,200m) (3) JAPANESE GARDEN has been costly to follow but is worth another chance over this shorter distance. Watch the betting on well-bred debutant (5) KENSAL GREEN. (1) DONDOYAKI caught the eye when staying on for second at long odds over 1,000m. She would have come on since and should have more to offer over this extended trip. (9) TAKEMETOTHEMOON and South American import (7) SARAGOSSA CAT have claims on debut. Race 3 (1,200m) (4) WISH LIST ran third behind Paralegal on June 12. If she has improved back at home, she will be very difficult to beat. (1) PRECOCIOUS was beaten just over three lengths by Take It As Red at her first start over 1,400m. Much better than that run. Drop in trip suits. (10) QUEEN REGENT ran a much better race at Kenilworth on June 12, when third to Clair De Lune. If she can build on that run, she will have a good winning chance. (7) PLAYFUL JOULES has been rested for 65 days. On her best form, she could steal a place again with jockey Muzi Yeni up. Race 4 (1,200m) (6) UMZINGELI WENYATHI has placed in both starts over 1,000m. Will relish extra 200m. Among the newcomers, watch the betting on the well-bred (5) ROMILLY. (8) BLUSHING BLOOM could play a role if confirming that progress. Recently gelded (2) CAPTAIN FRANK had excuses on debut. Can give a better account. Race 5 (1,100m) (4) MEU CAPITANO has been rested for 114 days. His form of late over ground has been very good. The 1,100m trip is absolutely no concern at all. (5) KAIBOY ran second to Arctic Wizard at Kenilworth on June 12. He will certainly be right there at the finish on his best form. (2) GEM KING can mix it up with some of the best sprinters in the land on his day. Watch him closely at a decent price, he will run a cracker. (1) DEAN STREET won really well at a big price on June 21. Life will be tougher with a six-point penalty, but his chances must be respected. Race 6 (1,000m) Consistent (1) EMPRESS WU deserves a reward for her efforts and would not be winning out of turn after three consecutive seconds. Improving youngsters (5) MIDNIGHT MIRACLE and (8) WINTER BELLE have scope for further progress, and they will likely challenge for top honours. (6) RED HOT KISSES appeals most of the remainder. Race 7 (1,700m) (5) RED STATE has run some fair races of late in competitive open maidens. She should love the step-up in trip. Include her in all bets. (8) RARE EARTH ran a much better race behind Ocotillo on June 12. She now steps up in trip to 1,700m, watch for further improvement. (6) LUCKY THIRTEEN has been well tried in the maiden ranks. This is not the strongest race on paper. (7) NOT WANTED has taken a bit of time to mature. He is still learning to race but can be right there in the money. Race 8 (1,000m) (1) BUMPS LAST GRIND was runner-up in three of his four starts. Need not improve much to open his account. (2) INSPECTOR JAMES, (3) JET QUERARI and (4) RINGHO all have the form and experience to trouble the selection. Race 9 (1,400m) (9) FOLLOW YOUR HEART won well on May 21. He will love the step-up in trip. If he can beat the draw, he will be hard to beat. (7) FIRINGONALLENGINES won a gutsy race up the straight over 1,200m on June 12. He will keep fighting all the way to the line. (10) IN A TIMELY MANNER quickened up to win his debut like a very smart horse. He will love the step-up in trip to 1,400m. (11) MELA STRENGTH unfortunately draws poorly again, but on his best form and with some luck in running, he will be doing some good work late. Race 10 (1,600m) (8) SINGLETON SAM did not go unnoticed on debut against winners. He will have more to offer. (1) GREENLIGHT RACER ran third recently over slightly shorter distances. Will be competitive over this extended trip. (5) NKWENKWEZI is the only filly in the race but she would not be winning out of turn after consecutive close-up seconds. (2) PARABELLUM ran third last start over shorter. He will love the longer trip. Race 11 (1,400m) (1) GOLDEN ANGEL ran a fair race behind Strawberry Thief on May 21. She has dropped in the ratings, and in trip, and gets a good draw. (11) LA DIVINA won a super race on May 13. If she can beat the draw without doing work early, she will have a good winning chance again. (9) SUPREME FATE finished like a train behind Swiatek last time. She is still improving with racing and will be right there in the finish. (10) ONI SAN has run some decent races of late, especially her last run behind Swiatek on June 1. Can finish in the money. Race 12 (1,600m) (14) WITCHING HOUR ran fourth to an unbeaten filly aimed at a Grade 1 later this month. Her experience over this distance will stand her in good stead. (13) STAMPEDE AHEAD ran third on debut over 1,400m. Will relish the extra 200m. Debutant (12) SPECIAL STAR is attractively bred and any market support must be respected. Youngster (9) MERRYWEATHER is likely to improve for the step-up to this distance. Race 13 (1,100m) (4) LOVERS LANE ran a cracker behind Firingonallengines last time. This seems to be a nice race for him, if he can bring that last run to the track again. (10) GRAVITY has run two great races in succession, despite being slow into stride early. Good each-way chance in this race. (7) CHAMPAGNE MAC finished five lengths behind his stable companion on May 21. He tries hard at this level. (5) TAMBOURINE MAN has been rested for 83 days. If he does not need the run badly, he could easily win a race like this. Race 14 (1,200m) (4) NIGHT BOMBER is versatile and likely to acquit himself competitively once more. (5) PASSAGE OF POWER had legitimate excuses for disappointing recent performances. Can atone. (3) LEAD THE CHARGE is consistent and warrants respect. (2) YAMADORI is more than capable of bouncing back. Race 15 (1,000m) (6) PEACE OF MIND went down narrowly behind Pink Pigeon last time. She is very fast and really enjoys the 1,000m trip. Hard to beat. (3) THE CHARLESTON ran third in the same race won by Pink Pigeon on June 12. With the claim of 1.5kg, she must have a good winning chance. (7) INSIDE VOICE won her maiden well on May 25. She will still need to improve further to win again. She must be respected. (9) LHASA ran a lovely second behind Champagne Kisses last time. If she can reproduce that run, she can finish in the money.
