Shubman Gill Reveals United Captain Fernandes's Advice: 'There's Pressure At...'
Team India's crossover with Manchester United allowed skipper Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir to speak to their counterparts, Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Amorim. The duo shared insights into those chats in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their social media channels.
The Men in Blue met with the Red Devils on the sidelines of their tour of England, where they are playing five Tests under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Their upcoming Test is at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, which is about a kilometre away from United's home stadium, which has the same name.
'It's very exciting when you are able to meet top athletes in the world from another sport," Gill said in the video. 'To get to know their stories is very inspiring, how you're playing two different sports, but the mindset that you play with most of the time is very similar. He (Bruno) just told me that there is pressure at times but it's kind of similar when you step onto the field, you don't really think about all the things that people expect from you. It's more about you being able to enjoy your game and enjoy the sport that you love."
Fernandes is arguably United's best player currently, and among the most popular during a time when the storied club is undergoing one of its most difficult phases.
'I've been here in 2014 as well. This is a completely different experience because you end up chatting with the players, you end up charting with Ruben as well, which which was a nice interaction that what his ideology is towards theme sport and what my ideology is, the basic foundation of a team sport is very similar, where I feel that I think it's the player that adapts to what the team needs rather than the team that adapts to the individual and that is the culture which we want to play," said Gambhir.
Interestingly, both are under similar pressure at the moment. Amorim has taken over a United side in disarray and is trying to rebuild everything from scratch, especially the team culture. However, the team's performances — the first season under him saw a record-low finish of 15th in the Premier League — will need to improve for him to be able to save his job this year.
Similarly, India has won just four of 13 Tests under Gambhir and the rumblings of opting for 'split-coaching' have begun.

Shardul Thakur says getting limited overs affecting ‘rhythm', concedes how much he bowls is captain Shubman Gill's call
Fast-bowling All-rounder Shardul Thakur admitted that being sparingly used as a bowler in the ongoing fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy affects his rhythm but conceded that how much he bowls — and when — is a call only captain Shubman Gill can make. Thakur, who returned to the side for the Old Trafford Test scored a crucial 41 runs in India's first innings. However, he bowled only five of the 46 overs on Day 2. England ended the day at 225/2, trailing India by 133 runs. In the five overs he bowled, Thakur gave away 35 runs at 7 an over. When asked about his limited contribution with the ball after the end of the day's play, Thakur said the decision rests with captain Gill. 'Giving bowling is the captain's call. Not in my hands. The captain decides when to give them,' Thakur said. The Mumbai all-rounder insisted he could have bowled two more overs on Thursday. 'But that is the captain's call. It is difficult to find rhythm but I try and use my experience,' Thakur added. Thakur said that England scored 'a lot of runs in the first 10-12 overs' and 'after that, we were trying to pull it back'. 'And, you know, runs kept flowing. We know a lot of times when the sun is out here, the runs are being scored at a good rate. And when the conditions are overcast, the ball does a lot. And then it just becomes difficult to score,' he said. The decision to give him only five overs baffled former India offie R Ashwin. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said India could have included left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the playing 11 if Thakur was going to be used in a limited role. Ashwin said: 'If you are only planning to give Shardul Thakur this many overs, and expect 20-30 runs from him. I love Shardul Thakur, I like him a lot, but if this is the usage point, why can't you consider Kuldeep Yadav? It is just blowing my head away. I know it seems against the grain because it is three spinners, but it is not that way, Jadeja is a specialist batter for you now. Washington Sundar is also batting well. When your bowlers can bat so well, why are you not bringing an attacking bowler? Today, Jassi was bowling, and after that, it looked like India had no other options to take a wicket.'

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Record Broken, Ayush Mhatre Enters U-19 History Books
Last Updated: The 18-year-old smashed 126 off 80 balls with 13 fours and 6 sixes, reaching his century in 64 balls and breaking Vaibhav's record with a six on the 68th delivery India U-19 skipper Ayush Mhatre broke a world record in spectacular fashion during the second and final Test against England U-19 at Chelmsford, which ended in a draw. In a blazing second-innings knock, Ayush smashed a century at a strike rate of over 150, surpassing the previous record held by teammate Vaibhav Suryavanshi and setting a new global benchmark for the fastest-scoring hundred in youth Test cricket. The 18-year-old amassed 126 runs in just 80 balls, including 13 fours and 6 sixes. He reached his century in 64 balls and broke Vaibhav's record with a six on the 68th ball. Interestingly, the bowler he faced was Alex Green, who had previously dismissed Vaibhav in both innings. Ayush had already made a mark with his youth Test debut against Australia last year, scoring 104 runs off 62 balls in the second innings. Left-handed opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi had held the previous world record, having scored with a strike rate of 167.74, including 14 fours and 4 sixes. That record, for the highest individual score at a strike rate of 150 or more in an Under-19 Youth Test, now belongs to Ayush Mhatre. In the match, England declared their innings at 324 runs, to which India responded with 279 runs, with notable performances from Vihan Malhotra (120) and Ayush (80). England then set a target of 355 runs in the second innings, and India managed 290 for 6 wickets on the final day, leading to a draw. Barring Ayush, no other batter made a significant contribution in the second innings. Notably, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for a duck. Ayush was the standout performer in this Test series, scoring 340 runs across 4 innings, which included 2 centuries and a half-century. Vihan Malhotra contributed significantly with 277 runs in the middle order. In the bowling department, Aditya Rawat and R Ambarish each took 6 wickets. While Vaibhav Suryavanshi excelled in the ODI series, Ayush dominated the Test series. Despite the series ending in a draw, Ayush's record-breaking performance and consistent batting offer promising signs for the future of the Indian team. Jack Grealish On Verge Of Leaving Manchester City After Chat With Pep Guardiola
The struggling midfielder had a disappointing last season and could be left out of coach Pep Guardiola's plans for the upcoming Premier League campaign. England international Jack Grealish's Manchester City career could be over soon after a chat with head coach Pep Guardiola, who encouraged the struggling player to look elsewhere at the end of the last season. Battling recurring injury problems and being forced to warm the bench for most of the Premier League season, Grealish cut a sorry figure. Grealish's City stint has been in limbo ever since Guardiola left him out of his squad on the final day of the Premier League season at Fulham, later indicating that the attacking midfielder could leave the Etihad as he requires consistent game time. He was then also dropped from Guardiola's plans for the FIFA Club World Cup and is unlikely to remain with the club when the Premier League returns in August. Speculations over Grealish's City days being over had only spiked after City signed attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki in June, increasing competition for spots in their forward positions. With Guardiola eyeing an improved set of performances to rejuvenate the club's fortunes, a door could well be shown in the coming days to the experienced winger. Manchester City had already decided not to renew Kevin De Bruyne's contract. The Belgian is now with Serie A champions, Napoli, who have been empowering their squad with Premier League signings. They also signed Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour last season, with both players playing key roles in their title victory. According to a report by the Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli also contacted Grealish's camp ahead of a possible approach. While Grealish's high-end salary could pose a hurdle to the Napoli move, the club is reportedly open to a loan deal, provided City cover some of his wages. Another potential transfer target is Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa after his slow season on Merseyside. Citing a minor injury issue, Liverpool left Chiesa from their pre-season tour. But this is being treated as a sign of dipping stocks with coach Arne Slot, who may leave the player out from his plans for the coming season, prompting Chiesa's return to native Italy. Chiesa has expressed his desire to win his place in Italy's national team back ahead of the 2026 World Cup. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
