BJP leader P Venkata Satyanarayana takes oath as Rajya Sabha member
In an X post, the senior BJP leader P Venkata Satyanarayana shared the visuals from his oath ceremony. In the visuals, post his oath, the newly elected Rajya Sabha member can be seen sharing a heartfelt moment with VP Dhankar.
Sharing the post, Venkata Satyanarayana said, 'This moment marks an unforgettable milestone in my life and journey of Public Service.'
Earlier, the BJP leader Venkata Satyanarayana was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. He was NDA's candidate for the seat in the Upper House of Parliament.
Satyanarayana is an Advocate by profession. He is also the Andhra Pradesh-BJP's State Disciplinary Committee Chairman.
With Rajya Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu set to undergo polls, DMK has allocated one Rajya Sabha seat to Makkal Needhi Maiyam, its founder and actor Kamal Haasan has been named the candidate for the Upper House of the Parliament.
Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Murali Appas said, 'We have passed a resolution to elect Kamal Haasan as a Rajya Sabha member from Makkal Needhi Maiam party.' Besides, the ruling DMK combine has named its three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 19 this year. According to a release of the DMK, Salma, Advocate P Wilson, and SR Sivalingam are its candidates.
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has courted a political controversy with his alleged remarks claiming that 'Kannada has its roots in Tamil.' In a strongly worded post on X, BJP Karnataka State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa demanded an unconditional apology from Haasan.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, each candidate requires a minimum of 34 votes to clinch a Rajya Sabha seat. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, with 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress:17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPM: 2), is poised to win four seats comfortably. (ANI)

Kolkata man found dead, family says he ended life fearing NRC deportation
The family of a 63-year-old man who was found dead in his Kolkata residence Sunday alleged that he died by suicide since he was living in fear of being deported to Bangladesh under the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), police said. A suicide note purportedly written by the victim, Dilip Kumar Saha, an Indian citizen, was found from the spot, police said. Saha, who reportedly moved to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972, was found hanging in his room in the Anandapally West area of Regent Park. Police said Saha's wife Arati Saha, and another relative broke into the room after he did not respond to their repeated calls. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Arati claimed that her husband was under mental stress as he feared being sent to a detention camp and eventually deported to Bangladesh even as he possessed valid voter ID and other documents. Saha worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The matter is under investigation, police said. Meanwhile, local TMC MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas, who visited the family, said, 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you.' Later in the day, the TMC held a press meet, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for Saha's death. Ghosh accused the Centre of creating 'an atmosphere of terror' that is causing 'valid Indians' to fear for their lives, especially those who may struggle to produce their parents' documents. Education Minister Bratya Basu also condemned the incident, calling the BJP's 'insulting and harassing' notices to Hindu Bengalis regarding the NRC. 'The way in which the BJP has been sending NRC notices to Hindu Bengalis, is to insult and harass them. Not being able to tolerate this, Dilip Kumar Saha has ended his life. OPS-Nainar spat continues; TTV bats to bring him back
Chennai: The spat between state BJP president Nainar Nagenthran and former AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam continued on Sunday too, with the two denying each other's claims. While OPS showed messages he had sent to Nainar as proof of reaching out to him, the BJP leader said these were not enough. Even as the two leaders sparred, AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran urged the BJP's national and state leaders to bring OPS back to NDA. The day also saw OPS asking his supporters not to talk about alliances and warned of action if they violated. The fresh exchanges began with Nainar demanding proof for OPS's claim that he had attempted to reach out to the BJP leader seeking an appointment with PM Narendra Modi when he visited Tamil Nadu last month. Nainar said that though OPS levelled charges against him, he would not do so in return. Within hours, OPS showed reporters at Madurai airport the messages he had sent to Nainar from his mobile. Later in the day, when reporters met Nainar at Odanilai and asked him about the messages, the BJP leader said displaying such messages from his cellphone were not enough as proof of communication. Meanwhile, TTV Dhinakaran said BJP's Delhi leaders as well as those in TN should bring OPS back to the NDA. "OPS was with BJP even before I joined NDA. BJP leaders should take steps to bring him back," he said. He blamed unnamed leaders for forcing OPS's exit from NDA and expressed confidence OPS would not join DMK. Later in the day, OPS issued a statement, warning his supporters and cadres not to talk about alliances. Instead, he said they should campaign about problems faced by people because of DMK govt and hold public rallies to explain how AIADMK is crumbling. P Chidambaram CHENNAI: Former Union minister P Chidambaram on Sunday termed the reported move to add 6.5 lakh migrant workers from Bihar to the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu as "alarming and illegal," prompting Election Commission to dismiss his claims as "misleading and baseless. " Chidambaram called Election Commission's SIR exercise in Bihar "an insult to migrant workers and a gross interference in the rights of the electorate in Tamil Nadu," a day after DMK and its allies opposed the poll body's decision to register migrant workers in the states of their domicile. "If a migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and continues to live there, how can the worker be considered permanently migrated to Tamil Nadu? How can he or she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?" Chidambaram asked. Similarly, a person originally from Bihar but ordinarily residing in Chennai is entitled to be registered as an elector in Chennai," Election Commission explained on X.
