I'm a beauty writer who's swapped my go-to £28 mascara for one that's under £10 - and my lashes look better than ever
I am a Charlotte Tilbury make-up lover. Look in my bathroom and you'll find the Flawless Filter Foundation; the Contour, Blush and Highlighter Wands; about five Pillow Talk Lipsticks and glittery Beautifying Eye Shadow Palettes galore.
Until recently, you would have found the £28 Legendary Lashes Mascara too. It has been my go-to since the age of 18: smudge-proof; long-wear and super-volumising, with just one quick sweep lasting all day.
That was until a few months ago when, having run out of my trusty Legendary Lashes, I needed to pick up a new mascara on Kensington High Street. Sadly, my bank account was not in a position to splurge £28 on a mascara (payday was two days away, okay?) so I thought I'd pop into Boots for a cheap one to bridge the gap.
The mascara in question? NYX's £9.50 Worth the Hype Mascara. My plan was to use it for two days, then shove it into my bathroom cupboard as an emergency back-up. Except after using it for two months, I can safely say it is the best mascara I have ever used – and a quick scour of online reviews shows plenty of shoppers agree.
NYX Worth the Hype Mascara
My main issues with budget mascaras are: a) having to apply three layers to get any length and volume and b) near-immediate smudging, so I look like a panda by the time I get into work. I'm happy to say Worth the Hype Mascara delivers serious oomph with just one layer and honestly, does not budge. I'm not talking 'lasts a few hours', I'm talking 'lasts an entire day at Glastonbury / sweaty workout class/ tears at my friend's engagement party'.
Don't just take my word for it. NYX's product has hundreds of five-star reviews across online retailers calling it the 'best mascara out there', with one writing: 'It performs like high-end mascara for a fraction of the price… my lashes have never looked so good.' Hear, hear.

Gunman who tried to kidnap Princess Anne let loose and claims 'I'm innocent'
A gunman who tried to kidnap Princess Anne is out of a high-security mental hospital – and waging a campaign to clear his name. Ian Ball, then 26, ambushed Queen Elizabeth's daughter in the Mall and tried to abduct her in March 1974, shooting four men who came to her aid. The Princess Royal refused her assailant's demands to go with her and pay £2 million, telling him 'not bloody likely, and I haven't got £2 million'. Ball was quietly let out of Broadmoor in 2019 on probation and now spends his time flogging a disturbing self-published book trying to prove his innocence, the Daily Mail reports. The wanna-be kidnapper, now 77, told the newspaper: 'I'm an innocent, sane man because I had good reason to believe the gunpowder had been taken out of the bullets and another girl had been substituted for Princess Anne.' Discussing the then 23-year-old Anne, Ball said: 'She wasn't bothered on the night. 'I didn't scare her. I was more scared than she was.' When Ball appeared in court in May 1974, two months after the confrontation, he admitted attempted murder and attempted kidnap. The gunman had skidded his car in front of Princess Anne's car on the Mall, and threatened to shoot her. Ball used two guns to shoot her police bodyguard, her chauffeur, a police constable and a journalist who tried to intervene. A tug-of-war even broke out over the princess between Ball and her husband Captain Mark Phillips. It was not until former heavyweight boxer Ronnie 'The Geezer' Russel stepped in to help subdue him that Anne was freed. Anne later said she was 'furious at this man' for ripping her favourite blue velvet dress. But since his release Ball has been selling an 'autobiographical novel', To Kidnap A Princess, while trying to clear his name. The bizarre description of Ball's book on Amazon describes how it 'opens with the dramatic and thrilling attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne' before detailing the author's 'eventful and turbulent 45-year stay in Rampton and Broadmoor criminal lunatic asylums'. It adds: 'The book is an emotive read and it will make you laugh, make you cry, shock you even, but ultimately it will leave you in wonder at the indomitability of the human spirit.' Ball continues to parrot the excuse that the kidnapping was actually a hoax gone wrong, an explanation he first made six months after the incident. His line of events claims the kidnap attempt was staged with the help of a policeman 'friend' called 'Frank'. This Frank was supposedly meant to have removed the gunpowder from the bullets in Ball's guns and replaced another woman for Princess Anne. The former Broadmoor detainee said: 'The whole idea of performing the hoax was to get the publicity so I could write my autobiography, and I expected to get £10,000 in royalties. 'To prove my innocence I need to prove the existence of Frank. That will prove I had reason to believe it was all a hoax.' He also claims he was wrongfully jailed by the 'upper classes', adding that the late Queen was the 'ring-leader'. The Daily Mail report claims Ball uses social media to appeal against his convictions and has leaflets distributed in his local west London area, encouraging people to meet him. Thorough risk assessments are conducted on 'restricted patients' like Ball before they are let out. Doctors have the power to 'manage the risk to the public'. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said of Ball's release: 'Restricted patients can be recalled back to hospital if their mental health deteriorates to such a level that the risk they pose becomes unmanageable in the community.' More Trending Anne's bodyguard, former Metropolitan Police inspector Jim Beaton, was shot three times as he protected Anne and was later given the George Cross. Former heavyweight boxer Ronnie Russell punched Ball twice in the head to stop the kidnapping after spotting the commotion. Russell was awarded the George Medal by Queen Elizabeth II, who told him: 'The medal is from the Queen, but I want to thank you as Anne's mother.' Anne's father, Prince Philip, later joked of the attempted kidnapping: 'If the man had succeeded in abducting Anne, she would have given him a hell of a time in captivity.' An insider source has claimed former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau feels 'ambushed' by the public attention he is receiving after going out for dinner with Katy Perry Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau have sparked surprise dating rumours this week after being spotted enjoying an intimate dinner in Montreal, Canada. The pair, who are both recently single and navigating tumultuous chapters in their respective careers, were seen at the trendy Le Violon restaurant before heading out for cocktails at a nearby terrace bar. At the time sources claimed the pop star and former Canadian prime minister spent several hours together on Monday evening tucking into the chef's tasting menu and appeared "comfortable" and "at ease" with each other. One insider claimed Trudeau had his arm "practically welded" to Perry's waist, although no photographs have emerged to confirm this. Despite the romantic buzz, insiders say not everything is quite as it appears. According to celebrity publicist Rob Shuter, while Perry "really likes" Trudeau and viewed the dinner as a date, the former PM had a different perspective. Meanwhile, Orlando Bloom was recently seen singing and dancing at an Oasis gig in Manchester after his split with Perry, and appeared to have not a care in the world. The actor shared several videos of his time at the concert on Instagram, where he was spotted partying in the VIP section with Liam Gallagher 's sons, Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24. Before the show, the actor posted a video captioned: "Road to Oasis. Could not be more f'in excited." In another clip, he added: "It's gonna be karaoke all night," as he smiled at the camera.
