Meghan Markle's wedding speech left guests shocked with this one remark

Daily Record19-05-2025
It has been seven years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married.
Today marks seven years since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot at St George's Chapel. The couple's big day was a beautiful occasion and the world watched on as they became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
After the stunning ceremony the newlyweds and hundreds of their guests headed to their reception followed by an evening party which was hosted by Harry's now estranged father, King Charles, at Frogmore House.
Insiders say it really was quite the celebration with guests tucking into 'dirty burgers' and candyfloss and drinking themed cocktails. One cocktail was even named 'When Harry Met Meghan' - a nod to the iconic romcom movie When Harry Met Sally, writes The Mirror.
Meghan also made a speech at her big day, which apparently left many guests speechless. In her moving speech, she said she had "found her prince", praised the late Queen and thanked Charles for stepping in at the last minute to walk her down the aisle.
However, royal biographers Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim in their book that Meghan hinted at how she had not been able to use her voice during her time as part of the Royal Family in the speech. In the book Finding Freedom, they write: "A first for a royal bride, the move reinforced the idea that this American was no typical duchess.
"'You could literally hear a pin drop', said a close confidant, who described the speech as a momentous occasion even for the Americans. 'For her to have been quiet for as long as she had, and then have this really safe space where she could give these heartfelt remarks, it was a really special moment', the source said.
"'She spent so many years, whether on campus, on TV, or advocating for women to be empowered, speaking out. And she's respected that. She does have a lot of respect for the family and the institution that she has joined. But it's just a different way of living. We'd missed hearing her speak'. And apparently Meghan felt the same way, because she laughed, 'I know it's been a while'."
Years later, during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan spoke directly on the issue of not having a voice, saying she had been silenced and comparing herself to The Little Mermaid. She said she was shocked by the parallels between herself and the cartoon princess who also 'lost her voice' after marrying royalty.
She recalled a day when she sat down at the couple's former home, Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, to watch the movie on TV. "Now, who as an adult really watches The Little Mermaid?" she joked to Oprah. "But it came on and I was like, well, I'm just here all the time, so I may as well watch this.
"And I went 'Oh my God, she falls in love with a prince and because of that she has to lose her voice'. "But by the end, she gets her voice back," she added.
In her and Harry's explosive Netflix series released in 2022, Meghan revealed what exactly she said in her wedding day speech. In the last episode of the six-part series, Meghan reads the speech from her phone while sat beside Harry and says her first line "got a big laugh" from guests.
She then read out: "Onto the crux of why I wanted to speak tonight. First of all, it's been a while. Continuing to recall her speech, Meghan goes on: "But mostly I wanted to share a story. A story about the man that I love and the way that we met.
'Let's call this a modern fairytale. Once upon a time, there was a girl from LA. Some people called her 'an actress'. And there was a guy from London. Some people called him 'a prince'. All of those people didn't fully get it. Because this is the love story of a boy and a girl who were meant to be together.
"They meet on July 3rd, 2016 in London and they giggle endlessly. "They have their second date and he brings her cupcakes because it's 4 July.''A bittersweet celebration', he says. Ironic really. Her country's independence from his country. Yet in this moment they know they don't want to be independent from each other.
"And after a month of long-distance courtship, they settle into the quiet of Botswana. And amidst whatever momentary worries that creep in, they look at each other and think, whatever world we're in. They would love and garden and travel and laugh, and rack up more air miles than any couple could have.
"And when the tides were rough, they squeezed each other tighter. 'Nothing can break us,' they'd say. 'For this love, she was a fighter.' "I appreciate, respect and honour you, my treasure, for the family we will create. And our love story that will last forever. "So I ask you to raise a glass to the astounding assurance that now life begins. And the everlasting knowing that, above all, love wins.'

Inside England captain Leah Williamson's romance with Miss USA winner Elle Smith

England captain Leah Williamson will be leading the Lionesses to hopeful victory in the Women's Euro 2025 finals tonight. Leah's England will take on former rivals Spain in St Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland, two years after losing out on their World Cup attempt. All eyes will be on the England team, including 29-year-old team captain Leah, who was permanently appointed to the post by England manager Sarina Wiegman in 2022. But what do we know about Leah's life away from the pitch? Does she have a girlfriend or partner? When not leading her team to victory, Leah has made headlines for her rumoured romance with former Miss USA Elle Smith. Here's all we know about Leah Williamson's relationship with the 27-year-old beauty pageant winner. American journalist and beauty pageant contestant Elle Smith was crowned Miss USA in 2021. In the run-up to the competition, she was named Miss Kentucky USA that same year, making her only the second woman from Kentucky to win Miss USA. She went on to represent the United States at Miss Universe, ultimately finishing in the Top 10, losing out to India's Harnaaz Sandhu. Although they became romantically linked in 2024, Leah and Elle have not officially confirmed whether they are in a relationship. Speculation that the pair were 'soft-launching' a relationship began in March, when Elle posted a video of her and Leah floating in the ocean together on a paddleboard. This came accompanied by the caption 'happy birthday my love x,' to which Leah responded with a series of emojis. Since then, they have continued to pop up all over each other's social media, including a picture of them celebrating England's 6-0 win against Portugal, back in May. In the black-and-white picture, Leah sits on Elle's lap, with the former Miss USA titleholder's arms around her. In response to the picture, Leah commented: 'We did it🥹🥹🥹' Last month, Elle shared a series of snapshots from their holiday to Majorca together – many of which saw the pair looking very loved-up indeed. These images included a snap of Elle and Leah on a paddleboard together, as well as shots of them all dressed up and headed out for dinner. Leah shared her own carousel of images on her Instagram page, too, which included a number of grabs of Elle smiling and contented. Leah also showed her appreciation when Elle shared a series of snaps posing in her Skims bikini while on holiday in Jamaica for her birthday last month. 'I have no words,' Leah wrote in the comments to the post – to which Elle responded: 'all yours.' More Trending She then commented again soon afterwards, writing: 'Just come for a second viewing.' Elle has shared a message of support ahead of tonight's final, posting a snap of herself in a t-shirt to her Instagram Stories. This wasn't any old England t-shirt either. The message emblazoned on the white tee's front in red writing? 'Live, Laugh, Leah.' Got a story? Tina O'Brien 'head over heels' for new man as she shows him off at Jack P Shepherd's wedding

The Corrie favourite was spotted looking very loved up at the wedding of her on-screen brother. Jack P Shepherd's wedding yesterday was a day for love and romance - but not just for the groom. His on-screen sister Tina O'Brien looked loved up as she showed off her new man at the event. ‌ Tina, who plays Sarah-Louise Platt in Coronation Street, was one of the guests at the lavish do at Manchester Cathedral yesterday. And she packed on the PDA with her new beau when leaving the afterparty. ‌ As seen in our sister title The Mirror, Tina and Adam Fadle, 38, shared a big snog on the street outside after deciding to call it a night. And an insider has claimed the actress, 41, is "head over heels" for Adam. ‌ There were plenty of cobbles favourites in attendance as Jack, who plays David Platt, tied the knot with Hanni Treweek in a romantic ceremony. As well as Tina, Lucy Fallon, Colson Smith, and Ben Price were there to celebrate the happy couple. And the groom's on-screen mum Helen Worth beamed as she walked towards the venue with her husband. The wedding came just over a year after Jack proposed to Hanni during a romantic safari trip in Tanzania. The couple had been colleagues on the popular soap before their relationship blossomed. ‌ And Tina certainly enjoyed her day celebrating her soap star pal. Wearing a blue and white floral dress, which she paired with a white handbag, she looked stunning. New man Adam looked very dapper in a white button-up shirt and a navy blue suit. The pair were "all over each other" throughout the celebrations, according to an insider, and after they left the lavish do hand-in-hand, they stopped in the street to share a big smooch. ‌ The source told The Mirror: "There was no mistaking they were an item on the day. Tina looked very much smitten with Adam. "She looked radiant and everyone that saw them could see how besotted with each other they were. They were all over each other." ‌ Speaking about their growing relationship, the insider added: "Tina dotes on him - she loves that he's very calm and is a real gentleman, in every way. She's head over heels. This is no flash in the pan relationship, they're getting serious." Tina was previously married to another Adam, personal trainer Adam Crofts. But the couple, who share a son, split after six years of marriage. According to insiders, Tina had simply fallen "out of love" with her husband and "fallen in love" with new Adam, a design guru who has worked for Paul Pogba. ‌ Adam refurbished the former Manchester United star's home in Cheshire shortly after he made the move to the Red Devils. The home appears in the designer's portfolio on the Panoramic Properties website. Jack first met Hanni when his now-bride appeared on Corrie, later going on to work as a storyline writer for the soap. ‌ However, sparks didn't fly until they met at a friend's wedding sometime later. Jack said: "We got chatting, I made Hanni laugh, we had a couple of drinks and we flirted. That was it." Later that year, a chance meeting at a supermarket sparked their courtship. Despite Jack describing it as awkward, the meeting led to a long-lasting relationship. Hanni was worried about her looks at the time but Jack was totally taken with her. He said: "I actually thought she looked fit. I just saw the girl I fancy wearing lycra! We quickly went on our first date and we just clicked." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Prince William takes Princess Charlotte, 10, on sweet father-daughter outing to cheer the Lionesses at the Women's Euro final

Prince William has been pictured taking his daughter Charlotte, 10, on a sweet father-daughter outing to cheer on the Lionesses at the Women's Euro final. The Royal's appearance was widely-anticipated at the stadium in Switzerland tonight with sources confirming he would be there to support the team. In a social media post, he had said: 'Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. 'The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on!' Charlotte was snapped this afternoon standing close to her father in a sweet blue polka dot dress. The Royal Family also kicked off well-wishes this morning with a post that read 'Let's go girls!!' as fans all over the nation decked out windows with England flags. It comes as the boyfriend of England star Ella Toone backed the Lionesses today ahead of their big game tonight where the squad will seek 'redemption' in the Women's Euro Final. Joe Bunney uploaded a post to social media today which he captioned 'Big day ahead. Redemption time. Come on girls' in reference to the team's nailbiting loss to Spain in the 2023 World Cup Final. England's women now have the opportunity to seek their revenge as they play the country tonight. Supporters watching the match in Basel, Switzerland were also pictured kitted out head-to-toe in red and white. In a post uploaded to X this morning the Royal Family shared a clip of guardsmen performing the iconic England anthem 'It's coming home' outside Buckingham Palace. The accompanying caption read: 'Let's go girls!! Wishing the very best of luck to the Lionesses in the Women's Euro Final this evening.' Downing Street also shared in the football fever as it decked outs its railing with bunting and displayed the flag of St George in its windows. Number 10 said: 'Good luck today, Lionesses. Let's bring it home.' Speaking to MailOnline at Wembley, where fans have gathered to show their support ahead of watching a livestream of the match, supporters told of their 'excitement' insisting 'we're going to win'. Sophie McCusker, who was joined by her three friends outside the stadium said: 'We've come from Liphook, which is a small village, and are huge football fans. This is the biggest game of the ear. We're so excited. Number 10 Downing Street also got in the spirit as it sported the flag of St George on its windows and bunting on the railing England fans hold up a 'Proper England' banner as they participate in the fan walk to the stadium prior to the game The fanzone is already starting to fill up and photos show jubilant supporters dancing and enjoying a cool drink in the run-up to the game 'Women couldn't play football for what 50 years, I think we'll catch up with the men in 10. 'In the last few years the standard has just gone up and up. It's definitely beginning to be taken more seriously, we saw some dads on the way in here. 'Our dads are the reason we started playing, it would be so special if they were here.' Sophie's friend Genevieve Turner predicted the score as 2-1 extra time to England and 'maybe even penalties'. She said: 'I can't wait. We're going to win.' In contrast, Katie Fuller and Charlotte Brown, both 25, said they hadn't any predictions for the score and 'don't want to put any energy into it' and they 'didn't want it to go wrong'. Charlotte said: 'We were just out in Switzerland to watch the Norway game - it was wild. There were loads of English fans there. Some men as well, so it is happening. Men are coming. The atmosphere is gonna be insane. 'The atmosphere is going to be electric in there, we've been to the games at Wembley before so this is definitely the place to be.' Father and daughter John, 60, and Emma, 25, were also out enjoying the pre-match buzz. Emma said: 'We're local so we come to BoxPark all the time, the atmosphere in there is electric.' Her father, John, added: 'It's very different from the men's, much more friendly. It's better, more enjoyable. No drinks being thrown about or drugs, people are just there for a good time. It should be taken more seriously, hopefully if we win tonight it will all change.' The pair said they predicted a 2-1 win to England hoping the team score early and 'Spain won't be hogging the ball like in the man's games'. Phoebe, 16, was joined by her mother Carly, 46, outside Wembley. Predicting 2-0 to England, the pair said they were 'so nervous'. Carly added: 'I can't wait to see what the atmosphere will be like, we just got here so it will be interesting to see if it's different from the men's. We're just here to support women.' Some fans have also spoken of their disappointment as they say they were refused entry to BoxPark. The furious supporters had travelled from Cambridge having booked tickets six weeks ago when the event was free - but following England's progression to the final the event has now sold out and the group have been denied entry. Describing it as a 'complete scam', Jessica said: 'I'm just devastated, we've travelled all this way & we're such huge fans. There's people getting in there without England tops on & we're clearly dressed for the occasion.' Jasmine added: 'I play football so tonight means a lot to me, if we don't get in I'll be gutted. We will pay, we've got no issue with that, but they've point blank refused us entry.' Despite scenes elsewhere of jubilant supporters, Laura painted a different picture, saying: 'We've got here and there's no real atmosphere, no real support. If this were the men's the streets would be packed out. 'We're waiting to speak to the manager now - if we can't get in, we'll be gutted. Where are we supposed to go?' Meanwhile the fanzone in Basel, Switzerland has filled up fast and photos show jubilant supporters dancing and enjoying a cool drink in the run-up to the game. Some supporters have also got in the spirit with cardboard cut-outs of the players and large flags that read 'Lionesses Roar to the Final'. Other fans to share their good luck messages this morning included The Spice Girls. The Chase star and 'Dark Destroyer' Shaun Wallace said: 'Let's hope the Lionesses get the gift of a great performance and bringing it home tonight! Make the most of everyday, every day is a gift. 'Have a fantastic Sunday and good luck to the Lionesses tonight.' This evening's match will begin at 5pm as England bids for its second title in a row following the team's victory against Spain in the previous tournament. England's captain Leah Williamson said the team are 'aware' and 'connected' to what it would mean if the nation won today. She added: 'I think we don't necessarily carry the weight of it [the expectations] and how much it means to people, but we are aware of it because it means the same to us. 'We recognise the opportunity and will do everything we can to take it.' The Lionesses faced a tough group in the initial stages but sailed through to the knockout rounds. A dramatic penalty shootout saw them emerge victorious in the quarter-final against Sweden. Some fans are also getting the fanfare going with cardboard cut-outs of the players and large flags that read 'Lionesses Roar to the Final' And then they beat Italy 2-1 in extra time in the semi-final - marking another stunning comeback. England and Spain remain the two best sides in Europe - though the Lionesses are expected to be in for a tough fight if they wish to emerge victorious, as Spain won their most recent match 2-1 on June 3. They will also be looking for redemption against Spain, who edged them 1-0 in the 2023 Women's World Cup final. Messages of support have also poured in from the likes of the cast of EastEnders, with Heather Pearce - who plays the character Eve Panesar-Unwin in the British sitcom - saying: 'You've already done us proud and you've inspired a nation - particularly my three little girls.' She added on behalf of the cast: 'We wish you all the luck on Sunday night.' Prince William is expected to be at the stadium in Switzerland tonight at the St Jakob-Park stadium cheering the Lionesses on. In a social media post, he said: 'Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. 'The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on!' Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: 'Into the final and inspiring the nation. Let's bring it home.' Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson added the team had 'absolutely smashed it', saying 'everybody is so proud of you'. One England fan joked to Sky News he 'had hair' before England's nerve-racking run to the final. He added: 'I'm a bit nervous but fingers crossed - we're going to win.' Today's match kicks off at 5pm UK time in Basel, Switzerland, and will be broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV1.
