Arrested in Gujarat MGNREGA ‘scam', who are Congress vice-president Hirabhai Jotva, son Digvijay
A native of Supasi village of Gir Somanth district, 58-year-old Jotva is seen as one of the most popular faces of the Congress in Saurashtra. A farmer by profession, with a degree in Arts from Saurashtra University, Jotva also owns various businesses like transport, animal husbandry, petrol pump and has also dabbled in construction.
Claiming that Jotva's opinion on candidate selection 'was always sought by the party's state and central leadership', Junagadh district Congress chief and Jotva's close aide Bharatbhai Hirpara said, 'We have been friends since our childhood days. Jotva's father Arjanbhai was also a Congress worker. Jotva began his political career as a sarpanch and went on to win the taluka panchayat and district panchayat elections. He has also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Junagadh district panchayat.'
Jotva also unsuccessfully contested the Keshod Assembly seat in the 2022 polls and the Junagadh Lok Sabha seat last year. Digvijay, on the other hand, won the sarpanch polls from Supasi village in Gir Somnath, a post once held by Jotva, just last week.
Sources close to the Jotva family said that both Digvijay and his elder brother Abhay completed their studies in London. Dijvijay returned to India only a couple of years ago and joined the family business of public development works.
Abhay is also a Congress leader and is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Gir Somnath district panchayat. 'After I completed my studies, I told my father that I wanted to return and join politics. He told me it was very difficult and warned me of legal challenges and said I might even have to go to jail. I told him I was prepared for everything… I am sure my father and brother will come out clean,' said Abhay, adding that party workers have approached him, offering their help.
Jotva and Digvijay duo are alleged to be sleeping partners in Jalaram Enterprise and Murlidhar Enterprise, the firms that bagged contracts under the MGNREGA scheme to undertake works in Bharuch, and are accused of direct involvement in the irregularities that are currently being probed.
According to the FIR, between 2021 and 2025, both enterprises secured contracts for road construction and other works across 56 villages of three talukas – Jambusar, Amod and Hansot. The police allege that most of these works were not complete, while poor quality material was used in others. The police said that around 250 people were questioned and 500 bank accounts were checked before arresting the duo.
State Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said Jothva was a very respectable leader. 'He was facing considerable pressure from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP during the recent Visavadar bypoll. BJP MP Mansukh Vasava has alleged the involvement of government officials as well as political leaders in it. The BJP top brass in Bharuch is involved in the scam. After the arrest of Khabad's sons, the police have changed the direction of the probe by targeting Congress leaders. The true nature of the scam will be revealed only if there is a free and fair investigation. We have demanded the setting up of an SIT,' he said.

Vijayendra dismisses K'taka Minister Priyank Kharge's remark to ban RSS as 'foolish'
Bengaluru: Commenting on the repeated statements by Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge about banning the RSS if the Congress comes to power at the Centre, state BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra dismissed the remarks as foolish. He was speaking to the media at the BJP state office, Jagannath Bhavan, in Bengaluru on Friday. When asked about Priyank Kharge's statement that the RSS would be banned if Congress came to power at the Centre, Vijayendra responded: "We won't respond to such foolish remarks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become Prime Minister for the third time, and his popularity is increasing. The country is progressing rapidly.' If someone makes irresponsible speeches, India would not have become the fourth-largest economy in the world, he stated. "The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has worked for development and led the country over the past 11 years has earned him this position. If Priyank Kharge dreams at night of Congress coming to power at the Centre, we have no objection," the BJP leader said. Criticising the IAS Officers' Association for meeting the CM demanding action against BJP MLC N. Ravikumar, Vijayendra questioned, "When the Chief Minister behaved in a way that insulted IAS officers, where was the IAS Officers' Association? Why didn't they file a complaint against the Chief Minister at that time?' He further said, 'I have taken note of the media reports regarding MLC Ravikumar's statement. He has also issued a clarification in this regard. Later, it was reported that the IAS Officers' Association met the Chief Minister and submitted a complaint." "Some Congress leaders also met the Chief Secretary yesterday and filed a complaint. An FIR has reportedly been registered,' Vijayendra said in response to a question. 'Keep MLC Ravikumar's issue aside for a moment. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself attempted to slap a senior police officer in a public rally in Belagavi. Where was the IAS Officers' Association then? The same Chief Minister, at another official event, insulted a Deputy Commissioner by saying, 'Hey, stand up!' Where was the IAS Officers' Association then?' he questioned further. 'Let this too be debated. The public is observing everything,' he added. "Many are praying and trying hard to become Chief Minister. They're planning to call Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala to conduct ground-breaking ceremonies and foundation stone events. Let's wait and see what unfolds in the coming days," he said, responding to another question on Congress infighting. "It doesn't matter to us who becomes CM if Siddaramaiah resigns. What's important is that the people of Karnataka are fed up with this Congress government. This government has no concern for the farmers who are in distress," Vijayendra criticised. "This Congress government is unable to provide houses to the poor or implement the Ganga Kalyana scheme. What does it matter who is CM? Nothing is developing. For the first time in the state's history, after the Congress came to power, the government is unable to pay salaries to its employees," he slammed. Even in the Police Department, salaries cannot be disbursed on time. In the Irrigation Department, salaries have not been paid properly for the last 2–3 months. The same situation prevails across all departments," Vijayendra stated. "People are now wondering if such a bankrupt government can even survive," he added. "Regardless of who is CM, the situation will not improve," he remarked. "Not just BJP leaders, but even the general public is talking about a change of government in the state. Even ruling party MLAs are speaking out. In response to Ramanagara MLA Iqbal Hussain's statement, I ask – what is the Chief Minister's reply to that?" he questioned. MLA Iqbal Hussain, even after being served notice by the party not to issue statements on leadership, stated that Dy CM D. K. Shivakumar should become the CM. "Union Minister and our senior leader Pralhad Joshi is working on resolving some internal issues in certain districts of our party. I personally requested him to look into these minor matters. Accordingly, he is taking time to understand and resolve the issues," Vijayendra concluded.

Trump's Big Beautiful Bill: How it impacts child tax credit and student loans
President Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' passed in the US Congress on Thursday as the House GOP managed to edge past the Democrats with 218 voting in favor to 214 against, including two GOP Congressmen who went against the party line. The bill, which is expected to significantly affect everyday Americans, has been sent to Trump to be signed into law before his self-imposed deadline of July 4. President Donald Trump walks to board his motorcade vehicle at the North Portico of the White House, Thursday, July 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)(AP) Trump's tax and spending bill lays out certain cuts and breaks in federal assistance to Americans, while increasing security spending and introducing massive tax breaks. Two of the key areas that will see change under Trump's new bill are child tax credits and student loans. Here's how these two areas are set to be affected: Child Tax Credit President Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' increases the child tax credit for Americans from $2000 per child to $2200. The move, supposedly aligning with the "pro-life" stance of the Trump administration, has faced criticism from experts who have argued that the $200 increase is still too low as the amount was never revised to adjust for inflation since it was introduced in 2018. Notably, the child tax credit was increased to $3000 per child ( and an additional $600 for younger children) during the pandemic. But that move was temporary, and the child tax credit was reverted to $2,000 once the pandemic normalized. Also read: What's in Trump's 'Big Beautiful' bill that cleared Congress today Student Loans The Big Beautiful Bill makes a number of changes in the provisions for federal assistance to borrowing for education. First up, the bill has reduced the number of repayment plans that borrowers can opt for to just two: the Repayment Assistance Plan and the standard repayment plan. However, the bill says that those who have already chosen a repayment plan under the previous option will be able to keep it, except for those under the SAVE plan. SAVE plan borrowers will have to opt for one of the new plans under the Big Beautiful Bill. Note: The changes will affect borrowers taking loans on July 1, 2026, or after.

Rahul Gandhi's photo on sanitary pads in Bihar: JD-U slams Congress for 'ideological bankruptcy'
New Delhi: Congress party's unique women-centric initiative and public outreach via sanitary pads has sparked controversy in the poll-bound Bihar, with political parties reacting sharply to what they called 'weird' attempt to woo voters. The ruling Janata Dal (United) launched a tirade at the grand old party for politicizing issues sensitive to women and called it an example of its ideological bankruptcy. The criticism was triggered by a photograph of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi featuring prominently on sanitary pad packets, being distributed under the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness among women in Bihar. The Congress launched the initiative as part of a larger campaign for women voters in the state. The party claimed that over 5 lakh sanitary pad boxes will be distributed, with an aim to address menstrual health, break social taboos, and also spread awareness across rural and urban areas alike. However, JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar strongly criticised the Congress over the move. "What has happened to the Congress Party?" he asked, calling the strategy a shallow electoral gimmick. 'Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been working continuously to empower the daughters and sisters of state, to empower them and to build a robust landscape for their overall development. The election year has come; daughters, women are a symbol of respect and honour, but you, in an arrogant display of power, put your face on it (sanitary pads),' he said, slamming the use of Rahul Gandhi's image on the sanitary pads. Neeraj Kumar further said the Congress's alliance with a party like the RJD has led to such political missteps. 'It shows, in politics, what is called ideological bankruptcy or lack of intellect. Not understanding the situation, or, naturally, the outcomes of being with a party like RJD, which is known for its political misdeeds, the effect of that co-operation was seen.' The sanitary pad distribution is part of the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, under which the Congress claims to be advocating for menstrual hygiene and awareness. In addition, the party has unveiled the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, a flagship welfare scheme for the economic empowerment for women. Under the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, the Congress promises to provide Rs 2,500 per month directly into the bank accounts of economically disadvantaged women, if the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) forms the government in Bihar.
