Smart city works in Nashik to continue
: Although the
smart city mission
ended on March 31 this year, the Nashik Municipal Smart City Development c Ltd (NMSCDCL) will undertake works within or outside the city limits.
The directorial board (DB) of the NMSCDCL on Friday gave its approval to the smart city corporation's proposal to amend norms to undertake works outside the smart city mission, either within or outside Nashik city. Accordingly, the smart city corporation will be able to get work from other govt organisations.
NMSCDCL has already been given work of installing CCTV, in view of the upcoming
Simhastha Kumbh Mela
. Under this project, over 3,500 CCTV cameras will be installed in the city.
"As the smart city mission is over, there were guidelines from the entral govt to the corporation to become self-sustainable by using its expertise and providing consultancy services. With this amendment, we will be able to undertake any work outside Nashik city. We will even be able to participate in the tender process of the Kumbh Mela or other work projects, said Sumant More, CEO of NMSCDCL.
"We have already received the CCTV camera installation project for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. We are conducting the survey to identify the locations for the installation of the cameras to help the authorities manage crowds and monitor surveillance," he said.
Divisional commissioner of Nashik Praveen Gedam chaired the meeting. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri, the district collector Jalaj Sharma and other directors attended the board meeting of the smart city corporation.

NMC to spend Rs2,100cr on resurfacing 61 major roads
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake a Rs2,100 crore initiative to resurface as many as 61 major roads throughout the city. This large-scale infrastructure project is for the upcoming Kumbh Mela , which the city is set to host between 2026 and 2028. The road development will happen in three phases. The first phase will cover 23 major roads, including sections of Nashik's existing inner, middle, and outer ring roads. They are vital as they connect to national and state highways, particularly in the Panchavati, Nashik Road, and Nashik East divisions. The civic body also plans to widen some of these roads where possible. The second phase will see development of 29 roads, including the significant Shahi Marg. And the third phase will involve re-laying of nine roads. This extensive upgrade of the road network aims to significantly improve connectivity and infrastructure, preparing the city for the large number of devotees expected for the Kumbh Mela. Nashik is one of four cities that hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The last Mela was held in 2015. "We will require around Rs373 crore for developing the road network by March 2026. The remaining amount will be required in phases during the next financial year," the official said. "The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000-crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela and submitted it to state govt for approval. Of the total amount, the public works department has proposed Rs4,000 crore for road works, construction of nine bridges, and other works," the official added. During the recent meetings, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the NMC and other authorities concerned to undertake those works which will need around two years for completion. Accordingly, the NMC completed the tender process and finalised a private agency for the construction of sewage treatment plants, sewage pumping stations and diversion of sewage from the 22 nullahs towards nearby STPs. The total cost of these sewage management works is around Rs1,475 crore. The civic body also started the tender process for the construction of the five bridges and strengthening of the Gadge Maharaj bridge. Apart from the STPs and bridges, the NMC has also prioritised road works.

Pankaja Munde vows to make Godavari river pollution-free
Nashik: State environment minister on Friday pledged that she would focus on cleaning up the Godavari river and ensuring its pollution-free status, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The minister said she would be in Nashik on Saturday too, where she would visit the Godavari river and hold meetings with industrial organisations in connection with the construction of the proposed common effluent treatment plant (CETP) in the industrial areas of Nashik city. "State govt is planning the rejuvenation of rivers in the state, and a long-term plan is also being prepared by the state environment department," she said. Munde said only 48% of the sewage water was being treated. "Hence, we are working long-term for the rejuvenation of the rivers in Maharashtra," she said, adding that there was a need to make long-term plans to overcome air, water and sound pollution. She said the environment department was preparing the SOPs for the construction sector. The minister also released the white papers regarding the measures needed to improve the air quality of the city and the measures to improve the solid waste management system by the civic body. The white papers were prepared by Credai Nashik.

Nashik civic body collects 41% property tax in four months
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has made a huge headway in its property tax collection for the financial year, amassing Rs111 crore between April and July. This figure represents 41% of its Rs275 crore target for the 2025-26 fiscal. An NMC official said the impressive start is due to the introduction of a strategic rebate programme. This initiative offered concessions ranging from 3% to 8% to prompt taxpayers. An 8% rebate was given to those who paid their entire annual property tax bill in one go in April and May. The rebate decreased to 6% for full payments made in June and further to 3% for those settling their dues in July. Adding another layer of incentive, the NMC also provided an additional 1% concession for taxpayers who opted to pay their complete property tax online during these concessional periods. "This encouraged digital transactions while rewarding timely payments," a civic official said. It should be noted that during the same April to June period last financial year, the civic body had collected Rs 114 crore. "Last year, we had sent messages to taxpayers to avail the benefits of the tax rebates. Employees of the property tax department also visited the houses of taxpayers, informing them about the concession scheme. However, this year, the NMC did not send messages to the taxpayers as three private agencies have been appointed for the six divisions to distribute the property tax bills," the official said. During the last financial year (2024-25), the NMC had managed to collect Rs 256 crore in property tax, even though the property tax collection target was Rs 250 crore. — Tushar Pawar
