Come to UP, Bihar...: BJP leader dares Thackerays after assault on north Indians

India Today12 hours ago
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday launched a blazing attack on Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and his cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray for recent violent attacks on Hindi-speaking people in Maharashtra, and dared him to visit UP, Bihar or Tamil Nadu and try and do the same there."Come to UP, Bihar or Tamil Nadu. Tumhe Patak-Patak ke maarenge (people will thrash you black and blue)," Dubey said, referring to the Thackeray brothers' tirade against north Indian people working in Maharashtra.advertisement"I dare them to go to Mahim dargah and try and assault any Urdu-speaking person, like they did to a Hindi-speaking vendor recently," Dubey told news agency ANI as he continued his attack on Raj and Uddhav.
In recent weeks, a few videos emerged and went viral on social media, showing MNS workers assaulting North Indian labourers and vendors when they expressed their inability to converse in Marathi, Maharashtra's native language. The assault incidents against North Indians come after the Devendra Fadnavis government rolled back the three-language policy in the state a week ago, following stiff resistance from Raj and Uddhav Thackeray, who called it "Hindi imposition".Citing top business conglomerates like Reliance Industries and the Tata Group, the BJP Godda MP said that Maharashtra runs on the money generated from Hindi-speaking states like Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, saying they set up huge industries there and pay taxes to Maharashtra."You have no industries in your state. You do not generate much tax. States like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have mines. Gujarat too has a few industries. What do you have?," Dubey added, calling the attacks "cheap acts".Dubey's salvo came after Raj Thackeray told his party workers to "hit people below their eardrums if someone creates unnecessary drama", but not to film it."If you beat someone, don't make a video of the incident. Let the person beaten tell that he has been beaten up; you don't need to tell everyone," he said.Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader Yogesh Kadam took exception to Nishikant Dubey's statement, saying, "Such arrogance will not work. We will not tolerate such statements. He is a Parliamentarian. He has won four terms, but it does not befit him to give such statements".ATTACK ON HINDI-SPEAKING VENDORLast week, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road area was assaulted by MNS workers after he allegedly refused to speak in Marathi - an incident that was caught on camera and has since gone viral. After the shopkeeper expressed his inability to converse in Marathi, two MNS workers were seen slapping him as he struggled to respond. Another man could be heard hurling abuse and warning him he wouldn't be allowed to run a business in the area.advertisementThe incident sparked a major political slugfest in the state and across the country, with several leaders condemning the act, and demanding action. However, the MNS defended the action, saying, "If anyone insults the Marathi language, MNS will respond in this manner".THE RAJ-UDDHAV THACKERAY TANGOOn Saturday, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray shared the stage for the first time in two decades during their "victory rally" against "Hindi-imposition" in the state, after the state government rolled back the three-language policy. The Raj Thackeray-led MNS has been at the forefront of opposing the three-language formula. The party had even planned a major protest in Mumbai on Saturday against the policy, which mandates the teaching of Hindi, English, and Marathi in Maharashtra's schools.Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackery later clarified that he is not "anti-Hindi" but is against "Hindi-imposition" in the Marathi-speaking state.- EndsMust Watch

BMC polls made Uddhav team up with bro Raj. He may not recover politically if he fails UBT Sena's Uddhav Thackeray, a practitioner of fluid politics, joining hands with MNS boss cousin Raj, a far-right hardline Marathi-Maratha politician, is unsurprising – the bros want to win elections to India's richest civic body, BMC. Shiv Sena has won BMC polls since 1985, barring 1992-1996. Raj broke away in 2005 after Uddhav inherited the party. Shiv Sena split in 2022 – Eknath Shinde toppled Uddhav govt and walked away with CMship, sainiks, party and symbol. Cut to the present: MNS has zero electoral relevance, Uddhav is floundering. After Lok Sabha and state polls, elections to BMC – the jewel in Sena's crown – will be Uddhav's third test. He has struggled to articulate his idea of a more inclusive Sena within the secular camp. When he resigned his post ahead of a floor test, it was a principled stand for a politician. It however cost him a potential return to office in the Supreme Court case that followed. Uddhav won the people's sympathy, sweeping LS polls, only to come a cropper in state elections. Mahayuti (BJP+Shinde Sena) has held strong as a unit. UBT Sena long announced it wouldn't contest BMC polls as part of MVA. In tying up with MNS, Uddhav has turned another corner. Is there a meeting ground? If anything, it was Raj who raised eyebrows. He created an opening for a patch-up when he criticised Centre's reaction to Pahalgam attack. MNS brings sainiks, UBT Sena brings Uddhav. Will it be enough? In 2021-2022, OBC quota within BMC was a contentious issue – in 2021, under Uddhav, delimitation increased the number of wards from 227 to 236. Shinde scrapped that in Aug 2022. As the process for the election gets underway, it's such issues that will influence outcomes. The stakes are high for both Shinde Sena-BJP and UBT Sena-MNS. But for Uddhav personally, a loss can be hard to recover from. In the last BMC polls in 2017, undivided Shiv Sena won 84 seats, junior ally BJP 82. No one got a majority in the 227-seat BMC. Sena retained mayor's post. But eight years on, BJP's the Big Bro, and CM Fadnavis is aggressively if quietly calling the shots. Brothers join hands for big Mumbai election

Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray are both important politicians from Maharashtra. Even though they had problems in the past, they are now joining hands to try and win a very big election — the BMC polls. BMC stands for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the body that runs Mumbai city. It is the richest local government in India. Uddhav used to lead the Shiv Sena party, which ruled Mumbai's BMC for many years. But in 2005, Raj left the party and started his own group, called MNS. Then in 2022, another leader, Eknath Shinde, broke away from Uddhav and became the chief minister with help from BJP (the ruling party at the national level). Now, Uddhav's party is much smaller, and Raj's party doesn't win many votes. So, both brothers are teaming up to try and win back control of Mumbai. This is very important for Uddhav, because he already lost in the state assembly elections. Winning the BMC would help him get back his political power. But it's a risky move. Raj is known for being very strong about Marathi pride and sometimes takes extreme positions. Uddhav, on the other hand, has been trying to make his party more inclusive and friendly to all people. That makes their partnership a bit confusing. Still, Raj recently showed he might be ready to work together when he said something against the central government. That opened a door for talks between the two. In the last BMC election in 2017, Shiv Sena got the most seats (84), and BJP came close (82), but no one got a clear majority. This time, the BJP is stronger, and Deputy CM Fadnavis is quietly leading their plan. So, this election is a big deal. If Uddhav and Raj win, they might get a second chance. But if they lose, it could be the end of Uddhav's political journey. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email Disclaimer Views expressed above are the author's own.

Maya urges EC for fair Bihar polls

1 2 Lucknow: BSP president Mayawati on Monday said the murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent industrialist and BJP leader, in Patna, has heated up the politics of Bihar "in a new way" and the election commission must take steps to ensure peaceful elections in the state. She also reiterated that BSP will contest the upcoming Bihar elections solo. In her tweet on X, she said, "Although in Bihar, cases of atrocities, murders, and caste-based exploitation, especially against Dalits, backward classes, exploited, poor, and their women, and depriving people of these classes of their rights have always been a topic of discussion, the recent murder of Gopal Khemka has heated up the politics of the state in a new way along with the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. If the EC takes cognizance of this bloodshed and initiates appropriate action right now, it will be better for conducting peaceful elections in the state." She said: "During the special intensive revision of the voters' list in Bihar before the elections, all these violent incidents are being done by whom and for who's selfish interests? Not only is the coalition govt of the state in the dock regarding this, but the politics has also become quite volatile. It remains to be seen what effect it will have on political equations and elections in the state." She further said that BSP is a party of Bahujans, especially Dalits, other backward classes, deprived, exploited, poor and labourers and is fighting Bihar elections on its own under the principle and policy of depending on the physical and financial strength of its cadres and well-wishers. "That is why an appeal is made to the EC that whatever strict steps are needed to free Bihar elections from misuse of govt machinery as well as muscle, money, and criminal power should be taken in time so that the poll campaign proves to be free and fair," she said.
