'Transitioning': Michelle Obama reveals she's in therapy as she focuses on her ‘next phase' - while Barack divorce rumours swirl

Sky News AU07-05-2025

Former first lady Michelle Obama has revealed she's in therapy to help 'tune up' for the next phase of her life — as she continues to shoot down rumors that she and husband Barack are headed for divorce.
'At this phase of my life, I'm in therapy right now because I'm transitioning, you know?' the mom-of-two said in a recent interview on the Jay Shetty Podcast.
'I've finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact, I'm an empty nester, my girls are in—you know, they've been launched.'
The 61-year-old acknowledged she now has 'other voices' to talk to and a 'new person that's getting to know me' as she navigates life outside of public service.
'So, I'm getting that tune-up for this next phase because I believe this is a whole 'nother phase in life for me. And I now have the wisdom to know—let me go get some coaching while I'm doing it,' she said.
The ex-first lady admitted, too, that therapy sessions were helping her 'unwind some old habits' and 'sort through some old guilt.'
Michelle has been making the media rounds of late with her brother Craig Robinson — and has repeatedly addressed the rampant speculation her three-decade marriage is on the rocks.
The Obamas have been dogged by divorce gossip after Michelle opted to skip several high-profile events earlier this year — including President Trump's inauguration.
'If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,' she told entrepreneur Steven Bartlett in an interview last week.
'I would be problem-solving in public, like, 'Let me tell you what he did'.'
She went on to say that marriage is 'hard' for them but she 'wouldn't trade it.'
'The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever really, ever going to quit at it, because that's not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me,' she said.

Selena Gomez had 'the biggest crush' on Ice Cube

Selena Gomez used to have the "biggest crush" on Ice Cube. The 32-year-old beauty - who is engaged to record producer Benny Blanco - has revealed that she had a big crush on the rap star during her younger years. Appearing on a new episode of Complex's GOAT Talk, Selena said: "Can I tell you my first one that I had a crush on, Ice Cube? I had the biggest crush on him when I was, like, five." Selena subsequently explained why she was so infatuated with the rapper. She shared: "It's so weird, but I just thought he would protect me. "I'm only saying it simply based on my childhood." Selena actually listened to a lot of rap music during her younger years, and she was a huge fan of Eminem at the time, too. The chart-topping star explained: "One of [my favourite rappers] was Eminem only because I grew up listening to him "My dad was a DJ so he would remix all kinds of songs, and every time it was an Eminem song, I would just get so excited." Selena announced her engagement to Benny in December 2024, and the brunette beauty previously revealed that she feels "so excited" about the prospect of having children. The singer admitted that she'd love to raise children with Benny one day. Selena - who previously revealed that she isn't able to carry her own children - said on the Jay Shetty Podcast: "I don't know what will happen, obviously, but I love children. I have an 11-year-old sister that I absolutely adore. "I love making [children] laugh; they're just so sweet. So absolutely, when that day comes, I'm so excited for it." Selena first found stardom as a child, and Benny believes that she still shares a connection with children. The 37-year-old producer explained: "When you started doing this you were a kid and that was your way to connect to people and I feel like you still feel like you have that obligation to connect with young kids. "You shaped so many young people's lives, whether it was 'Barney', 'Wizards of Waverly Place' ... you're still finding your way to do that."

Barack and Michelle Obama had major parenting disagreement

Michelle Obama and her husband, Barack, hugely disagreed on using a controversial sleep training technique when Sasha and Malia were babies. The former First Lady reflected on their use of the Ferber Method in a conversation with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt on Wednesday's episode of her IMO podcast. The practice, invented by physician Richard Ferber, involves allowing a child to cry for predetermined intervals of time before receiving external comfort, Page Six reported. Haidt was discussing how he 'ferberized' his son when Michelle admitted that she and Barack 'did the same thing' despite initially not seeing eye-to-eye on the approach. 'I didn't want to do it,' Michelle said. 'Barack did it and I don't know that I could have done it because I wasn't sure about it — the notion that you just let the little person that you love cry and cry.' Michelle, 61, said that she 'couldn't even' deal with the thought of letting her kids cry — theorising that it may have had something to do with her oestrogen levels post-partum. 'We set it up where Barack took the night shift. I went to bed, which was helpful because it got me some sleep,' she said. Michelle said she would 'literally' cover her ears so she wouldn't hear her daughters crying at night. 'It took no longer than a week [for the method to work] and it was really after the first two nights, because we started early,' Michelle admitted. They had turned to Ferberization after weaning one of her daughters off of breastfeeding at about four or five months old, she explained. Michelle and the 63-year-old politician, who tied the knot in 1992, welcomed Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24, in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
