Rain, thunderstorms likely to continue over NW, central India for next 5 days: IMD
Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over east Rajasthan and Uttarakhand on Thursday. Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm, lightning and squally winds are likely to continue over Gujarat state on Thursday with a possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra and Kutch.
Heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over northeast India till May 11.
Unusual weather marked by gusty winds and overcast skies had started around May 1 and has been continuing since then over NW India and other parts of the country.
'This weather is very unusual in May. Thunderstorm activity will continue over NW India for next 3-4 days, but some models are also showing that thunderstorm, gusty winds will continue till May 13-14 marked by easterly winds, western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over the northern plains. Western Disturbance (WDs) are impacting frequently, and they are traveling slightly south of their normal position leading to impacgt on the plains,' said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, climate and meteorology, Skymet Weather.
Southwest monsoon is very likely to advance into South Andaman Sea, some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around May 13, IMD has forecast. The normal date for monsoon advancement over the South Andaman Sea is May 22.
'Monsoon advancement over South Andaman Sea is expected a week earlier than normal. But we cannot say if monsoon arrival over Kerala will also be early,' said Palawat. Normally, monsoon arrives over Kerala on June 1.
A western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation is lying over West Madhya Pradesh in lower to upper tropospheric levels. An upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over northwest Madhya Pradesh in lower tropospheric levels. An east-west trough is running from southwest Rajasthan to north Jharkhand in lower tropospheric levels. A trough is running from northeast Arabian sea to cyclonic circulation over West Madhya Pradesh in lower & middle tropospheric levels.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect Westen Himalayan region from May 9 onwards.
Under the influence of these systems, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds speed reaching 40-60 kmph likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand.
Meanwhile, heat wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 10 and 11; Gangetic West Bengal till May 13; Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand till May 13. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Odisha on May 8; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe on May 8.

Mizoram guv bats for weather radar in Mizoram
Agency: PTI Aizawl, Jul 23 (PTI) Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Wednesday stressed the need for installing a weather radar in the state, Raj Bhavan sources said. During a meeting with IMD's Aizawl director Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Singh emphasised the need for closer collaboration with line departments and the media to ensure that weather updates are communicated effectively in the local language for the benefit of people, sources said. The governor commended the work of the local meteorological centre in providing accurate weather forecasts and critical data, and urged it to intensify its efforts to disseminate information widely. Dwivedi presented a detailed overview of the IMD's initiatives and future plans through a PowerPoint presentation. Key initiatives include seven-day weather forecasts, air quality index to attract tourists, along with tailored weather forecasts for four popular tourist destinations in the state, the sources said. Weather data updates, issued every six hours, are shared through social media and the official website. Future plans set for implementation this year include installing a Doppler Weather Radar at Laipuitlang in Aizawl, as part of Mission Mausam, Dwivedi said. Given that 90 per cent of cyclonic activity impacting the state comes from the southern region, a new meteorological office will be established in Siaha in the southern part of the state, he said. A training and awareness hub for students will be set up at the meteorological centre in Aizawl, and plans are also afoot to upgrade the Aerodrome Meteorological Station (ASM) at Lengpui into an advanced Aerodrome Meteorological Office (AMO) in the near future, Dwivedi said. Heavy rainfall to lash several parts of Odisha till July 28: IMD
Agency: Bhubaneswar, Jul 23 (PTI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha till July 28. In its mid-day bulletin, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said a cyclonic circulation (remnant of tropical cyclone WIPHA) is expected over the north Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. Under its influence, a low-pressure area would form over the same region, the bulletin said. Under the impact of the system, heavy rainfall would occur in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, and Keonjhar before 8.30 am on Thursday, Manorama Mohanty, director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds (30-40 kmph) are also expected to occur in maximum parts of the state, excluding the southern region during the period, she said. The IMD centre has issued an Orange warning (be prepared to take action) for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Malkangiri and Koraput districts for Thursday. Similarly, Yellow warning (be aware) has been issued for the districts of Sundargarh, Deogarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul, Mohanty said. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds (30-40 kmph) are also expected in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts, she added. The director informed that the maximum impact of the expected lower pressure area would be experienced on July 25. Extreme rainfall is expected to occur in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts, she said, adding many parts of Odisha would experience heavy to normal rainfall on that day. As the sea condition is expected to remain rough, the weather scientist has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during July 24 to 27. The state has recorded 2 per cent above normal rainfall during this monsoon season (June 1 to July 23), she said. Weather Alert: IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai, red for Raigad and Konkan for July 24— check forecast for Maharashtra
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days for Mumbai and the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It issued an orange alert for the state capital and a red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in the Konkan region. The Konkan region and ghat areas in Maharashtra will receive heavy downpour due to a low-pressure formation in the Bay of Bengal, the Regional Meteorological Centre said. "In the next 24 hours, a low-pressure area is forming in the Bay of Bengal, and its impact will be visible in the Konkan region of Maharashtra," RMC official Shubhangi Bhute said. The weather department has issued the orange alert for Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Thursday. A yellow alert was issued for the three districts on Friday. The IMD has sounded the red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on Thursday. The red alert has been maintained for the three districts on Friday also. The Met department has issued a red alert for ghat areas of Satara, Pune and Kolhapur districts on Thursday, and the ghat regions of Satara and Pune on Friday. The IMD on Wednesday forecast heavy rain in south Bengal from July 24 to 28 owing to the likely formation of a low-pressure area over north Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur in some sub-Himalayan districts from July 25 to 28, the IMD said. Districts including North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places. Other south Bengal districts may also receive isolated heavy showers during the period. Kolkata is likely to see heavy rain on July 25, the IMD added.
