
Exclusive: How Afterburner's AI speeds up mortgage advice & frees up advisors
"Advisors don't enjoy typing out forms or writing up credit memos," explained Geoff Christopher, one of Afterburner's three co-founders. "They enjoy having those meaningful, value-add conversations with clients. So we're building tools to help them do just that."
Afterburner was spun out of Float Financial, a mortgage advisory firm co-founded by Christopher and Naylon Cassidy. The third co-founder, Jacob Muñoz, joined the business originally as a customer experience hire - but quickly revealed himself to be a skilled software engineer.
"Jacob automated his role within a month," Christopher said. "Then he just kept going, building tools to solve the pain points we face every day as advisors."
The idea for Afterburner emerged organically. The tools Muñoz developed for internal use at Float caught the attention of other financial advisory firms.
"We'd show other advisors what we were using, and they'd say, 'This would be incredible if we could use it too.' So that's when we realised we should build it out as a SaaS product," Christopher explained.
Unlike generic fintech tools that offer broad solutions, Afterburner is specifically tailored to mortgage advisors.
"We're not building features in a vacuum," he said. "Jacob sits next to a team of 14 financial advisors, and he's solving real problems in real time."
The first generation of Afterburner tools focuses on streamlining repetitive tasks. These include calculating borrowing capacity across multiple banks, generating credit memorandums, summarising client interviews from recorded calls, and translating complex lender approval letters into simple, client-friendly summaries.
"These are tasks that would normally take 10 to 20 minutes - or even longer," Christopher said. "Now, they're done in seconds."
The second generation of tools, currently in beta testing, goes even further. "You can feed in every document for a mortgage application, and Afterburner will write up the entire thing," he said. "It cross-references everything - bank statements, declared expenses, KiwiSaver balances, credit cards - and highlights discrepancies just like a seasoned banker would."
The platform also drafts follow-up questions, responds to bank queries, and even pre-fills complex forms like bank handovers and account onboarding paperwork. "We've automated about 95% of the repetitive workload," Christopher added.
This has allowed Float Financial to grow from 10 to 15 staff since January, with most of the team made up of advisors rather than support roles.
"We've eliminated so much admin, we don't need a big back-office team," he said.
"In fact, one of our support staff is now training to become an advisor. That's the kind of professional growth we want to enable."

When asked about compliance and data privacy, Christopher said the platform is fully encrypted and undergoing ISO 27001 certification.
"We take security and compliance incredibly seriously. Financial advisors using Afterburner must have clients sign privacy declarations, and we ensure data is only used for authorised purposes."
Afterburner's impact is being felt not just at Float but across the growing number of advisory firms adopting the platform.
"The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive," said Christopher. "When we demo the next-gen tools, advisors say, 'When can I have this?' They're excited - it's a huge leap in productivity."
Despite the power of AI, Christopher was quick to emphasise the continued importance of human connection.
"Most people still want to talk to a real person when they're making big financial decisions," he said. "It's about trust, and AI can't replicate that."
Looking ahead, Afterburner is eyeing expansion. Its AI-powered approach could be applied well beyond mortgages.
"We've already built tools for personal insurance, KiwiSaver, and investment advice," Christopher said. "And we're talking to accountants too - imagine automating tax returns and financial reports in the same way."
The team is also in discussions with large Australian aggregators, which could open the door to international markets. "With insurance and accountancy, the fundamentals are global," he noted.
As for the pace of innovation, Christopher admitted it's moving fast - even for the founders.
"It's crazy to think how far we've come with just the first generation of tools. The next phase? It's like 5x to 10x better," he said.
"And we're not rocket scientists," he added. "There are smarter people out there doing amazing things too."
"But for us, it's all about solving real problems for real people. That's what keeps us going."

No penalty clauses paid on stalled Waiouru army base housing project
Waiouru military training camp Photo: Google Maps The Defence Force (NZDF) says it has not paid any penalty clauses associated with its housing project at Waiouru army base . Penalty clauses can be paid when contractors or subcontractors sign up to projects that do not then go ahead. The $50 million-plus project has stalled , though both defence and Ngāti Rangi iwi consider it urgent, and the force issued a tender over a year ago for 50 new homes. No building has taken place. The NZDF once again refused to tell RNZ why it was still in negotiations with the iwi over the housing. It had appeared the talks were settled before it issued last year's tender. "Negotiations in relation to this matter remain underway. Accordingly, this information is withheld in full... to enable negotiations to be carried out without prejudice or disadvantage," it said in a response to a request under the Offiicial Information Act. "The NZDF's relationship with local iwi has not changed and remains vital to our use of the Waiouru Military Training Area," it added. It also said no penalty clauses had been paid, either related to the new builds or the retrofit upgrade of existing army rental houses. Defence housing and other facilities were very rundown, interfering with its military performance and leading to some personnel quitting, its own reports showed. It had an Estate Investment Committee that "provides performance monitoring, oversight, and direction", according to its annual report. But when RNZ asked for the latest three performance management reports by the committee, NZDF replied: "No reports are generated by the New Zealand Defence Force's Estate Investment Committee." It repeated this in relation to its Technology Governance Committee, when RNZ asked for its latest reports, too. A lot of the NZDF's information technology was old and needed replacing, or were in the middle of years-long projects. Funding was set aside in Budget 2025 for this.

KiwiSaver hardship reveals hidden cost of this economic downturn
We had news last week that KiwiSaver members withdrew more than $470 million for hardship reasons in the past 12 months amid continuing economic stress. Inland Revenue figures showed $470.7m was taken out of KiwiSaver in the June financial year, up 56.6% from $300.5m over the prior period. Looking back through the figures, there has certainly been a big spike in withdrawals in the past two years, but they have been on the rise for several years. Since Covid, both the number of people withdrawing funds and the amount withdrawn have risen steadily. As a barometer of the general economic situation, that isn't great. But the bigger problem with these hardship withdrawals is that the ultimate cost is (quite literally) compounded through the years. More than $1.3 billion of KiwiSaver funds has been withdrawn for hardship reasons in the past five years. If we do some back-of-the-envelope calculations and assume this money could have earned around 7% returns for the next 20 years, then we get a figure of more than $5b that will be missing from the nation's pool of retirement funds by 2045. Given the current trend of withdrawals, I suspect this is a conservative estimate. I understand why we allow withdrawals for hardship. It doesn't make sense for people to lose their homes or to go hungry when they have thousands of dollars sitting in a KiwiSaver account, so I'm not advocating that we stop allowing the withdrawals. However, there is a hidden cost and the situation highlights just how crucial it is for the Government to put more focus on retirement savings. There is a lot more money coming out of the KiwiSaver scheme to fund people into their first homes. Since Covid hit, an average of about $1.2b a year has been withdrawn from KiwiSaver for first home purchases. A home is an asset at least, and home ownership is an important step on the path to financial independence. I suspect we just have to accept the first home buyer withdrawals as a feature of the KiwiSaver scheme. If young people are in the scheme from the start of their working life and have $10,000 or $20,000 to put towards a house deposit, they are probably ahead of where many in my generation were at the same age. But the reality is that as a nation, we're well behind on where we need to be with our retirement savings. According to Stats NZ projections, the percentage of the population aged 65+ will increase from roughly 16-17% in the early 2020s to about 19-20% by 2030. By 2050, around 24-26% of New Zealanders are expected to be 65+. The old-age dependency ratio (ratio of elderly to working-age population) is expected to nearly double between 2020 and 2050. Our annual superannuation bill already comes in at more than $20b, and Treasury has projected that to rise to about $45b by 2037. According to Budget 2025 data, New Zealand Superannuation costs $4352 per person per year, making it the third-largest area of government spending after welfare ($6181 per person) and health ($5804 per person). From the Treasury's long-term fiscal projections, spending on NZ Super is projected to grow from 4.3% of GDP in 2010 to 7.9% in 2060, an increase of 3.6 percentage points. It is also rising as a percentage of the Government's total tax revenue – from about 17% now, it is projected to rise above 21% by 2037. So we know we have a problem. It seems almost certain that the age of superannuation will have to be raised to 67 in the coming years – despite the current opposition of NZ First and Labour. Future governments will almost certainly come under more pressure to means-test. KiwiSaver, which currently has total funds of $122b, is one of our great hopes. But the total figure is flattering. There are more than three million KiwiSaver members so the average fund size is just $37,000. Hopefully, that will be skewed by a lot of young people who will see their savings grow dramatically in the next decades. That brings us back to the downside of withdrawing funds early for hardship, though. We need to be saving more, not less. Moves by the Government to lift the default contribution rate for both employees and employers to 4% from April 2028 were a step in the right direction. However, they pale in comparison to Australia's compulsory scheme, which requires 12% employer contributions. The scheme has the equivalent of $4.5 trillion invested, making Australia the fifth-largest holder of pension fund assets in the world, not per capita but in nominal terms. Australia, for the record, also allows people to withdraw funds for hardship, but one suspects fewer people there need to. If we want to make the most of the KiwiSaver scheme we have, we need to look more closely at who is withdrawing their money and why. Meanwhile, young Kiwis are voting with their feet and joining the Australian Superannuation scheme ... by virtue of moving to work there. Lotto NZ head of corporate communications Will Hine said Lotto NZ was 'aware' of TheLotter, and Kiwi Lotto bosses have previously raised the issue of the syndicates with the Department of Internal Affairs. The global online gambling market – including online casino, lottery and sports and racing markets - is estimated to be worth $97 billion, with a study by market research company FNF Research predicting it will grow to $306b by 2030. The Herald reported yesterday how Lotto NZ had blocked a global gambling group from buying tickets for big-dollar Lotto Powerball draws. Lotto NZ terms and conditions forbid ticket sales to people outside New Zealand, and tickets on-sold internationally become ineligible for prizes. But that hasn't stopped a 'commercial syndicate' trying to evade the rules and buy Powerball tickets anyway. Hine said overseas sites 'on-sell lottery tickets from a range of jurisdictions' and offer copycat versions of national lotteries - or both.
