Most financial sector workers believe AI will lead to job losses

A majority of people employed in the financial sector believe the increased use of
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
will result in job losses as well as diminished pay and conditions, according to a new report compiled by
Tasc
for the
Financial Services Union (FSU)
.
The report, which is due to be published by the union on Thursday, cites the results of a survey of about 600 financial services workers from across Ireland, as well as a small number based in Britain.
It suggests many of those employed in the sector see potential benefits in the introduction of AI, but want consultation on its expanded role, training and safeguards and how they affect hiring and promotion decisions.
'While many workers acknowledge AI's potential benefits, including increased efficiency and improved decision-making,' suggests the report's author, Molly Newell, 'these advantages are overshadowed by fears of job loss, wage stagnation and intensified managerial oversight.'

Job security is a key issue for most of those surveyed, with 88 per cent believing AI will prompt significant job displacement, and 60 per cent saying they feel less secure in their roles now than they did five years ago.
'Notably, workers under the age of 35 and those in administrative roles express the highest levels of anxiety about AI-driven displacement,' the report finds.
Younger workers generally feel better equipped to deal with the technology, however, while men are more likely than women to describe their engagement with AI as a positive experience.
Nevertheless, almost 80 per cent of all respondents who used AI tools regularly said they improved job performance, and 63 per cent believed AI enhanced their overall experience of work.

However, significant majorities also identified concerns, with 61 per cent saying they worried about the role AI might play in deciding who was hired, fired or promoted. Almost as many, 58 per cent, suggested they were uneasy about the issue of increased monitoring by management, and reduced privacy.
The survey found widespread support for Government regulation of AI in the sector and protections against job losses.

With only slightly more than a quarter, 28 per cent, saying they feel adequately prepared to use AI tools in the course of their daily work, there was also substantial backing for training and reskilling programmes funded, in some instances, by tax breaks or grants.
The report recommends a range of measures including consultation on the introduction and expansion of AI deployment and oversight committees, to include representatives of both management and staff, to monitor implementations and workplace impact.
'A proactive and transparent approach to AI governance will enhance worker confidence, reduce resistance to technological change, and promote ethical AI deployment. Strengthening collective bargaining around AI will not only protect workers' rights but also foster a more resilient and adaptive financial services sector,' the report suggests.

Pre-budget submissions are all about pleadings. Every special interest group in the State makes a pitch for more resources. They all consider their proposals to be in the wider public and economic interest. Some are worthy, many more are largely self-interested. This year the whole process appears to have kicked off earlier than usual, perhaps on the understanding that the largesse of recent years is unlikely to be repeated this time around. In the first place, there is no election. Worries for the medium-term health of Europe's most open economy in a climate where tariffs, trade wars and an absence of consistency on policy are increasingly the norm also will inevitably push Ministers towards a more cautious approach. And for what money is available, the need is to prioritise investment in infrastructure. Expensive upgrades to electricity, water and sewerage networks that are increasingly being cited by foreign direct investors among factors counting against Ireland Inc are needed. Savills says first-time buyers in Dublin are paying an average of €515,000 for a home, putting them beyond the €500,000 ceiling for Help-to-Buy. It wants that ceiling increased to at least €621,000 to take account of inflation, it says. First, averages are notoriously prone to manipulation by singular expensive property sales. Second, the more reliable median data from the same CSO note shows that prices exceed €460,000 only in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown among the four Dublin local authority areas. Ignoring that when calling for a higher ceiling is not making property more affordable for first-time buyers in general, only for the very wealthy. It is worth remembering that while the marketing speaks about providing a helping hand for first-time buyers – with even the scheme's name selected for the same reason – Help-to-Buy was from the start a scheme put together to help developers make the numbers stack up on building starter homes. That's not happening, as supply constraints (and prices rising at their fastest rate in 10 years) attest, so for the State – and those first-time buyers – what is the value of widening the incentive?

Paul Coulson faces last stand in battle to retain control of Ardagh

Ten years ago last month, Dublin businessman Paul Coulson walked away from a €3 billion deal to buy a glass-bottle business being sold by French building materials group Saint-Gobain. It seemed a rare moment of restraint for a man in a hurry, having spent the previous 15 years turning a once sleepy Irish bottle company into a multibillion-euro packaging giant – Ardagh Group – through a series of purchases funded by debt raised in the high-cost, junk-bond market. It would not last long. Less than a year later, Coulson unveiled a similar-sized transaction, but one that would catapult Ardagh into the business of making cans for beers and fizzy drinks. Today, that business – Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), whose customers range from Coca-Cola and Heineken to Nestlé – has surfaced as a prized asset as Coulson and holders of some of wider group's $12.5 billion (€10.7 billion) of borrowings scramble to salvage what they can from an empire saddled with too much debt. Coulson effectively owns 36 per cent of Ardagh Group. READ MORE Ardagh Group has acknowledged for more than a year that it needs to reduce its liabilities, after both its glass and beverage cans businesses had been hit since the Covid-19 pandemic by inflation, soaring interest rates, and soft consumer demand on both sides of the Atlantic. The heavily-indebted business proposed in March that a group of senior unsecured bondholders write off much of the $2.32 billion they are owed in exchange for taking full ownership of the glass containers part of the business. The plan also envisaged Ardagh Group spinning its shares in AMP into new company (NewCo). This would be 80 per cent owned by Coulson and other existing Ardagh Group shareholders – with the unsecured creditors receiving the remaining 20 per cent. Holders of a further $1.79 billion of the group's riskiest debt, so-called payment-in-kind bonds issued by a holding company at the top of the Ardagh corporate tree, know they're toast, with these notes trading below 5 per cent of their original value. Talks with the unsecured creditors broke down in May after they pitched a proposal that would see them take 40 per cent, rather than 20 per cent, of AMP, which has seen its prospects improve in recent quarters, even as the glass containers arm of the group continues to grapple with weak demand. The unsecured creditors also wanted the $784 million of preference shares they were being offered in the NewCo to be increased to $1.07 billion. AMP, in which Ardagh Group has a 76 per cent stake, is listed on Wall Street, where investors have also recently come to appreciate the improving outlook for this business – even as the glass side struggles. The market value of AMP, which has $3.98 billion of ring-fenced borrowings, has jumped more than 45 per cent to $2.59 billion so far this year. This was driven by a spike in April when its chief, Oliver Graham, signalled that the business had 'turned a corner', helped by a rebound in demand for energy drinks, sparkling water and health segments. The value of Coulson's indirect 27 per cent stake in AMP has increased as a result to more than $700 million. This is well off the $1.7 billion it was worth when the stock debuted on the New York Stock Exchange almost four years ago. It is also a fraction of the now 73-year-old's €2.4 billion interest in the wider Ardagh Group when it peaked in April 2021 – before the group delisted and floated its beverage cans unit. It emerged last week that certain bondholders have offered Coulson – who remains on the board of the group, having retired as chairman in late 2023 – and other investors in Ardagh Group $250 million to hand over total control of the empire to creditors and walk away. Shareholders include management and investors that remained on board a tiny version of the current group that was listed in Dublin more than two decades ago. The bondholders clearly do not feel the need to keep Coulson on after a restructuring. This differs from the case of fellow former junk-bond darling, Denis O'Brien , when his overindebted Digicel mobile phone company ran out of road two years ago. Digicel had no equity value when its bondholders took control in a subsequent debt-for-equity swap. However, the creditors left O'Brien with a 10 per cent stake and stock warrants that would entitle him to a further 10 per cent, subject to the company meeting certain targets, knowing they needed him to maintain key relationships with regulators and politicians across its 25 emerging and, in some cases, frontier markets. The problem for Ardagh Group bondholders is the corporate web structure – including a company set up in April 2022, at a time when interest rates were soaring globally, under the group to hold its 76 per cent stake in AMP. This was designated a so-called unrestricted subsidiary, putting its assets out of reach of group creditors. The directors of that subsidiary sought fit last year to set up another unit to hold the prized asset. Bondholders thinking they can wave off Coulson and a small number of legacy investors in Ardagh Group with a $250 million check had better have the bottle for a battle.

‘Trump always chickens out' is starting to look more like ‘the man always gets his way'

Keeping The Donald happy is a preoccupation these days. Europe has promised to increase defence spending, with Nato head Mark Rutte buttering up the US president in a message praising his action in Iran – and later referring to 'daddy' using strong language to achieve a ceasefire between that country and Israel. And in the economic arena, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent announced late on Thursday that G7 countries had agreed to rewrite a key part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) corporate tax deal in the face of tax threats from Washington. There is a familiar pattern here, with US threats based on political, military or economic muscle met by concessions from elsewhere. The Trump trick is to successfully move the goalposts. Just look at trade. If you had said before Donald Trump took office that the US could impose 10 per cent in additional tariffs on most imports from the European Union and meet – so far – no retaliatory action from Brussels, then that would have sounded crazy. READ MORE Now there is a fair chance that the EU will accept that these tariffs remain in place as part of EU/US trade talks now under way in return for Washington backing off more extreme threats. The narrative has been, of course, that Trump always chickens out of imposing the more extreme tariff threats. He did have to pull back on his initial 'Liberation Day' tariffs and he has done some kind of a deal with China . Market upheavals and fears of economic damage at home do stay his hand. But faced with the threat of 50 per cent tariffs on its exports to the US, the EU looks to be ready to do a deal which offers more to Washington than it does to EU capitals. Trump's madness wins over Brussels process. The pressure on the European Commission to agree a deal is growing, and there is no cast-iron guarantee that the EU can stick together. Germany , where car exports are being hit hard by a special 25 per cent tariff on this sector, is pushing hard for a quick agreement. That might suit Ireland, too; though, of course, it will depend on the terms – and particularly what is said on pharma. Dublin would prefer no additional tariffs on any exports to the US, but that does not seem likely. The other main Irish interest will be the tech sector, where there are reports of some progress as part of wider negotiations on non-tariff aspects of the EU/US deal. The last thing Ireland wants is for the big US digital tech players with bases here to be drawn into the trade battle. That said, in the 'nothing is agreed until everything is agreed' world of trade talks, we will just have to wait and see on this one. This week's agreement on tax – in which the US will drop a new part of its budget bill, section 899, which would have given it powers to impose taxes on investors and businesses from other countries operating in the US – is another sign of Europe accommodating Trump. To achieve this, the other G7 countries are offering to rewrite part of the OECD corporate tax deal. This would have allowed other countries – including Ireland – to require US companies to pay top-up taxes in their jurisdiction if they did not meet the 15 per cent minimum tax payment rule elsewhere. Agreeing the change is a notable backing down by the European members of the G7 and chips away again at the OECD corporate tax deal, painfully negotiated over many years. The EU now looks likely to give ground on the tariffs as well, at least to the extent of accepting the 10 per cent remaining in place. This may lead to some kind of an agreement by July 9th – likely one that requires more talking in the months ahead. And a falling-out between the two sides can by no means be ruled out, leading to Trump imposing higher tariffs to try to force more concessions. Were this to happen, the EU would finally have to respond with its own tariffs. And then we would be into dangerous waters. Brussels and EU capitals will try to avoid this all-out trade war. But they will only do so by agreeing a deal that gives more to Washington than it does to the EU. Talk at this week's EU summit by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen that the bloc would go off and join an existing group of 11 Asia-Pacific countries – who have formed a trade partnership that the UK has also signed up to – is an irrelevant distraction. There is nothing wrong with diversifying trade, but this looks about as convincing a negotiating tactic as the UK's talk of doing deals with far-flung countries during the Brexit process. So the EU looks to be on the back foot. It will offer more concessions than Washington and hope that this is enough to at least extend the talks with the US, and perhaps tie down a few key areas. Ireland has escaped the worst of the tariffs so far, largely because pharma has been excluded, though other exports, including food and drink, have been hit by the additional 10 per cent charge. Continuing to avoid too much economic pain would require two things. One, obviously, is the avoidance of a trade war. Ireland will argue for the quick deal. The second is some agreement in relation to pharmaceuticals which is not too punitive. Given the scale of Irish pharma exports to the US, this is clearly the area where Ireland remains most exposed in the short term, either to tariffs being imposed or other tax or negotiated measures which mean less profit being reported here and thus less corporation tax. And in the longer term, it puts questions over the scale of US investment here, particularly to serve the American market. Having done so well over recent years, Ireland remains in the frame here. It is hard to see all this uncertainty being taken off the table all at once. Ireland will hope that the mood in the EU will mean some kind of deal before the July 9th deadline. Beyond that, more negotiations and questions will lie ahead. As we see with this weekend's fresh outbreak of trade tensions between the US and Canada, the path of negotiations with Trump is rarely straightforward. Trump has tilted the pitch in his favour and will continue to push for more. And the longer-term damage he is creating to the international economy and political relations won't worry him one bit.
