Haryana: Wheat yield up by 30% in last decade: Data

Hindustan Times4 hours ago

The wheat yield per hectare (Ha) in the country grew from 2,750 kgs during 2014-15 rabi season to 3,587 kgs in 2024-25, which is nearly a 30% increase, the Karnal-based ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) said. Accordingly, the wheat yield stood at 3,587 Kg/Ha for this season, recording a mild increase from 3,559 kg/Ha from last year, while annual production also rose from 113.29 million tonnes (MT) in 2023-24 to 117.51 MT this season. Wheat scientists said that yield refers to the amount of crop produced per unit of land area, typically measured in kilograms or tonnes per hectare.
Yield is considered a key indicator for agricultural productivity and quality of land, reflecting how much crop is produced from a particular area, they said.
Accordingly, the wheat yield stood at 3,587 Kg/Ha for this season, recording a mild increase from 3,559 kg/Ha from last year, while annual production also rose from 113.29 million tonnes (MT) in 2023-24 to 117.51 MT this season.
The data was prepared according to the third estimate figures by the union ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare released last month.
The ministry is likely to release fourth and final estimate by end of July or August, the scientists said.
Figures shared by IIWBR, also showed that the country witnessed a 36% rise in annual production from 86.52 MT in 2014-15 to 117.51 MT in a decade's time, while also recording an increase in area under wheat from 314.6 lakh hectares to 327.6 lakh hectares during the period.
During the last season, the area under wheat was 318.33 lakh hectares.
Wheat production more than target
As per the figures of the third estimate, the wheat production achieved this year so far (117.51 MT) is slightly above than the target of 115 MT.
This is an all-time high in the history of wheat production in India. India is the world's second-largest wheat grower after China.
During an interaction with Hindustan Times, IIWBR director Ratan Tiwari highlighted that the deployment of climate resilient seed varieties and assured price on crop are primary reasons behind this record.
'DBW187, DBW303, DBW222, HI1634 and HD3386 were the top breeder seed indented varieties distributed by the institute to the farmers in the country. We consider DBW187 as a mega variety or pan-India variety. Better reach for the seeds is also the reason there has been a whooping rise in wheat yield in the last one decade,' he said.
'Moreover, there is a growing awareness among the farmers about changing weather patterns and they are shifting more to new heat-tolerant varieties. I believe that despite temperature fluctuation during the early months of this year, there was no fall in productivity, because of these seed varieties. Also, no disease and crop lodging also helped in achieving this. The grain quality also appears good,' he added.

PMLA court allows restoration of ₹952-cr property attached by ED

MUMBAI: In an important development, a special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court on June 25 allowed restoration of assets ₹ 952 crore attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case against Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS), its group companies, and associated entities. The property - Surat-based plant of Vadraj Cement Limited - would be restored to Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd, which has taken over the defunct company through a resolution process. (Shutterstock) The Mumbai zonal office of the agency initiated investigation under the PML Act against IL&FS and associated entities for their alleged involvement in the generation and laundering of proceeds of crime (POC). During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Vadraj Cement Limited (formerly ABG Cement Ltd), a group company of ABG, had availed financial assistance from IL&FS Financial Services Ltd (IFIN), which was subsequently declared as a non-performing asset, said agency sources. The investigation established that loans amounting to ₹ 952 crore were obtained fraudulently and were identified as POC, they added. Accordingly, the immovable properties of Vadraj Cement Ltd, comprising its cement plant in Surat, were provisionally attached by ED on January 21, 2020. The attachment was confirmed by the Adjudicating Authority on August 5, 2021. A prosecution complaint or charge sheet in the money laundering case was also filed before the special PMLA court in Mumbai, praying for the confiscation of properties attached as POC. According to ED sources, Punjab National Bank was the major lender to Vadraj Cement Ltd with an admitted claim of ₹ 2,122 crore. The defunct cement company's other major lenders include Union Bank ( ₹ 1,620 crore), Indian Overseas Bank ( ₹ 1,419 crore), Central Bank of India ( ₹ 1,391 crore) and JC Flower ARC ( ₹ 677 crore). Subsequently, M/s Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd, a subsidiary of the Nirma Group and the successful resolution applicant under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC), filed an application before the special PMLA court seeking restoration of the attached property to facilitate implementation of the resolution plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal, Mumbai, on April 1, 2025. Under the scheme approved by the NCLT, Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd will pay ₹ 1,706 crore to Vadraj Cement's financial creditors in lieu of its acquisition of the defunct company. Considering the intent of the PMLA to restitute or restore the POC to bonafide legitimate claimants, the ED submitted no objection before the special court for the release of property attached to the bonafide legitimate claimants. Based on ED's NOC, the special court on June 25 passed an order to restitute the attached immovable properties to the bonafide claimants - Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Ltd, subject to filing an undertaking to return or restore the property or its value as may be directed in future. The court has also instructed ED to prepare a detailed inventory of the property prior to handing over its possession to the successful resolution applicant.

Court refuses protection from arrest to former CEO of NICB in loan fraud case

MUMBAI: A special court has refused to grant interim protection from arrest to Abhimanyu Bhoan, the former chief executive officer of the New India Cooperative Bank, in the loan fraud case involving the prominent entertainment, media and communications conglomerate, Percept Group. Bhoan is already under judicial custody in connection with the alleged embezzlement of ₹ 122 crore from the cash reserves of the cooperative bank. Mumbai, India - March 9, 2025: Voice of Victim's program organized in Mira Road for the depositors of New India Cooperative Bank, banking expert Vishwas Utgi provided guidance to the attending depositors in Mumbai, India, on Sunday, March 9, 2025. (Photo by Satish Bate/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) As per the EOW (economic offences wing) of police, the group had allegedly obtained a loan of ₹ 77 crore from the bank, out of which ₹ 18.56 crore was waived by senior bank officials after receiving kickbacks. As per the FIR, the directors of the bank allegedly accepted ₹ 6.37 crore in kickbacks for declaring the loan as a non-performing asset (NPA) and waiving ₹ 18.56 crore on the principal amount as well as on the due interest. Bhoan's advocate submitted that he had no role in waiving the loan since he had twice rejected the proposals made by the company to settle the loan under OTS scheme (one-time settlement). He alleged that the board of directors, who are in higher positions than Bhoan, changed the policy of OTS and waived the loans. The court noted that Bhoan was the CEO of the bank when the fraud was committed. 'Loan transaction of ₹ 49 crore was settled by the applicant and the board of directors of the bank for 34 crore and ₹ 18 crores waived, causing wrongful loss of such amounts to the bank,' observed special sessions judge NG Shukla, in an order passed on June 24. The offence was committed between September 2014 and October 2023 when the loan was sanctioned to Percept Group without due diligence. It is alleged that the EOW found documents in Bhoan's house while investigating the trail of bad loans extended by the bank. As per the EOW, Bhoan, Hiren Bhanu (former chairperson of the bank) along with others fabricated bills in the name of a UK-based shell company and charged those sums, collectively amounting to ₹ 6.37 crore, to Percept. 'Considering the nature of the transaction and relation of applicant with the directors of Percept Group with regard to submitting bills of a sports event, I am of the view that applicant is not entitled for interim relief,' said the court. The EOW had arrested Bhoan in February this year after a surprise audit by the Reserve Bank of India revealed that ₹ 122 crore had been spirited away from the bank's cash reserves. A metropolitan magistrate court had rejected his bail plea in May.

Kolhapuri chappal could step into global market after Prada row

MUMBAI: From 'chappal chor' to brand ambassador, of sorts, Italian luxury fashion house Prada has made a swift about-turn, expressing its willingness to discuss a revenue-sharing model for Kolhapuri chappals made by traditional Indian artisans and a symbol of Marathi pride. Local artisans are also demanding that Prada use the 'Kolhapuri' label when selling these chappals in the international market. Prada has acknowledged that its Spring/Summer 2026 men's footwear line (right) was inspired by Kolhapuri chappals, after backlash over lack of credit to the original artisans. (Ht Archives/Photo by Mahendra Parikh and Vidya Subramanian / Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) Prada's pivot comes after the international fashion brand showcased the classic T-strapped, flat and intricately braided chappal at the spring summer 2026 menswear collection at the Milan Fashion Week recently. This drew loud protests from local Kolhapuri artisans, who accused Prada of 'cultural appropriation' for failing to give due recognition to the chappals, which represent an 800-year tradition that originated in Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Lalit Gandhi, president of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA), had written to Prada on June 25, urging acknowledgement and collaboration regarding traditional Kolhapuri footwear designs. Gandhi told HT that Lorenzo Bertelli, head, corporate social responsibility at Prada, had replied to him on June 27. Gandhi said, 'We welcome the response from Prada, which admitted that the design it had showcased had been inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear.' The fashion house, Bertelli had added in his letter, was ready to 'recognise the value of specialised craftspeople by meaningful exchange with local artists and MACCIA'. Gandhi said he interpreted this to mean that Prada was open to working out a revenue-sharing formula with local Kolhapuri artisans, for the sale of the traditional chappals in the global market. He added that a team from Prada would soon arrive in India for discussions. 'Kolhapuri chappals are priced between ₹ 400 and ₹ 4,000, while Prada sells similar footwear for more than ₹ 1 lakh. So there is huge scope. This row has opened the doors of the global market for Kolhapuri chappals and local craftsmen will greatly benefit.' A statement issued by MACCIA said, 'Lorenzo Bertelli, head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Prada Group… acknowledged the global recognition of Kolhapuri chappals, which are symbolic of Kolhapur's identity and Maharashtra's cultural pride.' After the controversy broke last week, Kolhapuri artisans, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dhananjay Mahadik, met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday and urged him to advocate for them with the central government, which could then push their case with the luxury fashion brand. With Prada now acknowledging the signature Kolhapuri chappal, Mahadik said, 'I welcome the letter by Prada. But along with revenue-sharing, we are also demanding that the fashion house use a label recognising the footwear as 'Kolhapuri footwear' when it sells the chappals in the global market. The craft and heritage of Kolhapur should get due recognition worldwide.'
