
PM Modi to inaugurate last segment of Metro 3 in August: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis
Describing Metro Line 3 as an 'engineering marvel,' Mr. Fadnavis said the project overcame significant geological and logistical challenges during its execution. 'We came from under the Mithi River and have built metro stations in congested areas like Girgaon. Only two stations remain, and once completed, Line 3 will be fully operational,' he said.
Following the inauguration, Mr. Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde undertook a ride on the newly completed stretch. The 9.77-km segment, comprising six stations, received safety clearance earlier this week from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety. It will be opened to the public from Saturday.
The Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor (Metro Line 3) is the first fully underground metro project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The first phase, linking Aarey to BKC, became operational in October 2024. The final stretch, from Acharya Atre Chowk to Colaba (Phase 2B), spans 10.99 km and includes 11 stations, ultimately connecting Cuffe Parade to the city's central business districts.
'Since 2022, we have accelerated the execution of all metro lines. By next year, 50 km of new lines will be added, followed by another 50 km the year after, significantly enhancing public transport in the MMR,' Mr. Fadnavis said.
According to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), the fully operational Line 3 is expected to serve approximately 13 lakh passengers daily, with each eight-coach train accommodating up to 2,500 commuters. Since its launch, the Aarey-BKC stretch has recorded a cumulative ridership of over 41.6 lakh, with a daily average of 20,030 passengers.
Seamless connectivity amid urban challenges
The newly inaugurated section connects key commercial hubs such as BKC and Worli with cultural landmarks including Siddhivinayak Temple, Mahim Dargah, Mahim Church, Shivaji Park, and several prominent theatres. The estimated travel time across the stretch is 15 minutes.
The construction faced multiple hurdles, including complex tunnelling under rocky terrain, coastal regulation clearances, traffic management in dense urban areas, land acquisition, and permissions for mangrove and tree felling. Officials stated that despite these constraints, the corridor promises to alleviate congestion along the Western Express Highway and suburban railway lines, while enhancing multimodal connectivity in Mumbai.

PUNE : Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that if local 'dadagiri' and interference continue, Pune would lose its leadership role in the industrial sector. Pune has a lot of potential but other centres like Sambhajinagar and Nagpur are fast emerging. Industries are going there even though Pune's biggest capital is manpower and innovation. Hence, the city should concentrate on innovation. Sambhajinagar is the leading EV capital and very soon, it will cross Pune,' he added. Niti Aayog's chief executive officer V R Subramanyham spoke about Pune's advantages, potential, and the weak points it needs to tackle to become a world-class city. 'The central government has already identified and started work for four economic growth hubs and the project implementations have started. Now, we are going to declare five more economic growth hubs, including Pune and Katak. Pune is leading in manufacturing, IT, automobile and education but there are many more sectors which have a lot of potential. For example, agri processing and urban tourism.' He also touched on poor public transport, road network, less open spaces, and traffic issues, calling them hindrances to Pune's growth. Earlier, the chief minister had announced with regard to infrastructure that his government is planning a new Airport Road and a Ring Road. 'It would create more positive impact for the city. Earlier, land and capital used to attract industries but nowadays, industries are going where skilled manpower is available,' he said. Fadnavis also said that to meet global standards, a place need to have ease of business and hassle-free policies. 'Government needs to change its mindset and approve the required permissions within a timeframe. Execution of project on time is important, otherwise the projects become generation projects which keep on progressing but with no output,' he added.

NMC to spend Rs2,100cr on resurfacing 61 major roads
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake a Rs2,100 crore initiative to resurface as many as 61 major roads throughout the city. This large-scale infrastructure project is for the upcoming Kumbh Mela , which the city is set to host between 2026 and 2028. The road development will happen in three phases. The first phase will cover 23 major roads, including sections of Nashik's existing inner, middle, and outer ring roads. They are vital as they connect to national and state highways, particularly in the Panchavati, Nashik Road, and Nashik East divisions. The civic body also plans to widen some of these roads where possible. The second phase will see development of 29 roads, including the significant Shahi Marg. And the third phase will involve re-laying of nine roads. This extensive upgrade of the road network aims to significantly improve connectivity and infrastructure, preparing the city for the large number of devotees expected for the Kumbh Mela. Nashik is one of four cities that hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The last Mela was held in 2015. "We will require around Rs373 crore for developing the road network by March 2026. The remaining amount will be required in phases during the next financial year," the official said. "The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000-crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela and submitted it to state govt for approval. Of the total amount, the public works department has proposed Rs4,000 crore for road works, construction of nine bridges, and other works," the official added. During the recent meetings, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the NMC and other authorities concerned to undertake those works which will need around two years for completion. Accordingly, the NMC completed the tender process and finalised a private agency for the construction of sewage treatment plants, sewage pumping stations and diversion of sewage from the 22 nullahs towards nearby STPs. The total cost of these sewage management works is around Rs1,475 crore. The civic body also started the tender process for the construction of the five bridges and strengthening of the Gadge Maharaj bridge. Apart from the STPs and bridges, the NMC has also prioritised road works.
