"A Reward": Minister Govind Gaude Dropped From Goa Cabinet Weeks After Corruption Remarks
Goa Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude was on Wednesday dropped from the state cabinet, almost a month after he alleged corruption in the tribal welfare department headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Govind Gaude called the decision a "reward" for him on Goa Revolution Day, which is celebrated on June 18 every year.
BJP Goa unit president Damodar Naik confirmed to PTI that Gaude was removed from the council of ministers.
State Under Secretary (General Administration) Shreyas D'Silva said that the Governor of Goa had accepted the recommendation by the CM, following which Gaude ceased to be a member of the council of ministers with immediate effect.
Naik, however, didn't mention the official reason for sacking the minister. "This is a decision of the state government," he said without elaborating.
CM Sawant was not available for comments.
Reacting to the development, Gaude tweeted, "I have been rewarded this fate on the Goa Revolution Day for standing up for the downtrodden communities. Gratitude to my government and the party for liberating me to continue the struggle that I voiced for." Addressing a state-level function on May 26, Gaude had dubbed the state tribal welfare department inefficient and claimed its officers were taking bribes to sign files, drawing a sharp reaction from the BJP, which warned of action.
Latching on to Gaude's claims, Congress had demanded that Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai sack the state government for "rampant corruption".
The 53-year-old MLA from the Priol assembly segment in North Goa took oath in March 2022, after the BJP won the state elections. Gaude had also served as a minister in the Sawant-led cabinet from 2019 to 22.

Along with ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and D Seethakka, Bhatti presented a 1.05 crore cheque to 151 mandal-level women's groups, who had leased buses to the TGSRTC. He said this is a promising start, with more revenue-generating opportunities for SHGs in departments like education, transport, and energy. The deputy CM urged SHGs to meet between July 7 and 9 at village, mandal, and district levels to prepare business plans and identify projects. Opportunities include supplying school uniforms, managing canteens, undertaking school repair works, and generating up to 1,000 MW of solar power under new energy department initiatives. Bhatti added that SHGs will also be supported with bank linkages, accident insurance, and buyback of their products. Transport minister Ponnam said over 200 crore free bus trips by women have been recorded so far, with the govt reimbursing 6,500 crore to the RTC. "This scheme has also helped stabilise the RTC financially," he added.

Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): On the eve of the 90th birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, prominent Indian leaders, including BJP leader Vijay Jolly and JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, attended a celebratory event in Dharamshala to honour the revered figure. Speaking at the event, Vijay Jolly expressed deep admiration for the Dalai Lama, emphasizing India's strong bond with the spiritual leader. 'Well, India has a common relationship of friendship, tolerance, peace, and prosperity with the Dalai Lama. I have come over here to attend his 90th birthday celebration since we all revere him, we follow him, we respect him, we love him, and we wish a long life to the Dalai Lama. China may say whatever they wish to. But Dalai Lama has love and affection from all corners of the globe. He is an embodiment of peace, prosperity, and international brotherhood,' Jolly stated. Echoing similar sentiments, Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh highlighted the significance of the occasion and the Dalai Lama's enduring legacy. 'Tomorrow is his birthday, and we have come to wish him good luck. To take forward the struggle he has made, he should gain strength. We wish him good luck and honour him on his birthday. This comes after China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday once again emphasised that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be approved by the central government in Beijing. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process must follow traditional methods, including the drawing of lots from a Golden Urn. 'Tibetan Buddhism was born in China and is a religion with Chinese characteristics,' spokesperson Mao Ning said in a news briefing. Mao Ning referenced an 18th-century Qing dynasty selection method, which involves drawing lots from a golden urn to determine the reincarnation of high-ranking Buddhist figures. Meanwhile, Celebrations are underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of the 90th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Dalai Lama's birthday is officially observed on July 6. Congress questions ED's motives in National Herald case, calls probe
New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Defending Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the Enforcement Directorate's money laundering case linked to the National Herald, Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate and Pawan Khera questioned the basis of the ED investigation, calling it a 'strange' case as there has been 'no exchange of money.' Addressing the media on Saturday, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, 'This is such a strange case where there is a charge of money laundering, but there has been no exchange of money in it. Neither has there been any property transfer nor any assets. The Congress party gave the money for its revival as AJL (Associated Journal Limited) was not a simple institution -- it was founded during the freedom movement of the country. We wanted to protect such an institution.' Reiterating the party's stand, Congress leader Pawan Khera argued that the ED was overstepping its jurisdiction by questioning financial decisions made by the party. 'We had raised a question that the ED cannot question why we hadn't sold properties for loan repayment. We gave the loan interest-free as it was meeting the objectives of publishing a newspaper, and if they cannot pay the loan, who is the ED to ask the question?' Khera said. Earlier on Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's counsel told the Rouse Avenue court, which is hearing the National Herald case that Young Indian was created to revive Associated Journal Limited (AJL) and not to earn rent, 'AJL is freedom-fighting legacy, our purpose is to save it, not to earn rent from its properties. It was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai and other leaders before Independence. Motive was its revival, not to earn rent,' the counsel mentioned. Special judge Vishal Gogne is hearing arguments on the cognizance of prosecution complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Senior advocate RS Cheema along with Tarannum Cheema appeared for Rahul Gandhi. Senior advocate Pramod Kumar Dubey also appeared in the matter. The court has listed the matter for hearing on Monday. The court has also sought reply on application moved by Suman Dubey seeking a direction for supply of certain documents including the statement of Motilal Vohra taken by the ED in another related case. At the outset of the hearing, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju also addressed the court regarding a query on the takeover of AJL by Young Indian and the disinvestment of Air India by the Centre. He said disinvestment in Air India was done in a transparent way. 'You can't compare Air India deal with the Young Indian deal,' the ASG submitted. He said AICC gave a loan to loss-making AJL, and no prudent person would do it. 'Rs 90 crore loss to AICC is a wrongful loss. It is a result of conspiracy by respondents,' he said. Raju submitted that AICC should have adopted an auction to recover the debt, and AICC was aware that AJL was a loss-making company. There was no transparency in taking the debt of AJL by Young Indian, he said. In response to Raju's submissions, Cheema asked if it is for the ED to decide what AICC's motive and priority are. 'It is incumbent on the court to take a look of complaint of Dr Subramaniam Swamy while taking cognizance of complaint of ED,' Cheema said. He said Motilal Vohra was questioned by the ED at his home in another case related to AJL. 'That case was filed in 2016 and cognizance was taken. ED waited a long time. Vohra passed away. He had knowledge of the deal. His statement was recorded,' the Senior Advocate said. 'A private complaint filed Dr. Subramaniam Swamy was converted into a schedule offence and ED later registered a money laundering case? One of the few exceptions that was made by ED was picking up a private complaint after years. The question is how will the Court respond to this?' Cheema said. Scheduled offence and FIR or statutory complaint need to be exist for a money laundering case, Cheema said. Cheema said Young Indian (YI) would have no rights on the assets of AJL. The Senior Advocate also submitted despite being a not-for-profit company, Young Indian was not indulging in any charity. He strongly denied the allegations that young Indian was involved in money laundering. Cheema said late leader Motilal Vohra, who was treasurer of AICC, was responsible for management of funds. He said AJL is alive and kicking and digital news operation was started. 'AJL is not dead. It is in control of its properties. Congress Party gave a lone to revive AJL. The loan was not given to earn interest or to get its properties,' he said. 'If AJL makes profits, it will go to the Young Indian, not the individuals. The rent generated from the property is being enjoyed by the respondents, it is totally wrong, ' the Senior Advocate submitted. (ANI)
