'I worked at Boots and this little known perfume may be the scent of summer'
For the perfume fans among us, summer always presents an opportunity to find a new scent. With so many bottles on the market, many of us go for ones that are well known.
However, amongst the Marc Jacobs and Hugo Boss offerings that tend to be bestsellers at this time of year, there are a few alternative options amongst them that are worth giving a go.
One of them is the newly launched Zadig, by Parisian fragrance house, Zadig & Voltaire, a 'floriental woody fragrance for women' that, despite being a new addition to the market, has already earned glowing praise from one perfume fanatic.
Bethan Shufflebotham of the Manchester Evening News, who used to work on the health and beauty chain's perfume counter, spotted this light, creamy coloured perfume on a recent store visit and said she "didn't know whether to shout about it from the rooftops, or keep it a closely guarded secret."
After she couldn't resist spritzing the perfume, which boasts a unique wing-inspired bottle, the former Boots employee shared her full thoughts which can be found just below.
"The result is a warm, smoky and incredibly moreish scent you can't help but keep going back to. It's feminine but powerful and a little edgy, like those cool girls that pull off a leather jacket thrown over a silk slip dress.
"When I look at my perfume collection, it is pretty vanilla heavy, which is perhaps why I was so drawn to Zadig. According to perfume experts on TikTok, fragrances with similar profiles will tend to be housed in a bottle of a similar colour, which is a hack that comes in super handy when shopping fragrances online, or if you don't want to smell every bottle in store to find something you like.
"With that theory in mind, some alternatives may include the likes of YSL Libre, which also contains orange blossom and vanilla. Zadig also says their wing-inspired bottle is symbolic of freedom, with Libre translating to 'free' in French.
" Burberry Goddess would be another great choice, boasting key notes of vanilla and lavender. And coincidentally, Amandine Clerc-Marie was involved in crafting this popular 2023 scent, too.
Despite being new to the market, Zadig is already holding its own, and has gained popularity with fans of Alien, Flowerbomb and Fame. One said: 'I'm usually quite pernickety about sweet fragrances but this was not overpowering at all. In fact I was regularly complimented when wearing it. It's a bit more tart than YSL Black Opium but I quite like that.'
'This is one of the best perfumes I've smelt in a while,' said another. 'It has a gorgeous fragrance and lasts all day. Quite a few people have commented when I wear it, I absolutely love it.'
A third penned: 'Absolutely loved this. Gorgeous bold smell and really did last all day from one squirt. Usually wear Flowerbomb and this is a good rival for similar scent, but this is the longest lasting I've ever found.'
The fragrance is also vegan and made from 89% natural-origin ingredients, plus the bottle is refillable, making it more sustainable than some other bottles available.
However, some shoppers weren't so keen on the wing design. 'I absolutely love the scent of this fragrance. At first it smells quite strong but becomes subtle quite quickly, however I could still smell it on me 5+ hours later. I'm not a big fan of the statement bottle, which is why it's lost a star from me.'
While the scent profile has earned much praise, some wearers (as above) report it lasting five plus hours, others note that it fades more quickly.
Beauty deal of the week
Looking for last minute gift inspiration for dad ahead of Sunday, June 15.
Then don't fret, as we have you covered, as no-one can go wrong with a new bottle of cologne, and we have spotted Versace's The Dreamer for him Eau de Toilette for 67 percent less at Superdrug.
Hailed for being "underrated" and "truly unique", a large 100ml bottle of this fragrance has been dropped from £74 to £24, allowing you to make a huge saving of £50 and get in a thoughtful gift.
Described as "warm" and "fresh", Versace's Dreamer is an aromatic fragrance that, while belonging to the cologne family, is said to boast a variety of notes that make it suitable for both men and women.
The scent opens on vibrant notes of juniper, tarragon, and artemisia, before blending into heart notes of iris, lily and flax flowers to add a touch of softness. It then ends on a comforting base of tobacco blossom and amber, offering a smoky, luxurious finish.
The transparent, clear fragrance itself is housed in an opulent glass bottle that has been embossed with the iconic medusa logo, representing the luxury aesthetic of the iconic fashion house.
Versace's Dreamer EDT has managed to earn glowing reviews and a 4.6 rating from shoppers, with one saying: "Truly unique and dreamy fragrance. It's a great fragrance but it's underrated. Guys you have to try this one, it's great for all year round."
And someone else wrote: "Not to be overlooked. This is a lesser known Versace men's fragrance but oh my it is gorgeous ! Hubby loved it and amazing value for money."
Versace's The Dreamer For Him Eau de Toilette (100ml) can be bought for 67 percent less at Superdrug now.
One shopper who usually wears Fame or Alien said: 'Upon spraying a bit onto a sample stick I was not expecting to be wowed at all. How wrong I was. It smelled amazing.
"Very reminiscent of my beloved long time signature scent of Alien. So I doused myself in the stuff before leaving the store. Went home and straight onto Boots online.
"Decided to order myself the biggest bottle as best value for money. It's also refillable which also scores big brownie points with me. I've worn it once since it arrived and received many compliments on my scent and I've told everyone about 'Zadig''.
Finishing her own review, Bethan added: "I will be honest I'd never heard of the brand or the perfume itself until I happened by it accidentally. I am saving mine for special occasions so as not to overwear it.
"My only niggle is that I don't think the scent lasts all day as I couldn't smell it after a few hours unlike Alien and Fame. So even though it was a perfume as opposed to an EDT I feel they need to work on the longevity of the wear somehow."
Perfume fans looking to try out the little known Zadig & Voltaire - ZADIG Eau de Parfum (90ml) can buy it for £110 from Boots now.

Sunday Brunch guest rushes off set as host asks 'are you leaving us'
Sunday Brunch star Big Zuu was forced to make a quick exit from the Channel 4 programme as he raced to Glastonbury to perform with rapper AJ Tracey The Sunday Brunch set was one guest down midway through the show, as Big Zuu made an early exit to dash for Glastonbury. The rapper, 29, returned to the programme to present his quirky culinary creation: a "lasagne on pizza". Eager to get moving, he breezed through his cooking demonstration, quickly making an exit to catch his ride to the iconic festival. Big Zuu kicked off the show with Jim Moir, Aisling Bea, Nick Helm, Fuse ODG, Damon Hill, and Such Brave Girls duo Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. But as he was mid-preparation of his unique lasagne-pizza fusion, Simon interjected to query: "Are you leaving us after this?", reports the Manchester Evening News. "I have to go yeah, I can't stay," admitted Big Zuu. "I'm going to Glastonbury." With a chuckle, he added: "I've got to go to Glasto and find myself." He shared that he was set to rock the stage with AJ Tracey, planning to head out from the Channel 4 set in his tour bus. Big Zuu revealed: "I'm going to travel three hours for ten minutes [on stage]," while flaunting his all-ready wristband ahead of his 8pm slot. "You've got time," Tim chimed in encouragingly, with a confident Big Zuu responding: "I'll make it." Despite the rush to Glastonbury, recently notching up a goal at SoccerAid, and launching a Sky series with AJ Tracey, Big Zuu claimed during other parts of the show that his schedule was remarkably clear. "This is the first time in my life I'm actually doing nothing, I'm just going to chill," he declared. "I'm going to find myself, it's really good, it's nice to chill, I get to do lots of fun stuff, I like relaxing and just working on me." Later in the programme, Kim Sadler from Such Brave Girls disclosed her notes about the show with the remark: "Zuu bunked off for Glasto," hinting that the star had taken time off prior to the break for the festival.

Sunday Brunch host issues apology to Aisling Bea after 'boring' mum question
Sunday Brunch hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer issued an apology to comedian Aisling Bea after they asked her a 'boring' question about motherhood Sunday Brunch hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy playfully said sorry to comedian Aisling Bea after they quizzed her on her personal life. The Irish comedian made an appearance on the Channel 4 morning show alongside guests like Big Zuu, with Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson from Such Brave Girls. Almost immediately into the show, Tim disclosed a backstage chat with Aisling, prompting a cheeky apology from him. He explained: "Aisling, this morning you came in and I said to you, 'How is it being a mum?' and then Simon said to you, 'Congratulations, I've not seen you since becoming a mum,' and you said, 'Simon, the boring thing and being a mum is that everyone keeps asking about it'." "So I apologise for that," he said with a chuckle: "But how is it being a mum?" reports the Manchester Evening News. Aisling responded with playful repartee: "Thank you for apologising, I'll work on forgiveness but I can't guarantee it." She continued: "I still identify as a child-free, single lady because of the vibe but I do have a baby and a boyfriend." With her signature wit, Aisling commented on "rival show" Saturday Kitchen, saying her little one "couldn't get her head around it" so she likely wasn't watching her mum today. Opening up about motherhood, she added: "I feel like I'm not a mum yet, at the start you're just like dealing with a new person in the house, I think it'll be a while before that feels like I'm a mother." Aisling revealed that she and her partner Jack Freeman became parents for the first time in August last year, after getting celebrities like Paul Rudd and Travis Kelce to announce her pregnancy news months earlier. She took to Instagram to share the birth of her baby, posting a series of photos showing her growing bump, ending with a final snap of her cradling her newborn daughter in hospital. In a playful post, she wrote: "Trip advisor review of Pregnancy One star," and listed a series of "negatives" such as it being "expensive" and leaving her feeling "very unrested". "Not as described online or in pictures. Reminded me of the Glasgow Willie Wonka experience. Towards the end of my stay I was repeatedly kicked in the nuts," she continued. She then went on to list: "UTIs, bleeding, depression, cramps, insomnia, nosebleeds, sinus blockage, migraines, vomiting, being randomly touched by people without asking, bones mushing, organs moving, skin stretching, being told that you'll forget all the pain/that it's a privilege / that it will all be "worth it" in the end, heightened awareness of climate change and worst of all- boredom- all described as « normal » and was repeatedly recommended « a nice bath » as a fix to all of the above." Aisling also shared the "positives", saying she enjoyed the bath at the end and appreciated the help with her bags, adding: "Before checking out, nearby kebab shop man provided free extra chips and quite a flirty wink, which I appreciated. Was given a little gift at check out which is, admittedly, quite cute. " Sunday Brunch airs from 10am on Channel 4.

Gemma Atkinson shares heartbreaking message one year on from devastating loss
Gemma Atkinson has shared a poignant yet uplifting message as she commemorated one year since the painful farewell of her dogs. Followers of Gemma on social media will know how heartbroken she was by the loss of her beloved dogs, Norman and Ollie, who both passed away within six months of each other last year. Announcing Norman's passing last summer, just days before her daughter Mia's fifth birthday, Gemma expressed: "My beautiful boy Norman has passed away." READ MORE - The Queen's steadfast 'antisocial' breakfast habit she refused to change READ MORE - BBC viewers gobsmacked by a bold moment in JADE's Glastonbury performance She added, "My heart is broken," and posted an emotional video with snapshots and footage of him throughout the years with her and Ollie, as well as fiancé Gorka Marquez and their two children, Mia and one year old Thiago. Then, on December 10, Gemma, aged 40, revealed that Ollie had joined Norman, leaving her shattered. In a video filled with memories over the years featuring Ollie and Norman, the Bury-born actress shared with her two million followers: "Sleep well beautiful Ollie..", reports the Manchester Evening News. She continued, "The sadness of losing you both so close together is a lot, but I know you're both somewhere running free in long grass or on a beach chasing the tide carefree, pain-free and happy. That's what I'm taking comfort in right now. I'll remember you for the rest of my life. Norman and Ollie. My two best boys. Reunited." It was this Saturday (June 28) that Gemma took a moment to look back on the 12 months since Norman's death. She turned to Instagram with a touching video that captured the cherished moments she spent with Norman. In an emotional post shared with her 2.1 million followers, she wrote: "A year since we said goodbye to Norman... It's passed by so quickly. "I still get a lot of DMs from people who've recently lost their companion asking how I coped and in all honesty I still a year on have the odd day where it hits me out of nowhere and I miss both Norman and Ollie SO much. I see a man most days walking with a spaniel the spitting image of Ollie and I always smile to myself. "Until you've experienced pet loss it's hard to explain how hard it is. To some they are "just a dog" or "just a pet" and I guess in a way that's what makes us owners so lucky. We know they are so much more than that, because we've experienced the unconditional love and loyalty. "The no judgment regardless of our situation. Those morning stretches and longing looks from them knowing you're their human, and you are the most important loved person every single day of their life. It's the most wonderful feeling you can imagine. I count myself lucky that from age 2 I've had that joy. In Fergie, Norman, Ollie and now Benji." Benji is the new goldendoodle puppy that Gemma and her fiance Gorka Marquez welcomed into their lives last month. She continued: "I know Norm and Ollie played a part in sending him to us. Even from another realm they knew we needed him. Especially Mia. She was struggling and they helped her heal. Benji has helped her heal. "So to those who ask me about losing a pet, I say the pain never truly fades, but I believe it's because they take a small piece of our heart with them - a little memento reminding us that we're their human, and just as we remember and talk about them, they do the same about us." This emotional post sparked an outpouring of love and support. @life_with_hope2023 commented: "Tears are rolling... your words, so true, so beautiful, so poignant. Rest in paradise to all of our soul dogs." @66northgirl replied: "Thank you for that post. Only 6 weeks into the pain of losing my 'furbaby' and still so incredibly raw. Sending love and thoughts to your family." @lucymaygoodwin said: "Never 'just a dog', 'just a cat', 'just a pet'. They are all part of our family and leave a paw print on our hearts for life. Sending you lots of love today." @wrightiesan10 wrote: "What an amazing video. So beautiful. Hope Norman is having the best time at rainbow bridge." @tracyfrostlewis posted: "Oh boy. So beautifully written and so very true. Tears here. Thank you." @tracy. grayson added: "Oh Gemma. This got me. So well take a bit of our hearts."
