Cannes Is Done with Huge Cruise Ships as It Joins the Overtourism Backlash
The home of the world's premier film festival is joining a growing global backlash against overtourism, which recently saw uproar over Jeff Bezos' and Lauren Sanchez' Venice wedding this weekend, water-gun protests in Spain and a surprise strike at the Louvre Museum.
'Less numerous, less big, less polluting and more esthetic' — that's the aim of Cannes city councilors who voted Friday to introduce new limits on cruise ships in its ports. The aim is to ban all ships carrying more than 1,300 people by 2030, city hall said in a statement.
Starting next year, a maximum of 6,000 cruise passengers will be allowed to disembark per day, and the number of ships carrying more than 5,000 passengers will be cut by 48% in 2026. Larger ships will be expected to transfer passengers to smaller boats to enter Cannes.
France, which drew in some 100 million visitors last year, more than any other European country and more than the country's population, is on the front line of efforts to balance economic benefits of tourism with environmental concerns while managing ever-growing crowds.
'Cannes has become a major cruise ship destination, with real economic benefits. It's not about banning cruise ships, but about regulating, organizing, setting guidelines for their navigation,' Mayor David Lisnard said in a statement.
Cruise operators have called such restrictions damaging for destinations and for passengers.
Two cruise ships were scheduled to dock in Cannes on Sunday, each bigger than the upcoming 1,300-passenger limit and with a combined capacity of more than 7,000 people. Their owners did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the new restrictions.
The nearby Mediterranean city of Nice announced limits on cruise ships earlier this year, as have some other European cities.

BRUSSELS: China's top diplomat warned his EU counterpart against 'confrontation,' his foreign ministry said Thursday, after she urged Beijing to stop undermining Europe's security. Meeting Kaja Kallas in Brussels on Wednesday, Wang Yi said China and the European Union 'should not be regarded as opponents because of differences, nor should they seek confrontation because of disagreements,' according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement. Europe is 'facing various challenges,' Wang said, but stressed that none were caused by China 'in the past, present or future.' Ahead of their meeting, Kallas, the EU's foreign affairs chief, said China was 'not our adversary, but on security our relationship is under increasing strain.' She said Chinese firms were 'Moscow's lifeline to sustain its war against Ukraine' and accused Beijing of carrying out cyberattacks, democratic interference and unfair trade practices that 'harm European security and jobs.' China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in Russia's more than three-year war with Ukraine. But Western governments say Beijing has given Moscow crucial economic and diplomatic support. 'Enabling war in Europe while seeking closer ties with Europe is a contradiction Beijing must address,' Kallas added on Wednesday. Wang, meanwhile, sought to cast Beijing as a steady counterweight against superpower rival Washington, which has threatened to slap sweeping tariffs on imports from European nations. 'The path taken by the United States should not be used as a reflection of China,' he said. 'China is not the United States.' Beijing's foreign ministry also said the two sides had discussed Ukraine, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and the Iran nuclear issue. Beijing and Brussels should treat one another with 'respect,' Wang said, adding that Europe should pursue a more 'active and pragmatic' China policy. The Chinese diplomat also met European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and his Belgian counterpart Maxime Prevot on Wednesday. China and the EU should 'uphold multilateralism and free trade... and work together to address global challenges such as climate change,' Wang told von der Leyen. Wang will next travel to Germany, where he will hold talks with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on diplomacy and security. And in France, Wang will meet minister for Europe and foreign affairs Jean-Noel Barrot, who visited China in March. The visits come about three weeks ahead of a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the EU's top officials in Beijing.

Poland completes negotiations to buy South Korean K2 tanks: Reports
Poland has completed negotiations with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem to receive a second batch of K2 tanks and plans to sign a contract, South Korea's defense procurement agency said on Wednesday. The specific size of the contract will be disclosed later, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a statement. On Thursday, Hyundai Rotem said in a regulatory filing the Polish arms procurement agency has confirmed the contract was worth $6.5 billion. It said further details of the deal would be announced in a later filing. The Yonhap News Agency has said the deal was to supply 180 tanks. In 2022, Poland and Hyundai Rotem agreed to a supply deal for the first batch, or 180 K2 tanks. While the first contract focused on Korean-made vehicles that could be quickly supplied as Poland moved swiftly to boost its military amid Russia's war in neighboring Ukraine, the second batch is expected to grant the Korean arms maker a more permanent foothold in Europe. DAPA said a production facility in Poland would be established, with a large number of K2 tanks to be assembled locally through cooperation between Hyundai Rotem and Polish defense companies.
