Delhi University's move to allow online credits sparks faculty uproar
New Delhi (India), July 4 (ANI): Delhi University is set to allow undergraduate and postgraduate students to earn academic credits through online platforms like SWAYAM starting from the 2025-26 academic session, a move that has triggered sharp backlash from faculty.
An agenda in this regard will be presented in the academic council meeting on Saturday.
According to the supplementary agenda, 'In the case of UG programmes, students be provided flexibility to earn up to 5 per cent of the total credits through SWAYAM and MOOCs Platform... not exceeding 8 credits in the entire duration of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme.' For PG students, the limit is 'a maximum of 4 credits' over the full course duration.
The credits can be earned across a wide range of categories -- 'DSC, GE, SEC, VAC, AEC' -- as per the agenda.
While the proposal cites UGC's 2021 regulations (which allow institutions to offer up to 40% of a programme online per semester), teachers' bodies say this is the beginning of a deeper structural shift that could sideline faculty entirely.
The Academic for Action and Development Teachers' Association (AADTA) has called the move a 'backstab' and a 'blueprint for teacherless universities.'
'This is not digitalisation. This is dehumanisation,' AADTA said. 'Courses taught in classrooms for decades will now be shifted online. Teachers will be pushed out--silenced by screens, replaced by portals.'
AADTA also criticised the administration for ignoring recruitment on EWS-reserved faculty posts and for instructing colleges not to appoint guest lecturers.
'No workload = No teachers,' AADTA said. 'This is not policy. It is digital displacement.'
The association has demanded an immediate freeze on SWAYAM/MOOCs-based credit transfers, urgent recruitment to vacant posts, and a clear stand that online education remains supplementary, not primary. (ANI)

The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. The minister further took a veiled attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who reunited on Saturday at a joint rally for the cause of Marathi people, saying that the state is watching how some leaders are "enjoying other Hindus being beaten up". Shelar later asserted that the BJP would defend the dignity of Marathi people, and would stand by non-Marathi residents and ensure their protection. 'Marathi is not a political issue for us," he said. Referring to speeches made at the joint rally of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, he said, 'As far as yesterday's program is concerned, one brother's speech is incomplete, and the other's is irrelevant. In another incident, five MNS workers were arrested for vandalising the office of Mumbai-based share market investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli after he declared he would not speak Marathi and dared the party chief Raj Thackeray. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier warned of strict legal action against those engaging in violence in the name of language. The row over speaking Marathi is escalating into a major political flashpoint ahead of the civic polls. The Hindi language row erupted after the BJP-led Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR) making the learning of the language compulsory in primary schools. Amid the growing backlash from MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), the government amended the GR to make Hindi the "generally" third language before finally withdrawing both orders on June 29. The issue of Marathi identity and the "imposition" of Hindi is believed to be a catalyst for reuniting Uddhav and Raj Thackeray after almost 20 years on Saturday at a joint "victory" rally to celebrate the government's decision to scrap the GRs under the three-language policy. With elections to the high-profile Mumbai civic body and other municipal corporations approaching, the BJP waded into the language row, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserting that those resorting to violence over the Hindi language will face legal action. Her comments were made against the backdrop of the controversy over Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers assaulting a shopkeeper and even allegedly attempting to vandalise a businessman's office for not speaking Marathi or refusing to learn the language. 'Having pride in the Marathi language is not wrong, but if someone engages in hooliganism in the name of language, we will not tolerate it,' Fadnavis told reporters. "If anyone resorts to violence based on language, it will not be tolerated." He expressed surprise at people easily accepting English and creating a fuss over Hindi. Fadnavis reiterated that strict action will be taken against those who take the law into their own hands. Kangana in Himachal BJP MP Kangana Ranaut visited the cloudburst-affected areas of her constituency, Mandi, on Sunday, to take stock of the ongoing relief efforts and interact with the local residents. She said that the Centre immediately sent forces to the region to help with the relief operation. "Even though the Prime Minister is on a foreign visit, but he is informed of what is happening here, and the central government has swung into action. As an MP, it is my job to bring in funds and convey the ground reality to the government," she told news agency ANI. As many as 14 people have died and 31 others remain missing as flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides wreaked havoc in Mandi earlier this week. Ranaut also visited the Thunag subdivision in Mandi as a massive trail of destruction was left behind by heavy rainfall across Himachal. The most affected areas in the state are the Thunag subdivision, Karsog Gohar subdivision and Dharampur subdivision, and DC Mandi.
