
Why Gen Z fears phones
The phone is no longer just the phone. It's becoming the damn phone.
This, because the massive amount of spam that South Africans are being subjected to has created substantial anxiety, particularly amongst Gen Zs. But it doesn't exclude the rest of us.
Telephobia, or the fear and concomitant anxiety associated with speaking on the phone, has become a recognised condition and a sign of modern times.
While the condition was first discussed in psychological circles in the 1990s, it has gained momentum recently with global search spikes for the term, according to netnographer and cultural trends analyst Carmen Murray, recorded in June 2023, July 2024, and March 2025.
Murray said that the pandemic played a major role in reshaping how people communicate.
'During lockdown, people became used to messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Teams and Slack. Direct phone calls started to feel disruptive and often unwanted,' she said. It's now embedded in popular culture.
Phone call anxiety is real
Phone call anxiety is not limited to inconvenience.
According to Murray, increased robocalls, scam attempts using AI-generated voices and unlabelled call centre numbers add to this.
In South Africa, the trend is compounded by what Murray called Hassle Culture, where frequent unsolicited calls and aggressive marketing have made consumers wary.
'There's reputational risk now when you call someone. Trust in the phone as a communication tool is eroding.'
And all this has contributed to widespread distrust.
'Many companies now call from mobile numbers too, which are often the same format scammers use,' she said.

Outside of personal preferences, South African consumers report high volumes of unsolicited calls.
Murray said that there isn't a day that goes by when she isn't hassled several times by pretend-familiar salespeople trying to push their wares.
'They come in waves, and if you don't answer the first time, the robot just keeps calling you until you give in,' she said. 'This, despite POPIA, despite strict regulations, they just do whatever they want with no consideration to the consequences or impact on someone else's day.'
Spam calls are shortsighted
Psychologist and medical doctor Dr Jonathan Redelinghuys said that hammering consumers with calls is short-sighted.
'The aversion that an individual can develop towards a certain product or brand can become more damaging to a business than the actual call was worth,' he said.
Murray said that the result is that people have stopped answering altogether. That is, unless they know the person on the other end of the line.
Dr Redelinghuys said telephobia presents as a form of social anxiety.
'Not seeing someone's face or body language during a call creates uncertainty. People fear being misunderstood, judged by their tone, or freezing mid-conversation,' he said.
He agreed that telephobia may be fuelled by past experiences.
'Some people associate phone calls with bad news. Others are self-conscious about their voice or feel they need a script to handle live interactions. Others just feel it spoils their day and gets their blood boiling when it is the umpteenth sales call in a day.'

Text is best
This avoidance of Alexander Bell's invention is increasingly visible in younger workers, said Murray.
A 2024 Uswitch survey found that 61% of 18 to 34-year-olds prefer texting or WhatsApps to phone calls, and 23% of them never answer unknown numbers.
In the UK, coaching sessions have been introduced to help students overcome phone anxiety.
'They've grown up using asynchronous communication,' said Murray, 'where responses can be thought through and edited. A phone call does not allow that level of control,' she said.
The impact is also being felt in the workplace. Dr Redelinghuys said that communication expectations are changing, but not everyone's on the same page.
'In some environments, avoiding calls can affect job interviews, client meetings, or collaborative work. It's important to recognise that these habits don't mean someone is unprofessional. It could just be that their communication style is different.'
Murray added that in the absence of POPIA enforcement against harassment, consumers are beginning to automate their own defences.
'Apps that block spam or screen unknown numbers are now standard. Increasingly, people are setting their phones to silent by default and choosing to engage on their own terms. If at all.'
She said that as businesses automate client interactions, consumers will follow suit.
'Agentic AI will allow users to deploy personal assistants to handle calls, negotiate services, and interact with companies directly.'
Dr Redelinghuys said it is important for businesses and institutions to adapt.
'Phone calls are still useful in many cases, but the way people use them is changing. Understanding these behaviours is essential if we want to maintain clear communication across generations.'

Digital gossip: When WhatsApp groups become cyber-risk zones
93% of African respondents use WhatsApp for work communications, surpassing email and Microsoft Teams. Despite their popularity among employees, informal messaging platforms pose significant risks to organisations' cybersecurity. This is according to Anna Collard, senior vice president of Content Strategy and Evangelist at KnowBe4 Africa. WhatsApp According to the 2025 KnowBe4 Africa Annual Cybersecurity survey, 93% of African respondents use WhatsApp for work communications, surpassing email and Microsoft Teams. 'For many organisations, platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram have become integral to workplace communication. Ease of use is what makes them so popular,' explains Collard. 'Particularly on the continent, many people prefer WhatsApp because it's fast, familiar and frictionless. These apps are already on our phones and embedded in our daily routines.' Convenience at cost Collard says while it feels natural to ping a colleague on WhatsApp, especially if you're trying to get a quick answer, convenience often comes at the cost of control and compliance. In the US, a top-secret military attack on Yemen was leaked on the messaging platform Signal earlier this year, with the plan inadvertently shared with a newspaper editor and other civilians, including the Defence Secretary's wife and brother. 'There are multiple layers of risk,' states Collard. 'It's important to remember that WhatsApp wasn't built for internal corporate use, but as a consumer tool. Because of that, it doesn't have the same business-level and privacy controls embedded in it that an enterprise communication tool, such as Microsoft Teams or Slack, would have.' ALSO READ: South Africa remains a global hotspot for data breaches Data leakage Collard explains that the biggest risk for organisations is data leakage. 'Accidental or intentional sharing of confidential information, such as client details, financial figures, internal strategies or login credentials, on informal groups can have disastrous consequences. 'Informal platforms lack the audit trails necessary for compliance with regulations, particularly in industries like finance with strict data-handling requirements,' she said. Identity theft She said phishing and identity theft are also threats. 'Attackers love platforms where identity verification is weak,' she says, adding that at least 10 people in her personal network have reported being victims of WhatsApp impersonation and takeover scams. 'Once the scammer gains access to the account, in many cases via SIM swaps, the real user is locked out, and they have access to all their previous communications, contacts and files,' she comments. 'They then impersonate the victim to deceive their contacts, often asking for money or even more personal information.' ' Collard said that for organisations wanting to mitigate these risks, it's important to set up a clear communications strategy. 'First, provide secure alternatives. Don't just tell people what not to use. Make sure that tools like Teams or Slack are easy to access and clearly endorsed.' Collard said it is also vital to educate employees on why secure communication matters. 'This training should include digital mindfulness principles, such as to pause before sending, think about what you're sharing and with whom, and be alert to emotional triggers like urgency or fear, as these are common tactics in social engineering attacks.' Collard said by introducing approved communication tools, organisations can benefit from additional security features, such as audit logs, data protection, access control and integration with other business tools. 'Using approved platforms helps maintain healthy boundaries, so work doesn't creep into every corner of your personal life. It's about digital wellbeing as much as it is about cybersecurity.' Collard maintains that while informal messaging offers convenience, its unchecked use introduces significant cyber risks, saying organisations must move beyond simply acknowledging the problem and proactively implement clear policies, provide secure alternatives, and empower employees with the digital mindfulness needed to navigate these cyber-risk zones safely. How new regulations will reshape what you watch and listen to
South Africa's media landscape is is expected to changed due to new regulations. Image: IOL South Africans can expect a change in their media consumption habits, as the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) proposes to overhaul the nation's outdated media regulatory framework. The newly published Draft White Paper on Audio and Audiovisual Media Services and Online Safety signals a shift from regulations designed for the "analogue broadcasting era" to one that looks at global streaming platforms, user-generated content, and "non-linear media consumption". According to the department, this update is important as the existing Electronic Communications Act (ECA) is "no longer fit for purpose" in the digital age. Why the old rules don't work anymore For decades, South Africa's media landscape was all about the principle of "scarcity rationale". Simply put, radio frequency spectrum was a limited resource, so this meant strict regulation of broadcasters. This framework, established by legislation like the Independent Broadcasting Authority Act (IBA Act) and continued in the Electronic Communications Act (ECA), focused on "broadcasting" as a unidirectional, one-to-many service delivered over traditional networks. Under the old rules, services like Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) offered on managed networks were considered broadcasting services requiring a licence. What complicated matters was that the TV programming and Video-on-Demand (VOD) services offered over the public internet fell outside the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa's (ICASA) jurisdiction and did not require a licence. Authorities noticed this created a regulatory imbalance, as traditional broadcasters faced "considerable obligations" for local content and stringent advertising rules, while new online players such as Netflix largely operated without these requirements. It seeks to "balance media freedom with public interest" and ensure regulatory fairness across all platforms. So how will this directly impact what you watch and listen to? The new framework will abandon the narrow, outdated definitions and will make up of three broad categories: traditional broadcasting services, on-demand content services (OCS) (think Netflix and BritBox), and video-sharing platform services (VSPs) (like YouTube and TikTok). What this means for South Africans is that for the first time, global streaming platforms and social media video platforms will be formally acknowledged and potentially regulated in South Africa. The policy aims for a "technology-neutral approach," meaning similar services will be regulated similarly, regardless of how they are delivered. A core focus is enhanced online safety and protection, especially for children. The White Paper aims to "strengthen protection against digital harms". For services like YouTube and TikTok and Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), you can expect: Mechanisms to report harmful content (e.g., incitement to violence or hatred, terrorist content). Age verification systems for content that "may impair the physical, mental, or moral development of minors". Parental control systems to help adults manage what children see. A prohibition on advertising in content specifically provided for children. Measures to combat "mis- or disinformation". This means a safer online environment, particularly for younger viewers, and a clearer route to flag inappropriate content. There will most likely be more South African content on streaming platforms . Currently, traditional broadcasters have "considerable obligations" for local content, while OTTs (Over-The-Top services) have none. The policy indicates that "South African content obligations may also apply to On-demand Content Services (OCS)" in the future. What this suggests is that it could lead to a significant increase in local films, series, and music available on streaming services. Another key change is the implementation of a new online ombudsman for complaints. The White Paper proposes to "establish an ombudsman for online safety and media regulation". This will aim to provide an "easily identifiable and accessible route to resolution" for complaints that don't have a clear 'complaint box', so to speak, so there will be a dedicated avenue for dispute resolution, instead of just contacting a general helpline. The listing of "national sporting events which are in the public interest" will be "extended to include the broadcasting of these in the broader AAVMS market". Significant national events, like presidential inaugurations or state funerals, and potentially major sporting events, could become more widely accessible across various platforms, rather than being confined to traditional broadcasters who hold exclusive retransmission rights. Advertising rules would also see change. Currently, there's a "regulatory imbalance" where online advertisers have more leeway than those on traditional radio or television. The policy seeks to harmonise rules for misleading and comparative advertising, and address political advertising and disinformation across all platforms. This could lead to more consistent and transparent advertising practices across all media you consume. What is next? The department has outlined a three-stage implementation plan, spanning up to 24 months, to allow for careful consideration, research, and consultation. This phased approach aims to build consensus and ensure that the new framework effectively benefits South African citizens, businesses, and the creative industries. This overhaul will take time. Compare the process to upgrading a city's entire water supply system. While the old pipes (in this case, analogue broadcasting) served their purpose, they can't handle the demands of modern consumption (the streaming and user-generated content needs). The new plan involves not only laying new, larger pipes (technology-neutral regulation) but also installing new filtration systems (the proposed online safety and ombudsman), ensuring local water sources are prioritised (local content), and connecting every home, regardless of location, to clean, accessible water (universal access).
