Five Winners, Three Losers From Aggressive MLB Trade Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The MLB trade deadline did not disappoint and ensured an entertaining finish over the final two months of the season. Several contenders around the league made noticeable improvements while other teams in the race failed to keep pace with the competition. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 21: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 21, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 21: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 21, 2025 in Arlington, are five winners and three losers from theMLB trade deadline. WINNERS San Diego Padres A.J. Preller strikes again. Nobody worked like San Diego on Thursday. The Padres headlined the day with Mason Miller coming over from the Athletics. The team also added to the lineup with Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles. The Padres bolstered their chances of catching the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. New York Yankees The Yankees have a truly formidable bullpen. Aaron Boone should have great confidence in turning the game over to the newly-acquired pair of arms in Camilo Doval and David Bednar in addition to Luke Weaver and Devin Williams. New York Mets The New York teams both went to work in the bullpen. The Mets gave closer Edwin Diaz some help in leverage spots with the additions of Trevor Rogers and Ryan Helsley. The Mets also addressed an outfield need with a deal to get Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles. Philadelphia Phillies The race for the NL East between the Mets and Phillies is a prime storyline for the rest of the season. Harrison Bader is an on-the-margins upgrade in the outfield but getting a true stopper in closer Jhoan Duran makes a massive difference. The Phillies have the formula that wins in October: hitters that put the ball out of the ballpark, multiple frontline starting pitchers and an elite reliever. Seattle Mariners The Mariners are incredibly well-rounded, though they've lacked bats in recent years that continued their playoff woes. Cal Raleigh is on a historic tear at the plate to help the offense, but the move to reunite with slugger Eugenio Suarez after his season-long surge with the Arizona Diamondbacks could be the X-factor in the race for the AL West. LOSERS Boston Red SoxSteven Matz and Dustin May are arms that can help in the postseason if Boston even gets there. The bottom line is the Red Sox did not do enough (again). They needed another starter like Joe Ryan or even Merrill Kelly. They failed. The Red Sox neglected to address first base, which keeps the pressure on the platoon of Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez to stay on pace with overperforming offensive productions. Milwaukee Brewers The Brewers are tied for the most wins in baseball and only added catcher Danny Jansen two days before the deadline. Chicago Cubs The Cubs needed to be decisive to boost their chances at a division title over the Brewers. They did make additions in Willi Castro, Andrew Kittredge, Taylor Rogers and Michael Soroka. Mets listed as trade deadline winner after several blockbuster moves
The New York Mets enter the month of August leading the National League East by a half-game over the Philadelphia Phillies. They made several key moves at the trade deadline to boost their chances of a postseason run. The Mets were busy in upgrading their bullpen, landing Tyler Rogers, Ryan Helsley and Gregory Soto. They also acquired Cedric Mullins to boost their outfield. The rest of the season looks promising for New York as they try to maintain their lead in the NL East over the Phillies. They'll hope for a deeper run after their NLCS loss last October. Will Leitch of listed six winners of the trade deadline, and the Mets were among them. "The Mets, for all their talent and all that payroll, had clear holes: The bullpen, center field, the back of the rotation. They didn't help out the rotation much, but they took care of the other two quite nicely," Leitch wrote. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp The Mets were certainly very busy at the deadline this year. Their biggest moves were the ones they made to beef up the bullpen. They now have three high-leverage arms that can serve in the closer's role if need be and also have a strong set up option in Soto. They certainly have built a roster capable of winning a World Series title. Mullins should help them out in center field as well. The NL East will be a tight race down the stretch. It will certainly be interesting to see if the Mets can pull away from the rest of the pack in the division and potentially even secure home field advantage through the playoffs. More MLB:

NY Giants Rookie Leaves Practice With Mysterious Setback
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Lately, the New York Giants have been taking it easy with their rookie running back, Cam Skattebo. Earlier this week, the team revealed that Skattebo is on a "participation plan," according to reports. Giants head coach Brian Daboll has not disclosed the primary reason behind Skattebo's plan. On Friday, it was a positive sign to see Skattebo back in the mix for the Giants. However, he ended up leaving the field early with a mysterious setback, roughly 30 minutes after he was spotted in action. The rookie running back was joined by the tight end Thomas Fidone. Both players have joined the Giants in the 2025 NFL Draft class. Cam Skattebo and Thomas Fidone have each left practice here at Giants camp and gone inside with the training staff — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) August 1, 2025 Skattebo landed with the organization as their 105th overall selection in the fourth round. Fidone joined the team as their seventh-round selection out of Nebraska. This summer, Skattebo has been making a lot of noise out of the Giants' backfield. Since New York could utilize a committee approach this year, there is a real opportunity for Skattebo to have a day-one impact, and he seems to be taking total advantage of it. Cam Skattebo at Giants Pracitce. Cam Skattebo at Giants the Giants' first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart had some notable praise for his running back. "He's been elite out there," Dart said on 'Up & Adams' following practice on Tuesday. "I knew coming into it, when you watch the Texas game, he caught the fade against a really good safety against Texas. He kind of was able to shield him off and catch that over his outside shoulder, so that was already super impressive from what I saw." Over the past four seasons, Skattebo worked his way up the college ranks. He started his NCAA run at Sacramento State in 2021. After playing there for two seasons, Skattebo transferred to Arizona State in 2023. As a junior, Skattebo took on 164 carries for 783 yards. He totaled nine touchdowns on the ground and picked up another one in the air. During his senior season, Skattebo appeared in 13 games. He took on a career-high 293 carries and produced 1,711 yards. Skattebo reached the endzone 24 times throughout the year, with 21 of those scores coming in the ground game. He caught 45 passes for 605 yards. It's unclear if Skattebo's early exit will keep him off the field for an extended period. It will be a situation to keep an eye on as the Giants' training camp continues.
