According to Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga provincial Hawks, the suspect was discovered selling the owls at a local shopping complex for R1,000 each.
The brazen act of illegal wildlife trade prompted swift action from the Hawks, following a tip-off from the Parks Board officials. A joint operation ensued, leading to the suspect being caught in the act, with no necessary permits to sell the protected species.
'The vehicle used to transport the wildlife, a Nissan light delivery vehicle, was seized in the operation,' Nkosi confirmed.
The arrested individual is set to appear before the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. He faces serious charges under the Mpumalanga Nature Conservation Act, specifically regarding the keeping and conveyance of live game.
Brigadier Danie Hall, the acting provincial head of the Hawks, welcomed the arrest, emphasising the importance of wildlife to South Africa's cultural and natural heritage.
'Wildlife is part of South Africa's heritage, which must be protected,' Hall asserted.
He encouraged local communities to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal sale of wildlife, stressing, "When we take care of our wildlife, we safeguard our heritage for future generations."
This recent incident is part of a broader trend in South Africa, where law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to combat wildlife trafficking. J
Last year, another significant case was reported where a 59-year-old man, Neo Tongwane, lost his Mercedes-Benz after being convicted of attempting to sell a pangolin.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit secured a final forfeiture order for the vehicle, valued at R150,000, highlighting the legal repercussions faced by those involved in illicit wildlife trade.
The fight against wildlife crime is critical for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring that future generations inherit a naturally rich environment.
As authorities increase their vigilance, the hope is that such actions will serve both as a deterrent to would-be traffickers and a rallying call for public involvement in safeguarding South Africa's unique wildlife.

It's ANC business as usual for Senzo Mchunu, despite being put on special leave
As South Africa grapples with explosive allegations of criminal syndicates and political meddling in the SAPS, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is yet to face any accountability from the ANC. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will continue attending parliamentary meetings and doing party work despite being placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa. As an ordinary MP, Mchunu will continue to enjoy several benefits, including a monthly salary of about R100,000 and free flights. On Tuesday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that Mchunu remained an ordinary MP and would continue executing his duties as a senior member of the ANC. He is a member of various structures in the party, including the National Executive Committee (NEC), the party's highest decision-making body in between conferences, and the National Working Committee (NWC). Mchunu did not attend the party's most recent NWC meeting on Monday, 14 June. Mbalula said it dealt with crucial issues, but Mchunu's was not among them. 'Comrade Senzo is a member of the NWC. He's a member of the NEC. There's no curtailment on those roads. We, in fact, expected him to attend the meeting yesterday, and he gave me an apology, and I told him that I need to sit down with him, that this absence of leave, we are not affected by it as the ANC. 'His absence of leave is in relation to his point of deployment. So we will straighten up issues. He will come to meetings. He must execute his task as a leader of the ANC,' said Mbalula. Allegations of serious misconduct Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on immediate leave of absence after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged serious misconduct on the part of Mchunu, including disbanding a specialised task team investigating political killings. Regarding media reports that Mchunu had been summoned to appear before the ANC's Integrity Commission, which deals with offences and conduct that tarnish the image or integrity of the party, Mbalula said this was 'disinformation' as Mchunu had yet to appear. 'There has not been any decision arrived at on this matter. Until comrades appear before the Integrity Commission, as and when they appear, the Integrity Commission will deal with the matters.' The commission, led by veteran anti-apartheid activist the Rev Frank Chikane, has been criticised for being toothless as it only makes recommendations on how disciplinary matters should be handled, while the final say lies with the NEC. Mkhwanazi made astounding accusations about fellow police officers and other state officials, including that: A high-level criminal syndicate in South Africa extends into the South African Police Service (SAPS), the police ministry, Parliament, official prison structures, the judiciary and other law-enforcing authorities; A drug cartel headquartered in Gauteng controls that syndicate; At the end of last year, Mchunu issued a directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team to shield politically connected members of a criminal syndicate from prosecution; and Mchunu was in cahoots with organised crime accused Vusi 'Cat' Matlala. Mchunu denied the accusations. Commission of inquiry On Sunday, Ramaphosa announced the creation of a judicial commission of inquiry into Mkhwanazi's allegations. While its terms of reference have not yet been made public, he said it would investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates. The ANC rallied behind the establishment of the commission, saying it was a sustainable path for rebuilding public institutions. Mbalula said Ramaphosa's 'approach is not driven by the need for applause but by the imperative of transformation and accountability within the bounds of legality. 'The African National Congress stands resolute in defence of constitutional governance. We reaffirm our support for the commission of inquiry, for the president's leadership and for all lawful and transparent processes aimed at restoring the integrity of the state. In the end, the strength of our democracy will be judged not by the absence of a crisis but by how we respond to it.' The NEC was due to meet this coming weekend to discuss a range of issues, including the fragile Government of National Unity, preparations for the party's national general council, and the SA Communist Party contesting elections independently. However, Mbalula said the meeting had been postponed. In the meantime, the NWC will engage with party regions in the Western Cape on Saturday, followed by a meeting with the provincial executive on Sunday. DM

Gigaba's ex-wife on leaked sex video: ‘We were blackmailed for almost six months'
Gigaba attempted to halt the airing of the episode by taking the matter to the Johannesburg High Court; however, the court dismissed the application. Norma Mngoma's episode on Untied has finally been aired after Malusi Gigaba tried to halt it. Picture: Supplied The ex-wife of Malusi Gigaba, Norma Mngoma, has given insight into the 2018 leaked video of the politician's private sex video 'We were blackmailed, I think [for] almost six months. They were demanding like money, I think it started from a million,' said Mngoma in the latest episode of Untied on Showmax. Mngoma shared how the figure decreased from the initial one million to approximately R800,000. 'He was negotiating with some comrades about it. But for me, I didn't know what was this video until the person called me because he [Gigaba] didn't tell me that time,' she said. She alleged that the person blackmailing them had first blackmailed her over the video, prompting her to speak to Gigaba about it. 'He acted like it's our video, but we've never done a video [sex tape] together. And all along, he was acting like [it was] a video of us. He knew very well that it was a video of himself alone. So he lied until the day the video was leaked,' she said. Mngoma said she felt sorry for Gigaba when she found out that he was trending on a pornographic website. 'I knew one day this obsession of him and the nudes…so he will use those pictures, he will put them there in his iPad, and then he will open the porn while he is sitting there doing his work.' ALSO READ: Malusi Gigaba's attempt to halt broadcast of ex-wife's explosive episode on 'Untied' fails Norma Mngoma speaks Mngoma features on the fourth episode of Untied, a talk show series that unpacks the complex world of divorce through the stories of famous women who have lived it. Untied is hosted by Relebogile Mabotja. Gigaba attempted to halt the airing of the episode by taking the matter to the Johannesburg High Court; however, the court dismissed the matter last week, allowing Showmax to broadcast it. In the episode, Mngoma reflects on their relationship, detailing how it began and how it eventually came to an end. The 50-year-old Mngoma said she first met Gigaba at an event, where the politician sent one of his bodyguards to ask for her number. 'I was like, why? He must come here. He must ask [for] my number himself because for me, if you want something you must go get it yourself. And then he came, I gave him the number,' she said. The IT specialist said she was attracted to Gigaba's dark skin tone, his attire in a suit, and that he spoke isiZulu. She stated that she wasn't aware that Gigaba was a public figure. Mngoma said that when they started dating, she received messages from Gigaba's wife at the time, who was separated from the politician as they were going through a divorce. She also said she received a slew of messages from other girls on social media, telling her about Gigaba's alleged true nature. 'He was like, 'No, they're jealous'. I felt like that as well, I felt like they are jealous,' said Mngoma, chuckling. ALSO READ: Malusi Gigaba blocks screening of ex-wife's tell-all Showmax interview Marriage In 2014, after Gigaba's marriage to his ex-wife was finalised, the ANC member and Mngoma tied the knot. Mngoma said the wedding, held at the Durban Botanic Gardens, cost about R6 million to R7 million. She said the wedding and marriage didn't stop Gigaba's alleged mistresses from hassling her. According to Mngoma, it reached a point where Gigaba was allegedly blackmailed by some of the women. 'Others, they wanted him to cancel the wedding. 'Then I'm gonna tell your wife this and that,' it was just a lot. He made me believe that these things were not true and not existing.' Mngoma alleges that during this time, Gigaba was more focused on keeping a 'clean' public image of the couple. 'In the beginning, he never paid so much attention to fixing things in the house. He was more of, how the public sees him…and then he's posting me,' she shared. ALSO READ: 'The commission has nothing do with our divorce' – Norma Mngoma 'The therapist is DA' After years of being contacted by Gigaba's alleged girlfriends, Mngoma said she took the initiative to do her investigation about the politician's alleged infidelity. 'I started checking his phone because when someone sent me a message, I wouldn't go to him like I used to before,' she said. To put her at ease, Mngoma said the member of parliament would recommend therapy. 'And how this therapy will happen, maybe he will attend it two or three times. So we will go, and when we are there at the therapy, he's acting like it's his weakness, he doesn't know how it happens. The third time he doesn't wanna go; he says 'no', the therapist is personal,' said Mngoma. Mngoma alleges that Gigaba would make up excuses not to attend therapy sessions he initiated. She recalled that at one point, Gigaba accused a therapist, who happens to be white, of being racist. 'Or sometimes he will say 'no, the therapist is DA [Democratic Alliance]'. He used to have a reason why he's not continuing, and I will find another one,' Mngoma explained. 'He was more focused on fixing the [public] image…us, the Gigabytes. And then he's posting me writing long captions, and people are clapping for him, how much he loves so loud.' Mngoma said she didn't stay with Gigaba because she wanted his money. 'When he met me, I had my own cars, I had my big house — I had a standalone in Bryanston.' 'I wanted our marriage to work.' The pair has two sons. PAGAD Fugitive, captured after 8 years as police seize 23 illegal firearms in Western Cape
PAGAD fugitive Faizel Felix has been on the run for an illegal firearm case for the past eight years. Image: HAWKS As the Western Cape hailed the confiscation of 23 firearms amid gang violence including 13 in Mitchells Plain, PAGAD fugitive Faizel Felix who evaded authorities for years has been apprehended. Felix is no stranger to the courts, after he also made headlines in 2001, when he was accused of being behind a motorbike bomb explosion in front of the Wynberg Magistrates' Court but could never be prosecuted or linked because there were no state witnesses left to testify against him. The efforts behind his successful arrest follows the work done by the Hawks Crimes Against the State (CATs) team's efforts. Felix made an appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates' Court on Monday, eight years after he evaded the long alarm of the law. His case comes hours after, MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais confirmed that 23 firearms were confiscated, 13 of which were found in Mitchell's Plain. According to Fight Against Crime SA's (FACSA) database, 52 shooting incidents were reported in the WC between 11 and 13 July, with 13 people shot, seven fatalities and nearly 32 affected areas, with hotspots such as Elsies River, Tafelsig, Bishop Lavis and others. Next Stay Close ✕ The Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Zinzi Hani said Felix had evaded court appearances since 2016. 'Faizel Felix (52), a member of People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (PAGAD) who previously absconded from court facing a charge of illegal possession of a firearm has briefly appeared in court today." 'His appearance comes after he was arrested in Wynberg earlier today by the Hawks Crimes Against the State (CATS) team, Western Cape on a warrant of arrest which was issued in 2016. 'Felix has been on the run for the past 8 years. 'It is reported that Felix was arrested on August 19 2015, for the illegal possession of a firearm by the Special Investigating Group for the City of Cape Town, thereafter the matter was referred to the Hawks for further probing. 'His non-attendance led to the court issuing a warrant for his arrest and subsequently his arrest today. 'The case is ongoing, with the man's next court appearance scheduled for July 17nat the Wynberg Regional Court. Felix remains in custody.' Marais spokesperson, Kurt Nefdt confirmed more than 20 firearms were confiscated. The success comes after sporadic shootings in the Cape including Mitchells Plain where five people were killed and seven wounded in a matter of hours on July 3 and another mass shooting in Bishop Lavis at the weekend. 'I can confirm that there have been another five firearms confiscated since our last media release. Two firearms were confiscated in Bishop Lavis following the recent mass murder( not confirmed if it is linked to the incident), one in Kuils River and another two in the Somerset West area. I must mention that these figures change often as intensified operations to clamp down on illegal guns and ammunition are ongoing,' said Nefdt. According to Gun Free SA's Researcher and Analyst, Claire Taylor, more than 8000 guns have been stolen since 2023: 'In 2023/24 alone, civilians reported losing or having 8,452 guns stolen - that's 23 guns every single day." Lynn Philipps of the Cape Flats Safety Forum said they applauded the successes but called for an inquiry after more than 30 firearms vanished from the Mitchell's Plain Police Station since 2017. 'How many people were innocently caught in the crossfires or shot with these stolen firearms retrieved thus far?' she said.
