In a first, citizens will be able to self-enumerate during upcoming Census

A special dedicated web portal will be launched for self-enumeration during the upcoming Census, which will be available for both phases of the national enumeration exercise, officials said Monday.
In the country's first digital census, enumerators will collect the data of citizens using mobile applications on their Android and Apple phones, they said.
It will also be the first time in the country that citizens will get a chance to self-enumerate through a dedicated web portal which will be available for both the phases of Census - Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) and Population Enumeration.
"Digital Census initiative is a transformational step towards modernising the Census process. For the first time, technology will be used to collect data and send it electronically to the central server. This will result in early availability of Census data," an official said.
Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage.
HLO will start from April 1, 2026 followed by phase 2 starting on February 1, 2027 in which Population Enumeration (PE) will be conducted. Castes of household members will be enumerated in the ensuing Census.
Reference date for the Census 2027 will be 00:00 hrs of March 1, 2027 and 00:00 hrs of October 1, 2026 for Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir and snowbound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
It will be the 16th Census since start of the exercise in the country and 8th after Independence, for which a gazette notification was issued on June 16.
The Registrar General of India has put in place a three-tier focused and need-based training for each phase--national trainer, master trainer and field trainer.
The field trainers will train around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors for the massive exercise.
The RGI has told states and Union Territories to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of administrative units before December 31, when they will be considered final for the Census exercise.
In a letter to all states and Union Territories, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan had said that for the Census, all villages and towns are divided into uniform enumeration blocks and for each block, an enumerator is assigned to avoid any miss or repetition during the population count.
According to norms, the Census can be conducted only three months after the freezing of boundary limits of administrative units such as districts, sub-districts, tehsils, talukas and police stations.
Narayan had said that from April 1, 2026, the Houselisting Operation, the appointment of supervisors and enumerators and the work division among them will be done, and on February 1, 2027, the Census of the population will begin.

Apple to launch its first foldable iPhone next year with Samsung Galaxy Fold 7-like design and Rs 1.75 lakh price

Apple may finally be ready to launch its first foldable iPhone next year, after years of rumours and internal testing. While the company hasn't officially confirmed anything yet, multiple reports suggest that development is now in full swing, and a 2026 release is looking increasingly likely. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting the second half of the year, and the device could arrive alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. It will be Apple's first major iPhone redesign since the iPhone X, and by the looks of it, the foldable iPhone will follow a book-style design, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. That means we can expect a large inner display that opens like a tablet, along with a smaller cover screen for regular use. The expected price? Well, around $2,000, which is roughly Rs 1.72 lakh in reason for the delay is Apple's approach to new categories. The company has rarely been the first to venture into a new product category. Instead, the company often waits for the technology to mature and then tries to improve on it. With foldables, Samsung and other Android brands have already built the foundation, working through multiple generations of hardware and software. Reports suggest Apple sees this as an advantage, giving it the chance to avoid common pain points like screen creases and hinge durability. One of the key goals, apparently, is to reduce the visible crease when the display is unfolded. To achieve that, Apple is said to be experimenting with an advanced hinge mechanism and thinner far as the specs go, the foldable iPhone is tipped to feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It is rumoured to measure just 4.5mm when open, and around 9mm when folded, which would make it one of the slimmest foldable phones on the market. There's also talk of Apple using a new dual-camera lens system at the rear, and possibly a Meta Lens front camera. It could also be one of the first iPhones in a long time to ditch FaceID in favour of a side-mounted TouchID sensor, possibly to save space and make up for the slim aesthetic. The software side of things is also expected to see changes. Reportedly, iOS 27 is being built with the foldable form-factor in mind, meaning the user experience could be different from regular bar-style iPhones. Features that take advantage of the larger screen, multitasking, and possibly Apple Pencil support are all being is said to be targeting China as one of the key markets for the foldable, as demand for foldable phones continues to rise in the region. However, it's unclear whether the first-gen model will be widely available across global markets at again, nothing is official for now, so we suggest taking this information with a heavy grain of salt. That said, if everything goes as planned, this will turn out to be one of the most exciting products Apple has launched in years. WhatsApp to add ‘Quick Recap' feature to summarise multiple chats at once, report says

Meta is working on bringing a slew of new AI-powered features to WhatsApp. One of these is a recap feature called Quick Recap, which will give users a quick summary of unread messages. According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, this feature is currently under development and was spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.25.21.12).Though the feature is not yet available to beta testers, the report suggests that Quick Recap is aimed at improving how users navigate through lengthy or multiple chat threads. The feature is reportedly being built on WhatsApp's earlier message summaries feature, which allows users to get an overview of unread messages in a single conversation. This summary feature is currently available in the back to the new Quick Recap feature, it is reportedly said to be a bit more enhanced than the summary feature. It will enable users to select up to five chats simultaneously and receive a concise, AI-generated summary of key messages from each conversation. It is said to be designed to help users save the time and effort of scrolling through endless message threads, especially after being away from the app for a to access this feature As per the screenshot of the feature shared by WABetaInfo, to access Quick Recap, users will be able to go to the Chats tab, choose multiple conversations, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select the Quick Recap option. Once activated, Meta's in-house AI will process unread messages and produce a summarised version of what's been discussed — offering a quick and clean way to catch concerns The report notes that the Quick Recap feature is integrated with Meta's Private Processing technology, which promises a privacy-first approach that ensures user messages remain confidential even during AI processing. Meta earlier noted that its Private Processing uses end-to-end encryption, secure enclaves, and isolated computation to protect data. As a result, neither WhatsApp nor Meta can view the original messages or the generated summaries. The AI never processes readable data outside the secure enclave, safeguarding content even during feature Additionally, the report noted that this new Quick Recap feature will be completely optional for users. It will need to be enabled manually through Settings and won't be turned on by default. Any chats protected by WhatsApp's Advanced Chat Privacy settings will automatically be excluded from the availability expected soon As for availability, the Quick Recap feature is currently available only in preview via the Android beta channel. WhatsApp is expected to roll it out gradually to testers in future beta builds before releasing it more widely to all Android users.- Ends
