Small SUVs are now more popular and the best and cheapest subcompact SUVs have been revealed in a list compiled by Whatcar.
The Seat Arona
The Seat Arona offers a roomy interior, smooth ride and a petrol engine.
With an option of a 1 litre or a 1.5 litre engine motorists can choose how much power they would prefer to get from their Arona.
Unfortunately the durability of the Arona is in question with it reportedly failing short in this category.
A second hand Seat Arona will set motorists back by roughly £11,000.
The Suzuki Vitara
The boxy Suzuki Vitara has some real off road capability, something you would expect from an SUV.
A raised ride height and the option of four-wheel drive means the Vitara can tackle some rough and unforgiving surfaces.
It offers a choice of 1.4 litre and 1.5 litre engines with the 1.4 litre boosted by a turbo charger.
A second hand Vitara will cost motorists about £13,000 and it offers masses of interior space.
The Renault Captur
The Captur offers a reasonable and well rounded motor at decent prices.
Not the comfiest or the most powerful or the cheapest on the list the Renault does a lot of things well but none the best.
Motorists are given a choice of 1 litre and 1.6 litre engines offering some decent power.
The Captur will cost roughly £11,000 second hand depending on mileage.

The Peugeot 2008
The Peugeot offers a punchy bit of power generated by its 1.2 litre engine.
A seriously spacious interior offers plenty room for the whole family despite it only being a small SUV.
The motor has a modern ICockpit set-up allowing the driver to view the essential dials over the steering wheel instead of through it.
A second hand 2008 will set you back about £12,000 depending on model and mileage.

The Mini Countryman
A Mini isn't usually what comes to mind when thinking about SUVs.
But the Countryman offers everything other small SUVs do and then some.
Surprisingly for a Mini the countryman is spacious and offers a wealth of retro, classic Mini style.
With a bit of a firm ride the Countryman isn't the most comfortable but it does offer great reliability.
Motorists can choose a 1.5 litre and 2 litre engine size, both offering a decent boost in power compared to the other SUVs on the list.
A second hand Countryman will cost around £14,000

The Volkswagen T-Cross
The Volkswagen T-Cross offers a comfortable ride and plenty of interior space.
It offers several safety features and is easily manoeuvrable with its compact dimensions.
The T-Cross has two engine variants, a 1 litre and a 1.5 litre, both offering enough power but neither being that impressive.
A second hand T-Cross will cost about £13,000.

The Skoda Kamiq
With a slightly lower ride height than the other SUVs on this list the Kamiq's drive height is only slightly higher than that of a family hatchback.
It still offers an impressively spacious interior and great performance.
The Kamiq is easy to control and the ride is nice and smooth making it a great choice for families.
The Kamiq can be bought with a 1 litre and a 1.5 litre engine.
A second hand Kamiq, depending on mileage, will cost around £13,000.

The Audi Q2
Surprisingly, an Audi has made the list, despite being a typically more expensive brand the Q2 can be purchased second hand for a reasonable cost.
With more engine size options the Q2 can be more or less powerful depending on the variant you purchase.
The 1 litre, 1.4 litre and 1.5 litre petrol engines offer plenty of power at several levels.
Diesel 1.6 litre and 2 litre engines offer even more punch at the low end.
It offers a spacious, stylish interior and classic Audi styling on the exterior.
A second hand Q2 will set you back by about £13,000.

A great family car the T-Roc comes with several power options depending on your needs.
A 1 litre, 1.5 litre and 2 litre variant are available at varying prices.

The Ford Puma

Car Deal of the Day: Range-topping Peugeot 2008 GT Premium for entry-level money
Plug-free hybrid engine Navigation pack included Just £215.52 a month In recent years, Peugeot has elevated itself above its closest rivals with a stylish new design direction and interiors that belie its cars' relatively modest price tags. While the latest 3008 and 5008 models represent a true step-change for the brand, the smaller 2008 is still a desirable small SUV – especially in plush GT Premium trim. Right now, you can bag an all-singing, all-dancing 2008 GT Premium with the desirable 1.2 Hybrid 145 e-DSC6 powertrain for just £215.52 per month over two years via Pink Car Leasing Peugeot. The deal has a 5,000-mile annual mileage limit, but if you mainly drive in town and don't have access to a home charger, this could be an absolute steal. Advertisement - Article continues below To really ram home what a great offer this is, you only need to look at Peugeot's customer site. While this lease isn't strictly comparable to Peugeot's own PCP, you'd be looking at more than double the cost per month on similar terms. If you've no interest in forking out for a balloon payment at the end of the deal, this lease could be just the ticket. The best bit – aside from that attractive price – is that at the time of writing, there were over 200 cars available, so you should have a whole host of colours to choose from. GT Premium gets 18-inch wheels, heated front seats covered in Alcantara upholstery as standard, plus an HD front camera, built-in sat-nav and a wireless phone charger. It also comes with blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. As mentioned, the hybrid powertrain is perfect for those without access to a home chargepoint. Peugeot claims up to 62.1mpg, and CO2 emissions as low as 102g/km. With a light right foot, this car has the ability to slash your fuel bills overnight. But leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer has shared that these three vehicles are known for their reliability and reasonable price. Toyota RAV4 If you're looking for a hassle-free car and stability, then the motor expert recommends Toyota RAV4. According to Scotty, RAV4 can run for hundreds of thousands miles without ever breaking. He told Express: " I've never seen one of these break yet. As long as you don't drive through six feet of water and flood the whole car out, it's a really good system. "It's been out a while, this one is a 2015, and I've never seen one break." Data from Warranty Solutions Group has backed up Scotty's claims as it put RAV4 at the top of their reliability list. The study showed that only 9.68% of RAV4 owners had made car insurance claims. You can snap up this model for around £9,000, making it a budget friendly option. 152bhp and sub-£40k? This is my perfect Caterham Seven
You might have heard that Caterham has found a new engine supplier in Horse (decent name, I think), a joint venture between Renault and Geely. Horse engines will go into Caterham's Academy racing cars (which I have driven) from next year to replace the Ford 1.6-litre Sigma engine, which Ford hasn't made in years. Caterham has been assembling race car engines from a stock of blocks and bought-in parts and stopped using it in road cars some time ago. The Sigma is a nice engine. Autocar had one in a 140bhp Supersport long-termer that we ran in 2012-13, and I spent a lot of time in it, including an edifying day at Rye House kart circuit to see whether any car could have the handling of a go-kart. The answer was no, of course, but still, I remember it as one of the best driving days of my life. The Sigma is lighter than the Ford 2.0-litre Duratec engine (which Ford doesn't make any more either) that Caterham now uses in most of its road cars, and it has considerably more power than the kei car-compliant 660cc Suzuki-engined 170. But with the arrival of the Horse engine, the Sigma is finally on its way out. To mark its run-out, Caterham has announced a special-edition road car, the 310 Encore. The engine is tweaked to 152bhp at 7000rpm, plus you get a lightened flywheel and sports suspension. There are some other upgrades too, there will only be 25 of them and they will cost £39,995. Of late I've said that my favourite Sevens are the 170 and the 620, the extremes at either end of the scale, but this Encore car might just sit in a sweet spot reminiscent of that old Supersport. If you're looking for a Goldilocks Seven, this could be it.
