PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing

PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys are going to fire new head coach Brian Schottenheimer after this season, insists Fox Sports 1's Colin Cowherd, predicting that "America's Team'' will get "humiliated'' on a weekly basis, leading to owner Jerry Jones making for what would be for him an unprecedented move.

"Brian Schottenheimer is a one and done," Cowherd proclaimed, adding that he thinks this is his "least surprising prediction.'' "Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake. Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably blow them out in the division twice. 'One and done' happens all the time now.
"I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a lot of Sundays."
As we have pointed out before ...
Jones, for a variety of reasons and over 36 seasons, has never fired a head coach after one year. Chan Gailey was not an organizational favorite, but he got two years. Dave Campo was an organizational favorite — with two Super Bowl rings — but he lasted three years here while going 5-11 in each of those campaigns.

There is simply no precedent in Dallas upon which to base this prediction.
But now Colin has company.
Using reasoning we simply cannot grasp, ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio has placed Schottenheimer on his five-man Coaches Hot Seat for 2025. ... and more, he oddly suggests that Schottenheimer might get dumped by Jerry after one year.
Florio writes, "The key to knowing Schottenheimer's job security is to know whether and to what extent he has guaranteed money beyond 2025. ... Schottenheimer came cheaper. How cheap? So cheap that there would be no buyout if he's fired after one year?
"If so, Schottenheimer could need to do enough in 2025 to earn his employment for 2026.''

We don't get it.
Why does Florio think Schottenheimer's contract (however affordable it might be) features no standard buyout guarantees after 2025?
Why does Florio think that if Jones judged Schottenheimer's work in 2025 to be so abysmal that is merited dismissal that money would have anything to do with it?
And most of all, why does Florio (along with Cowherd) think any of this "Schottenheimer will be fired'' reporting is based on any sort of logic?

MLB Sends Zack Wheeler Message After Phillies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Phillies right-handed starting pitcher Zack Wheeler is in his eleventh major-league season after debuting with the division rival New York Mets in 2013. Advertisement Now in his sixth season with the Phillies—after five years with the Mets—Wheeler has compiled a 67–35 record in Philadelphia, cementing his status as the team's ace. He's earned All-Star Game appearances in 2021 and 2024, finishing as the NL Cy Young runner-up in both seasons. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (45)Kyle Ross-Imagn Images After another exceptional outing against the San Diego Padres in a 4-0 victory on Monday, MLB highlighted Wheeler's June performance. Advertisement The league wrote, 'Zack Wheeler finishes the month of June with an ERA of 0.58.' Wheeler's combined ERA in May and June stands at 1.43, with six of those earned runs coming in a single start, his only blemish over the past two months. In his other nine starts he has allowed just four earned runs (a 0.63 ERA), marking one of the best stretches of his career. This season is shaping up as the best of his career: he's in contention for his first NL Cy Young Award and has powered the Phillies' 50–35 charge to the top of the NL East. In March 2024, the 35-year-old veteran signed a three-year, $126 million extension with the Phillies and has made clear his intention to retire when the deal concludes. Nuggets Continue Roster Moves, Sign Former Champion After Recent Trade

Nuggets Continue Roster Moves, Sign Former Champion After Recent Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Nuggets went into the offseason with many question marks after a puzzling end to their season. Despite having a top-four seed, the Nuggets fired head coach Michael Malone just days before the end of the regular season. Many wondered how they'd fare in the playoffs with an interim head coach, David Adelman. Advertisement Perhaps to some's shock, the Nuggets defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs in seven games. In the next series, they took the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, to seven games. Nikola Jokic did everything he could to will his team to the Western Conference Finals, but the Thunder emerged victorious. One of those answers came when Shams Charania announced that the Nuggets were sending Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson. Advertisement Porter Jr. dealt with a shoulder injury that severly limited him in the playoffs and his discomfort when shooting was visible. Now, they send him to Brooklyn for Johnson, who can get his own shot off the dribble at any time. The Nuggers weren't done yet, however, as Shams Charania broke the news that the Nuggets were signing a former NBA Champion to their roster. "Free agent Bruce Brown Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal with the Denver Nuggets, sources tell ESPN," wrote Charania. "The 2023 NBA champion for the Nuggets returns to Denver. CAA's Ty Sullivan and Steven Heumann finalized the deal tonight with the Nuggets." Brown Jr. was an integral part of the Nuggets team that won the NBA Finals in 2023. Brown was the fourth-leading scorer for the Nuggets in the finals, averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists and steals per game. Advertisement Not only do they bring in someone familiar with the system and high-pressure moments, they bring back a player who was beloved by the Denver fans. Shortly after winning the title, Brown Jr. signed a 2-year $45 million deal with the Indiana Pacers. Nuggets fans will be happy to have him back.
