Labuan-KK express ferry draws strong response after three-year hiatus
LABUAN: The Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service has seen a surge in passengers since resuming operations on May 27, following a three-year suspension.
To date, more than 3,700 commuters have used the direct sea route, with each trip operating at full capacity of over 100 passengers.
The revival of the service, linking the duty-free island to Sabah's capital, has been hailed by federal authorities as a much-needed boost to regional connectivity.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa described the ferry's return as a key development for Labuan's socio-economic growth.
'This express ferry is not just a transportation service — it is a vital connector for regional economic, social and development networks,' she said.
Speaking to reporters at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal after welcoming passengers from Kota Kinabalu on Sunday, Dr Zaliha said the service facilitates community mobility, daily activities, and the transport of goods within local supply chains.
She expressed satisfaction with the strong public reception, noting that the ferry is popular among a wide range of travellers commuting between the two cities.
'This route offers a more convenient and time-saving alternative to the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry via Menumbok, especially for passengers without vehicles,' she said.
While the Ro-Ro ferry is generally preferred for travel to nearby districts such as Menumbok, Kuala Penyu, or Beaufort, the express ferry provides a direct, faster option to Kota Kinabalu.
Dr Zaliha also expressed hope that the operator would continue to enhance the service, including shortening travel time, to meet the growing demand.-Bernama

Ringgit ends lower as trade deal hopes dim ahead of US tariff deadline
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today, as fading hopes of a trade deal ahead of the upcoming US tariff deadline weighed on investor sentiment. At 6 pm, the local note depreciated to 4.2245/2305 versus the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.1995/2005. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the ringgit, which had enjoyed solid momentum in recent weeks, is now facing headwinds as markets brace for the July 9 tariff deadline, with US President Donald Trump making it clear there will be no extension. "With the deadline fast approaching, markets are shifting into defensive mode. "Asia foreign exchange market feels like it is trading in the dark - nervous, reactive, and unsure where the next blow will come from,' he told Bernama. Innes said that Trump's tough stance on Japan, particularly over rice and autos, has further fuelled regional tension, while his softened tone on India remains wrapped in diplomatic vagueness. "Until clearer signals emerge, the market is expected to remain light on conviction and heavy on caution,' he added. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It eased versus the British pound to 5.7859/7941 from 5.7797/7866, and fell against the euro to 4.9748/9818 from 4.9566/9625 yesterday. However, it appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9316/9360 from 2.9351/9389. The local note was also traded lower against its ASEAN counterparts. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.9/260.5 from 258.9/259.4, weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.49/7.51 from 7.45/7.46, shed vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3167/3217 from 3.3015/3059, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0233/0482 from 12.9363/9585 previously. - Bernama

KOTA KINABALU (July 2): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four individuals, including two company owners, for allegedly submitting documents with false information related to the procurement of permit to work (PTW) printing services worth RM5 million. According to sources, the suspects, three men and one woman, in their 40s and 50s, were arrested between 6 pm and 7 pm on June 30 when they appeared at the Sabah MACC office to give their statements. 'In addition to the two company owners, the other two suspects – a former administrator and a former assistant administrator of a local oil company – are believed to have committed the offences between 2019 and 2023,' the sources said. The arrests of all the suspects were made as a follow-up to Op Effingo, conducted by the MACC Special Operations Division. 'On June 30, the division raided 10 locations, including the suspects' residences, offices, and several companies around Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and the Klang Valley,' the sources said. 'The MACC seized 22 bank accounts, including Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) accounts, containing approximately RM2 million; various foreign currencies amounting to RM14,000; three luxury vehicles valued at around RM1.3 million; and three mobile phones. The suspects have been remanded for four days, starting Tuesday, after Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus allowed the MACC application at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court. MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, when contacted, confirmed the arrests. He said that the individuals will be charged under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, as well as other offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.-Bernama
