Three football fans dead and over 80 injured in horror stadium disaster after title win

The awful incident happened at the end of a match between MC Alger and NC Magra at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria.
Three football fans have tragically died and over 80 have been left injured after a horror stadium disaster.
The awful incident happened at the end of a match between MC Alger and NC Magra at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria, on Saturday.

The stadium holds around 64,200 people and the tragic event unfolded after MC Alger were confirmed as league title winners as a result of a 0-0 draw, prompting jubilant celebrations.

However, as reported by the Mirror, a picture of joy became a scene of horror when a security barrier gave way, sending several supporters from the top tier of the stadium tumbling.
The Algerian Ministry of Health released grave figures in their statement, which said: "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded. Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16."
As tributes poured in, MC Alger's players and staff offered to donate blood to the hospitals for those affected by the incident. The club is grieving, having confirmed the identity of one tragic casualty.
In a message relayed by officials at the club, they said: "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands.
"The board of directors, all members of management, all the team and players, come forward with sincere condolences and the most sincere condolences to all the family members of the deceased and their family."

Event organisers promptly halted any further celebrations set for MC Alger's championship win, as emergency services rushed to attend the scene. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended his deepest sympathies to all impacted by the disaster.
He wrote on X: "Following the painful incident that befell the supporters of MC Alger at the Stade du 5 Juillet, I can only pray for the soul of the deceased supporter. May God have mercy on him and grant him a place in his vast paradise.

"We offer our condolences to his family, his fellow supporters and the MC Alger team. I pray for the recovery of those injured in the incident and their swift return to their loved ones."
The stadium was christened after the date Algeria proclaimed independence in July 1962. It once held 110,000 spectators during an international friendly match between Algeria and Serbia in 2010.
However, due to the need to adhere to current football safety standards, the stadium's capacity has been reduced to 64,200. Before this unfortunate incident, there were plans to safely increase the stadium's capacity back up to 80,000.

Brendan Rodgers yet to be offered new Celtic contract as boss reveals exactly what it will take to keep him

The Hoops boss is in the final year of his contract Brendan Rodgers has revealed he's yet to be offered a new contract by Celtic. ‌ And the Hoops boss has made it clear he won't stick around just to "maintain" levels. ‌ Rodgers is in the third and final year of his second stint in charge and held talks with principal shareholder Dermot Desmond over the summer. ‌ Asked if his future had become any clearer, Rodgers said: "There's no further update no, and for the sake of honesty and clarity I can tell you exactly where we're at. "So I said when I came here first that I'd do three years minimum. People had me out the door at the end of last season or going various place. "I said then and I'll say it now - there's nowhere to go. I love being here. I've done two years. I've got one more year to go. "Dermot and Michael and I had a conversation over the summer on where we were at and where it sits with myself and everything else and I said I'm very happy here. "There's conditions we want in to be able to improve and be better because I'm not the type of manager that's good at maintaining anything. "If it's just something to maintain, I'm not the manager for Celtic. It'll be someone else. But to build and grow and develop and push, then of course I love being at Celtic. ‌ "So when that time comes, when the club offer me a deal or not, then it doesn't make a difference to me. Because every single day of my life I'll give everything here to the very last day. "So when the club feel there's that time to make an offer then they will do but as I said it's slightly different from a manager's perspective to a player. "Players and clubs need to ensure they're tied in especially at this time of the year when there's maybe only six months left. ‌ "It's slightly different for a manager but it doesn't change my hunger and desire here for the work." "Together with our daughter, we are now trying to find our way back to life step by step. Special thanks go to our families, friends, and FC Bayern Munich for their discretion and great support over the past few months – that means a lot to us." ‌ "We ask the public and media representatives to be considerate and respect our privacy. We kindly ask you to refrain from further inquiries or statements. Lisa and Sven." Little Len was born in 2018, while Ulreich was enjoying his first stint at Bayern Munich, reports the Mirror. The shot-stopper departed for Hamburg in 2020 before making his return to Bavaria just one year later. Countless supporters from Bayern and rival clubs alike have sent touching messages of support after the devastating announcement became public. "May he rest in peace... stay strong, Sven and family," one supporter wrote. "I feared that something like this was the reason for his absence," another person expressed. "Horrible. Praying for peace, strength, and comfort. What is more devastating as a parent than losing your child.. "You could see in his few public appearances in the last months that he was going through something terrible," a third individual penned. "Now the heartbreaking certainty. The worst thing that can happen to any parent. Sending lots of strength to Ulle and his family. Rest in peace, Len". Ulreich, a former Germany Under-21 international, has clocked up over 100 appearances for Bayern during his two stints with the club. He only played twice last season, once in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League, as Vincent Kompany's team clinched the league title. The seasoned goalkeeper was seen at an open training session on Wednesday as Kompany's squad gear up for their new season. They are set to face Stuttgart in the DFL-Supercup on August 16, while their first league match is at home against RB Leipzig six days later.

The 30-year-old has been eyed by Greek heavyweights Olympiacos and AEK Athens this summer with the latter warned off Well-travelled Cyriel Dessers has revealed he wants to tick off some far-flung destinations on his football bucket list but remains dedicated to Rangers. ‌ The 30-year-old has been eyed by Greek heavyweights Olympiacos and AEK Athens this summer with the latter warned off due to the Ibrox side's £5m asking price. ‌ Dessers remains an integral part of Russell Martin's squad and won't depart this summer unless the figure they want is met for a player who has scored 51 goals over the past seasons. ‌ And the Nigeria international has further adventures on his mind before he calls time on his career. Speaking to Sportsboom, Dessers said: "It's a hard choice, let me say something more exotic.' "But let me say a place like Japan, United States (MLS), South Africa or Nigeria. It would be nice to play there." "I still have two years left on my contract with Rangers. It's a fantastic club, and I'm happy there.' "When you score that number of goals, it's normal for other teams to show interest. I've seen the links with Olympiacos, but I don't know anything specific about that. These kinds of rumours are normal.'
