England star Hannah Hampton opens up on health condition and turning down surgery
England's football sensation, Hannah Hampton, has opened up about her ongoing battle with a long-term eye condition, revealing that despite multiple surgeries, her eyes are "still not straight".
The Lioness goalkeeper played a pivotal role in England's recent Euros triumph, fending off numerous Spanish attempts during the penalty shoot-out.
Despite suffering from strabismus - an eye condition that affects depth perception - the 24 year old has shown her mettle on the pitch. During her appearance on Good Morning Britain today, she confessed to still experiencing difficulties with her vision.
Hannah disclosed that while further surgery for her eye condition is an option, she is reluctant to take the risk. This revelation comes after her triumphant Euros win, defying doctors who had previously told her she wouldn't be able to play football, reports the Mirror.
In conversation with GMB's Ed Balls and Kate Garraway, Hannah elaborated: "I was born cross-eyed, I had to undergo multiple surgeries from when I was three and obviously later to correct my vision. To put my eyes straight again, to see if it would help in any way.
"They're still not straight. I can go back for more operations but there's always that risk that it won't improve your eyesight. It might make it worse. It's something you've got to weigh up."
When presenter Ed noted that things seem to be going rather well for the England star, she responded: "I know! So why change it if it's going well."
She later revealed how medics advised her to quit football as a youngster because of her vision problems. "The doctor said I shouldn't play sports because I don't have any depth perception, which basically [means] I can't judge distances.
"Which as a keeper, I don't know how it works, but my parents never really told me until I was about 12 or 13 and I was already playing sport... and they would say 'this isn't normal, you shouldn't be doing that' but my parents always said 'if it makes her happy, we're not going to stop her' and I'm glad they didn't take the doctor's advice as I managed to live out my dream."
Earlier this week, the football ace disclosed that she had been coping with the devastating loss of her grandfather, who passed away just two days before the Euros kicked off. "Dear Grandpa," she posted on Instagram.
"Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It still doesn't feel real.
"I kept thinking when I'd call nannie I'd hear your voice again - one of your jokes, or one of those little comments you'd make that somehow said everything without saying much at all. You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like."
She further expressed her sorrow that he wasn't able to see her debut at her first major tournament, stating: "But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength."

Thomas Partey agrees transfer move to new club after Arsenal exit
Thomas Partey has reached an agreement with his next club after leaving Arsenal as a free agent. The Ghana midfielder ended his five-year spell at the Emirates Stadium at the end of the 2024-25 season. Partey made 167 appearances for the Gunners and almost helped them win the Premier League twice. Mikel Arteta was reportedly keen for Partey to sign a contract extension but a deal could not be reached. The 32-year-old was linked with several European clubs as he contract with Arsenal ran down and Villarreal have won the race to secure his signature. Spanish outlet AS say Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, have agreed a one-year deal with Partey. It is claimed Partey is expected to become a Villarreal player next week after he gave the move the green light. If Partey's move to Villarreal goes through, he will join his former Arsenal teammate Nicolas Pepe at the Spanish club. Shortly after he left Arsenal, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The offences are reported to have taken place in 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Partey denies the charges and 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name', his lawyer said. More Trending Following the charges, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was '100%' sure the club following the right processes while dealing with the matter. 'The club was very clear in its statement,' Arteta added. 'There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.' Partey, who joined Arsenal in a £45m move from Atletico Madrid in 2020, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Chloe Kelly received explanation for MBE snub as Lioness now set to be rewarded
Chloe Kelly has been a key figure for England at the last two Euros, and the Lionesses forward is set to earn the recognition she deserves after being snubbed for an MBE in 2023 England star Chloe Kelly could be set to receive an MBE after being controversially overlooked for the honour in 2023. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated that "recognition is coming" for certain members of the Euro 2025-winning Lionesses squad. Following their triumph three years earlier, Sarina Wiegman 's team successfully retained their European title in Switzerland. The Lionesses overturned a deficit to beat World Cup nemeses Spain on spot-kicks and claim the trophy for the second consecutive tournament. Kelly once more proved England's saviour as she slotted home the crucial penalty in Basel. The celebrations echoed those from Euro 2022, when her extra-time strike secured victory against Germany in the final. Despite this, the 27-year-old was excluded from the 2023 New Year's Honours list whilst team-mates Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead were awarded MBEs. Record goalscorer Ellen White received the same recognition, while skipper Leah Williamson was made an OBE. Kelly and her fellow Lionesses were snubbed in 2023 after the honours committee said it did not wish to recognise "the entire squad." As for its reasoning, the committee explained its logic was due to the fact that the tournament was a European championship and not a World Cup. "We tried to stick to the principles of the honour system, which is to recognise excellence and to recognise extraordinary contributions," said Sir Hugh Robertson, chairman of the sports honours committee, at the time. "That's particularly the case with [the] selection of players who set the country alight. So we wanted to recognise and capture that, but to do it in a way that picked out the outstanding performances we saw throughout the tournament. "I think also in the back of my mind was the fact it was a European competition and not a world one. They have a world championship next summer." However, Kelly and fellow Euro 2025 hero Hannah Hampton could be in line for recognition in the upcoming New Year's Honours. Manager Wiegman might also receive an award of her own, with rumours she could be named an honorary Dame. "What Sarina and our Lionesses have achieved is nothing short of remarkable," Starmer told the Sun on Sunday (via the Daily Express). "So recognition is coming - and it will be worthy of their historic success." The Lionesses made history as the first English football team to win a major international honour since 1966 when they secured the European title three years ago. However, Wiegman's accomplishment in retaining the title this summer is an even more significant achievement. To begin with, England didn't enjoy home-field advantage this time around. Moreover, they triumphed over a Spain side that has been a dominant force in international football in recent years, having beaten England to the World Cup title in 2023. It's almost poetic that after being overlooked for an MBE when England's heroes were last recognised, Kelly returned to play a pivotal part in the Euro 2025 final. The Arsenal attacker also came off the bench to net a 119th-minute comeback winner against Italy in the semi-finals. Chelsea goalkeeper Hampton proved equally vital throughout the tournament and produced two legendary stops during the penalty shootout triumph over Spain. She earned Player of the Match honours for her display in the decider, with Wiegman effusive in her praise of the new No. 1. "You really have to step up and show it and so did she," she said of her goalkeeper's heroics in Switzerland. "I think she's done amazing. It's a very bit like a fairy tale to stop those penalties in the final of the Euros and to win it." Hampton's contribution proved even more remarkable considering she had enormous shoes to fill following Mary Earps' retirement. Nevertheless, she has slotted effortlessly into the position and played a vital role in her nation retaining the European title.
