
‘Why are you so damn gay?': the public policing of Karl-Anthony Towns' joy
The second time I danced was with myself – and it would be my last. I wrapped my arms around the fleshy part of my waist as Seal's Kiss from a Rose played from the Batman Forever CD in my stereo. Alone in my room, I was OK with the mirror seeing every part of me. I danced like Shirley Temple with Buddy Ebsen. Like my father guided me. The only thing that could have broken my rhythm did. My stepmother filled the doorway, barefoot except for a roach she had stepped on.
'Why are you so damn gay?'
That question didn't land as curiosity. It landed as a sentence – as instruction. From that moment on, joy had to pass inspection before it could be expressed.
A decade later, in a different home and a different neighborhood, I stood over a sink, washing someone else's blood off my hands – still shaking from having fought my way out of being jumped. I wasn't just cleaning up. I was trying to scrub away any lingering doubt about my masculinity.
This essay is about what happens when boys who move freely are taught to fear their own rhythm – and what it means when grown men like Karl-Anthony Towns are mocked for keeping theirs.
Confusion, softness and the urge to question societal norms are beaten out of all of us – but especially out of young boys of color in dangerous neighborhoods. It's as if the praxis of masculinity demands violence as the antidote to vulnerability. Even laughter had rules. You couldn't let it be too high-pitched. Too quick. You learned to clap shoulders, not hold hands. I didn't immediately reconcile my behavior with its double, but I spent my adolescence trying to prove my stepmom wrong.
Since moving from Minnesota to New York, expectations for former No 1 draft pick Karl-Anthony Towns have increased on all fronts. In New York, the world's largest media market, scrutiny moves faster than any headline – amplified by the virality of social media.
Towns is discovering what happens when softness is punished, when queerness is projected, and when public figures become unwilling avatars in culture wars over masculinity.
The term 'zesty', a softened descendant of homophobic slang, became Towns' shadow. It trailed him through every three-point play, podcast outtake and postgame moment. He became the target for people eager to mock what they couldn't define.
In Hilton Als's The Women, he recalls being called an 'auntie man' – a Barbadian phrase for a queer man, used with equal parts derision and familiarity. For Als, the term was both burden and lens – a way to understand how femininity in male bodies disturbs cultural norms. Towns, in his gestures and tones, touched that nerve – not by coming out, but by refusing to contort himself into the rigid, humorless frame of what a man in sports is supposed to be.
Towns is far from alone. Figures like Tyler, the Creator, Russell Westbrook and Odell Beckham Jr have also been queer-coded and mocked online – not for coming out, but for expressing aesthetic freedom that unsettles traditional expectations of Black masculinity.
Reading Als, I realized I wasn't just haunted by my stepmother's question. I was haunted by the idea that my joy, softness and rhythm might be interpreted the same way – that to some, my way of moving through the world would always be 'off'.
Homophobia today isn't what it was in the 1990s, when the idea of a gay NBA player sparked outrage. American culture has shifted. Most people – not just millennials – know someone who is openly gay. Even baby boomers often count LGBTQ+ individuals among their friends or family.
This broader familiarity has normalized queerness – but mostly white, heteronormative queerness. During his presidency, Donald Trump welcomed 'Gays for Trump', revealing how sexuality has become more complicated in modern politics, so long as it's white and votes red.
But in sports, John Amaechi and Jason Collins remain punchlines. Dwight Howard was the most recent NBA player to be publicly dissected for his queer preferences. His situation involved layers of moral, legal and consensual complexity, but the cultural judgment echoed the same old anxieties.
Towns is ostensibly straight. He's in a public relationship with Jordyn Woods. But his moments of effeminacy have gone viral on TikTok, trickling down through Twitter and into Facebook echo chambers. Many cite his Dominican heritage – not as a direct link to queerness, but to the flamboyance, rhythm and emotional expressiveness embedded in that culture. And if he were gay or bi or queer, what exactly would that change? KAT is still a dawg.
It's ironic that this ridicule came during the best season of his career. He averaged 24.7 points and a career-high 13.5 rebounds while leading the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years. He delivered signature performances, including back-to-back 40-point games and a playoff triple-double. His offensive dominance marked a personal and franchise turning point.
But it wasn't enough. The online ridicule intensified, crystallizing into what became known as 'Zesty Karl-Anthony Towns', or Zesty KAT – a meme that painted the Knicks star as flamboyant or queer-coded based on voice, gesture and posture. The term resurfaced in 2024 after viral TikTok compilations dissected clips from his postgame interviews and on-court expressions, reigniting during the 2025 playoffs.
One of the most viral examples came from X user @Zazamyodor, who quote-tweeted a clip of Towns softly saying 'for sure' with the caption, 'That 'for sure' was nasty work.' The post earned over 46,000 likes and helped cement 'zesty' as shorthand for mocking his style, despite his career peak.
I still haven't danced like I did that first time, or even the second. But I think about it often: what it meant to be light on my feet, unburdened, joyful without explanation. What Karl-Anthony Towns is enduring isn't just a meme cycle. It's the same sentence I heard in my doorway, repackaged for likes and algorithm reach: 'Why are you so damn gay?' Not a question, an accusation. In this world, to be joyful in your body, to be expressive without apology, is still treated like defiance. Towns may not need to dance like I did. But every time he celebrates a three-pointer with flair, every time he speaks in a tone too tender for a seven-footer, he keeps the rhythm going for those of us who had ours interrupted.

The best theatre to stream this month: tailoring comedy Alterations gets a fitting tribute
Almost 10 years after his death and nearly 50 after it was written, Guyana-born British playwright Michael Abbensetts' tailoring comedy arrived at the National Theatre in February for Rufus Norris's final season. There's more transfixing tailoring in this 2024 dance production marking the 300th anniversary of Bach's oratorio. The always arresting German choreographer Sasha Waltz introduces her dancers, in the nude, adjusting their smocks at sewing machines before donning the costumes for a spellbinding performance. On Arte. Tianzhuo Chen's 12-hour 'theatre-rave' Trance, recently staged at London's Southbank Centre, provokes some extreme reactions. 'People say it's the best performance ever,' says Chen. 'They feel healed, cleansed.' Then again: 'Some people really don't like it!' Incredibly, the whole thing – shot in 2024 – is on YouTube, so you can make up your own mind. It's the song of the summer in the West End, enchanting passersby outside the Palladium where it's delivered from the balcony by Rachel Zegler (and her alternate, Bella Brown, who also has an incredible voice) in an alfresco swerve during Jamie Lloyd's production. If you can't catch it live, Zegler's recording of the Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber perennial is now available. The mix tape is having a moment, thanks to a new BBC romantic drama. But in playwright and performer Azan Ahmed's solo show, the tape unspools a teacher's relationship with his father. Esme Allman's production, seen at the Bush theatre in 2024, is available from the Theatre Channel. With music and lyrics by Caroline Wigmore and Jen Green, Golden Toad Theatre's audio musical on YouTube is based on the book by Gillian Hibbs about a green-fingered boy whose gardening projects grow all over his family's flat. Aimed at children aged three to eight, it should brighten up summer journeys or rainy days at home. IJAD Dance Company is on a mission to put technology at the heart of performance in order to 'future-proof the arts and transform audience engagement'. In June it presented a hybrid theatre festival both online and at Hammersmith Studios. Five of those shows are now available on demand at Open Online Theatre until 4 August. Arsema Thomas, who landed a breakout role in Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte shortly after leaving Lamda, makes her professional stage debut at Richmond's Orange Tree in a comedy spun from the stories of Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi. Written by Chiara Atik, it's directed by Blanche McIntyre and co-stars Freddy Carter. Available 12-15 August.

Riverside Theatre: 'West End of the north coast' closes doors for final time
The closure of the Riverside theatre means a generation of performers in the north west will miss out on the experience of being on a "proper stage", the owner of a dance company has theatre at the Coleraine campus of Ulster University (UU) will stop operating on venue was billed as Northern Ireland's oldest professional theatre outside of Belfast.A UU spokesperson previously said the building had "come to the end of its life" and needed significant investment. Catherine Lamont, who owns Innova Irish dance company in Portstewart, first took to the venue's stage when she was eight or nine years old. Her dance company has used the Riverside Theatre regularly over the last twelve years."It's always been such a special place and whenever I started my own company, that was the theatre that we wanted to have our debut performance [in]," she Lamont said there were some great spaces in the area but the Riverside was "unique"."Somebody described it, it's like the West End of the north coast. It's our West End," she said."Especially for the younger children coming in as performers, you really feel the sense that you are on a proper theatre background facilities, the lights, the music, the wings, the drama." The venue opened in the 1970s with a capacity of about 350 January, concerns were raised over its long-term future after UU, which owns the venue, confirmed it was reviewing the way it was Coast and Glens Borough Council was asked to consider entering into a lease agreement and taking over the estimated that essential repairs could cost almost £750,000, with yearly running costs of almost £500, June, a council spokesperson said it already operated two arts and culture centres at a significant council spokesperson added that taking on the Riverside Theatre and "its extensive repair bill and associated operating costs" would have a direct impact on how council invests in other projects it had already committed to. Jayne Wisener, an actress from Coleraine who has starred in The Inbetweeners and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, performed at the Riverside both as a young person in amateur productions and more recently in touring shows."The great thing about the place was less the theatre itself and actually the local audiences, who were always incredibly supportive and up for a laugh," she said."I think it's very sad that the theatre's closing down for good."It's been a huge part of our community's theatrical experience for so many years."Ms Wisener said she would like a new theatre or cultural hub to be created in Coleraine to allow the theatre scene "to thrive". University 'committed to explore new ways to support the arts' In May, an UU spokesperson said "in the face of unprecedented financial challenges... it is more important than ever that we focus our resources on core academic activities.""Having supported and delivered this civic asset for 50 years, the building itself has now come to the end of its life and requires significant capital investment to remain in use," they spokesperson added that the university appreciated the theatre's closure would come as "a disappointment to many" but said it was committed to exploring new ways to support arts and culture in the latest financial statement showed it had a surplus of more than £80m. Social Democratic and Labour Party East Londonderry MLA Cara Hunter said the theatre's closure was "absolutely gutting""This venue has been the lifeblood of our arts and cultural scene for decades. Permanent closure would be a devastating blow, leaving this as the only council area without a dedicated theatre," she said."Without this space, the next generation of actors and performers will be forced to look elsewhere for opportunities and our community will be all the poorer for it."

Heaven, I'm in Heaven...Kathleen Marshall's enchanting new production of Irving Berlin's Top Hat is the perfect summer tonic, says Patrick Marmion
Top Hat (Festival Theatre, Chichester) Verdict: Strictly (fun) dancing There may be trouble ahead, but while there's music and moonlight and love and romance... let's face the music and dance! The lyrics of one of Irving Berlin 's most famous songs pretty much sums up Kathleen Marshall's effervescent and near faultless production of the musical based on the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers' 1935 movie, Top Hat. Musical trainspotters will already pre-love Marshall's work, after her stunning 2021 production of Anything Goes which welcomed us out of lockdown. This doesn't have quite the same panache (lacking the wit of P.G. Wodehouse). And the company tap numbers aren't quite as tumultuous. But for sheer blissful froth, it sure gave me goosebumps. Marshall is once again at the top of her game with choreography that's joyful, whirling, and detailed, her dancers seeming to float on air. And if you can keep up with the speed of her leading duo's footwork, top hats off to you: they match Astaire and Rogers, clunk for clunk and click for click. As showman Jerry Travers, Phillip Attmore is exceptionally nifty. The only evidence that his feet touch the ground is that we hear them. And as the object of the story's romantic confusion Dale Tremont, Lucy St. Louis doesn't miss a beat, ensuring that they are indeed both Dancing Cheek To Cheek. Hitting her stride, St. Louis's voice brings to mind Nina Simone, or Ella Fitzgerald. And not only does she have sparkling charm, she has a set of sensational outfits designed in the show by a corny Italian fop Alberto Beddini (a very game Alex Gibson-Giorgio) — but in reality by Yvonne Milnes and set designer Peter McKintosh. This display of swishing silks and feather-trimmed satins deserves a catwalk of its own. St. Louis even has one pink three-piece suit seemingly just for crossing the stage. Attmore may be atypically camp for a red-blooded ladies' man, but he does have a goofy grin and is as quick on his cues as he is in his shoes. But Clive Carter, as his out-of-shape manager, prone to comic misfortune, is a hoot; alongside Sally Ann Triplett as his spendthrift wife armed with lethal one liners. Their beautifully honed barbs are distilled into a glorious comic hymn to long marriage: Outside Of That, I Love You. Alongside McKintosh's elegantly adaptable Art Deco set, backed by a crescent design like a half-moon face of Big Ben, this is an enchanting two hours 40 minutes, driven by some of Berlin's finest toe tappers. Not least among them, the title number — as potent an earworm as you could wish for; ensuring this delightful show is strictly fun dancing. Top Hat runs at Chichester Festival Theatre until September 6. A Role To Die For (Marylebone Theatre, London) Verdict: Quantum of comedy Rating: EastEnders' star Tanya Franks has a role to die for — or maybe die another day for — in this highly amusing spoof about the casting of a new James Bond. Her character, Deborah, is obviously inspired by Barbara Broccoli who, along with her half-brother Michael Wilson, inherited the Bond film production company, Eon, from her father Albert Broccoli. Waste products hit the fan when Debs discovers that 'David', the hot new actor she's lined up to be the next 007, is actually a sex pest. Then, just when she think she's sort out that mess, there's another awkward hitch involving David's classy yet clumsy replacement. All the while, billionaire moneybags 'Le Croix' (read Jeff Bezos) is circling, in the hope of buying Deb's beloved company. The plot of Jordan Waller's comedy lurches around like it's hoovered up too much marching powder, but there are some priceless one-liners including one aimed at Deb's co-producer: 'You don't get money for nothing, Malcolm. Even your ex-wives had to marry you.' Derek Bond's production, first seen in Cirencester earlier this year, moves at a good lick, but audition recordings of would-be Bonds undermine our suspension of disbelief. And Cory Shipp's set design looks like the Headmistress's office at a second-tier public the Head had a weird crush on 007. Franks has fun as the flamboyantly cursing Debs, but also nails the businesswoman's panic-stricken insecurity. Philip Bretherton lends brilliant Ted Danson comic vibes to Malcolm, while Harry Goodson-Bevan is amusingly overlooked as Deborah's woke son 'Q'. And Obiama Ugoala made me laugh out loud as a giant, last-ditch Bond. PATRICK MARMION A Role To Die For runs at the Marylebone Theatre until August 30. Hamlet (Sutton Hoo, Suffolk) Verdict: Hamlet is young again Rating: Under a great chestnut tree above the river Deben stalks a 20ft tall ghost, circling the audience on the stands. Its face is the majestic helmet from the royal burial ship at Sutton Hoo (remember that film The Dig?). In this fast-moving production the giant puppet is the ghost of Hamlet's father: three half-glimpsed operators bow its steely head towards him, its huge mailed hands reach out as it tells of 'foul and most unnatural murder'. It's a showstopping moment, but director Joanna Carrick of Red Rose Chain keeps more coming: fiery confrontations, or moments of comedy played wonderfully broad but faithful to Shakespeare. The gravediggers, often cut down by more earnest directors, are pure music-hall. Ailis Duff is a wickedly funny Polonius, too; lecturing an eye-rolling Ophelia on morality. Teenage girls giggled happily. It's a play where angry youth confronts both power and private confusions, and it suits this leaping, running, tussling young cast of eight who double (and treble) as characters around the handsomely vigorous, brooding figure of Vincent Moisy as the prince of Denmark. He speaks the famous lines as if thinking them out fresh, springing on and off the high wooden tower and gateway with particular confidence since, in this small multiskilled company, he personally built most of the set. As, indeed, he and the team did in New York last month, in Carrick's play The Ungodly; the Witchfinder General (Moisy) and the rest of the crew hammering planks together for Brits on Broadway. It would be easy for a small outdoor production to treat Hamlet lightly; or stick to easier plays. Certainly Carrick presents it with enough clarity to enchant a ten-year-old, there for a birthday treat. But the text is respected more than in some grander productions I could mention. And despite defying fashion to use no amplification, every character makes every word audible in the big space. A final wild, cartoonish fight makes you gasp: the rest is the player-corpses rise and gently harmonize in the leafy dusk. Beautiful. LIBBY PURVES Until August 23, Extraordinary Women (Jermyn Street Theatre, London) Verdict: Confusion reigns Rating: Squirrelled away in a basement just off Piccadilly Circus is the idyllic island of Sirene — or that's the idea. Alex Maker's set design does well to make the most of such a small stage (one which must be crossed in the interval to reach the only toilets in the building). Rather than the staging, it is the convoluted storytelling which drags you away from 1920's Italy, and back to that basement in Central London. The musical, based on a 1928 novel by Compton Mackenzie (Monarch Of The Glen, Whisky Galore), follows Aurora (Caroline Sheen), who has followed her lover Rosalba (Amy Ellen Richardson) to this remote Italian island at the end of WWI. Rosalba has been busy, creating chaos and scaring away the tourists. Enter a group of sirens, who act as the catalyst for the show's narrative. Parthenope (Monique Young) is tasked with cleaning up Rosalba's mess before the citizens of the island remove her forcibly. She summons three other sirens (Sophie Louise Dann, Jasmine Kerr and Amira Matthews), and they proceed to form a multinational cast of women...a French diva, a Russian composer, a couple of Americans, and so on. (Jack Butterworth plays all five of the male roles, cycling through as many accents as costumes.) How do the sirens know about these women they are playing? Do they become them? Or simply control them? Why do the characters keep up the act even when alone? I have no idea. The story becomes tangled, with multiple plot lines and love triangles distracting from the real meat of the show. As a result, the first half feels frustratingly haphazard. Things improve in the second half, as you begin to get a grip on the confusing premise — and the end (of the show) is in sight. The highlight for me was the two-man band in the corner providing live music. It's clear from their well-rounded vocal performances that many of the actors are singers first. That's not enough, however, to distract from the thoroughly bewildering plot. And without a strong narrative foundation, Extraordinary Women ends up being, sadly, rather ordinary.
