‘When someone wants…': Kanahiya Lal's son on Delhi HC order staying ‘Udaipur Files', film on father's murder

The son of Kanhaiya Lal, the Udaipur tailor who was murdered in 2022, on Thursday said that while the film on his father's death was banned in three days, his murderers haven't been punished even after three years. The Udaipur Files movie's producer, Amit Jani, said he will appeal the Delhi high court verdict to the Supreme Court.(PTI file)
Yash Sahu's statement comes after the Delhi High Court ordered a stay on the release of the film 'Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder'. The film was scheduled to be released on Friday, July 11.
"Despite having video evidence and everything else, the criminals have not been punished for the last three years. And when someone wants to show the truth to the country through a film, a whole organisation comes forward for it. And within just three days, the film was stayed. But when the criminals have to be punished in a case, this does not happen..." news agency ANI quoted Sahu as saying.
The high court's stay is temporary and will remain in effect until the Centre decides on Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind's revision application against the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Still, the film producer, Amit Jani, said he will appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court.
"We had screened this film for their lawyer, Kapil Sibal, so even after the screening, he had to oppose it because he had taken fees for it. Today, the high court said that this film is being stayed right now. We are going to the Supreme Court to challenge this decision. They have been asked to go to the Central Government, and the government will give its decision within seven days whether the film is right or wrong...," he told ANI.
Verdict on the 'Udaipur Files'
A Delhi High Court division bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal, passed the interim order in the 'Udaipur Files' case, halting the movie's release.
The order came as the court heard two petitions, one by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind and another by journalist Prashant Tandon, challenging the CBFC's decision to grant certification to the film.
The petitioners argued that the film's release could disturb communal harmony and pose a serious threat to public order, given the sensitive nature of the subject.
The Court observed that since the petitioners had been relegated to invoke the revisional remedy under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the film's release must be put on hold until a decision is made on their application for interim relief.
"We provide that till the grant of interim relief is decided, there shall be a stay on the release of the film," the bench stated.
The film is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur, who was brutally killed in broad daylight by two men allegedly angered by a social media post in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The incident had triggered national outrage and raised serious concerns about radicalisation and communal violence.

‘Chinar Corps will invariably send terrorists to meet their maker': Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai

Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the face of the Indian Army during Operation Sindoor and deputy chief of army staff (Strategy), praised the Chinar Corps for its role in Monday's encounter near Srinagar in which three terrorists, including Pahalgam attack mastermind Suleiman Shah, were neutralised. Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai hailed Chinar Corps for its role in Monday's encounter near Srinagar, calling them valiant warriors of the Indian Army. (ANI File) In a post on X, Lt Gen Ghai highlighted the harsh terrain and operational challenges security forces face during anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. 'Sometimes, when you despair that results are not forthcoming, you only need to spare a thought for the tough terrain and conditions that affect such operations,' he wrote. He went on to commend the Chinar Corps' commitment to national security, saying, 'Never forget that the Chinar Corps will invariably send terrorists to meet their maker. Salute to the valiant warriors of this exalted outfit of the Indian Army.' The remarks came soon after the confirmation that three terrorists were killed in a joint operation, codenamed Operation Mahadev, launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Lidwas region near Dara, close to Dachigam National Park. Suleiman Shah, also known as Hashim Moosa, was the mastermind behind the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Suleiman Shah had previously served in the Pakistan Army, reported NDTV. He was affiliated with the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). 'It is a prolonged operation and is still continuing in which J&K police, paramilitary and army have an exchange of fire (with terrorists) in higher reaches. As per the interior reports, three bodies are being observed and seems to be neutralised. It is an ongoing operation and I would not like to divulge much at this moment. We will share details with you at an opportune time. It will take us some time for identification and all that. The (security) parties are still inside,' IGP Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Birdi told the media.

Vindu Dara Singh Slams Pakistan For Fostering Terrorism: ‘Shame On Those People'

Vindu Dara Singh spoke about India's match against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup. He also slammed Pakistan for harbouring terrorists on its soil. Ever since the deadly attack in Pahalgam, India's relations with Pakistan have deteriorated. Amid the ongoing tensions between the two countries, Son of Sardaar 2 actor Vindu Dara Singh spoke strongly against Pakistan's role in fostering terrorism. The 61-year-old actor also weighed in on the ongoing debate following the announcement of the Asia Cup fixture between the two nations. In the Asia Cup 2025, India is placed in Group A, alongside Pakistan. The two countries will face off against each other on September 14. Singh shared that sports should bring people together. 'We all know whatever has been going on, but sports is a different field," Vindu told ANI. Vindu Dara Singh On Pakistan The actor further urged Pakistan to stop harbouring terrorist groups on their soil as it would ultimately lead to their global isolation. He added, 'Pakistan needs to realise that they are losing out by doing wrong to India… We want peace, but they need to initiate this time. They are the ones who cause the problem. India has never attacked any country first. Shame on those people in Pakistan who support terrorism." Vindu's comment came just days after the announcement of the Asia Cup 2025 fixture between India and Pakistan. The tournament, organised by the Asian Cricket Council, is scheduled to take place from September 9 to September 25 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Initially, India was supposed to host the tournament. But the recent military tensions between the countries following the deadly attack in Pahalgam has forced the authorities to organise the tournament at a neutral venue, the UAE. The terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22 claimed the lives of 26 people. Post the attack, India launched a series of precision strikes under Operation Sindoor in May to destroy terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The two countries were involved in a military conflict before a ceasefire was announced on May 10. What's Vindu Dara Singh's Next Project? The actor is set to appear in the comedy film Son of Sardaar 2, starring Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan and Sanjay Mishra. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the film is set to be released theatrically on August 1. The movie will also feature Mukul Dev posthumously. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Film ‘Udaipur Files' yet to be recertified by CBFC, producer tells Delhi HC

The Delhi high court on Monday refused to stall the release of the movie 'Udaipur Files', based on the 2022 brutal murder of a Rajasthan-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal, till July 30, noting that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is yet to recertify the film despite the Centre's suggested cuts being implemented. Poster of the movie 'Udaipur Files'. (Photo from X) The Centre had on July 21 cleared the movie's release, subject to the filmmaker carrying out six additional edits, in addition to the 55 cuts already implemented. A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Tushar Rao Gedela rejected the request to stay the film's release after petitioner, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani, sought a hearing on Wednesday, while co-petitioner Mohammed Javed, an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, requested a stay until then. The movie has been challenged for allegedly vilifying the Muslim community while Javed claims that his trial is at a crucial stage and the movie's release could prejudice his right to fair trial. The bench said that there was no urgency, since the movie could only be released pursuant to certification, which was yet to be granted. 'Please don't get overwhelmed. Argue the matter with ease. The movie will only be released after recertification. You (producer's counsel) say that it (recertification) is pending. As of today, there is no urgency. We can hear the matter the day after (on Wednesday). The film can only be exhibited after re-certification and thus there is no urgency,' the bench said to Javed's counsel Maneka Guruswamy. The petitions were listed before the high court, after the Supreme Court, while refusing to take a call on allowing the movie's release, had requested the Delhi high court to take up the matter on Monday. In its petition, argued by advocate Saumya Dwivedi, Javed asserted that the July 21 order was egregious since the Centre had simply accepted the recommendation of a committee comprising three advisory panel members from the CBFC, without any application of mind. It further stated that the procedure to constitute the Committee was based on a repealed law and was thus flawed. The Cinematograph Act, 1952, the petition stated, does not empower the CBFC to review its own decision. To be sure, the July 21 order was issued in response to the pleas filed by Madani and Javed, seeking cancellation of the film's certification, following the liberty granted by the high court on July 10. The high court on that day, had temporarily stayed the movie's release and allowed Madani to approach the Centre, regarding his concerns. 'The constitution of the committee by the Central Government, in the absence of any applicable provision, amounts to wrongful delegation of powers. The committee was the sole authority who heard and considered the submission of the parties, including the CEO of CBFC,' the petition stated. It added, 'Thereafter, the recommendation of this committee was accepted by the Central government without any application of mind and this amounts to CBFC adjudicating the validity of its own decision to certify the film for public exhibition.' Lal was murdered in June 2022 with a cleaver in Udaipur district of Rajasthan for allegedly sharing a social media post endorsing the disparaging remarks made against Prophet Muhammad by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma. She made the comments while participating in a television debate in May 2022. The assailants, who were arrested by the Rajasthan police, even prepared a video claiming responsibility for the murder. They even displayed the weapon of offence used for the crime. Considering the sensitivity of the case, the matter was probed by the National Investigation Agency and the accused was charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The trial in the case is pending before a special NIA court in Jaipur.
