Mercedes-AMG GT 63, GT 63 Pro launched in India: Gets a 4.0-litre V8

Time of Indiaa day ago

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new
Mercedes-AMG GT 63
and GT 63 Pro sports coupes in the Indian market priced at Rs 3 crore and Rs 3.65 crore, respectively (ex-showroom). Marking its comeback after a five-year absence, the latest iteration of the
high-performance grand tourer
steps in as a successor to the model that was phased out in 2020. Interested customers can book the cars online or by visiting their nearest dealership and the deliveries for the new GT 63 are scheduled to commence by late 2025, with a more powerful variant set to follow in early 2026.
Let's talk about the engine first, both GT 63 and 63 Pro are powered by a tried and tested hand-built 4.0-litre,
twin-turbo V8
engine pushing out 585hp and 800Nm of torque in GT 63, while the GT 63 Pro ups the ante with 612hp, an increase of 27hp and 850Nm, gaining an extra 50Nm over the standard version. Both cars come paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to all four wheels. The GT 63 sprints from
0 to 100kph
in 3.2 seconds, while the Pro variant shaves off a tenth of a second, achieving the same in 3.1 seconds when equipped with optional Cup 2R tyres. It also edges ahead in top speed, reaching 317kph, 2kph more than the standard model.
Mercedes-AMG is also offering a special
AMG GT 63 Pro Motorsport Collector's Edition
in very limited numbers. While mechanically identical to the Pro, this edition features exclusive paintwork and interior touches inspired by the brand's current Formula One race cars. In terms of design, the two-door performance coupe has received a comprehensive overhaul, starting with a larger footprint, it's now both wider and longer than before. A key change is the adoption of a 2+2 seating configuration, previously reserved for the four-door AMG GT, making the cabin more versatile. It features the signature AMG GT silhouette, but now sports fresh alloy wheel designs, redesigned headlamps, and a new active rear spoiler.
It also carries forward signature styling elements from its predecessor, such as the elongated bonnet, sweeping roofline, and sloping liftback tailgate. However, now the design has been sharpened with slimmer headlamps, a reworked front bumper, and cleaner surfacing. The Pro variant distinguishes itself with a more aggressive front end and unique alloy wheels.
Mercedes has integrated aerodynamic elements derived from Formula 1, including an active underbody profile that uses the Venturi effect to generate downforce at speeds over 100kph, effectively pulling the car closer to the road. Design-wise, the car avoids harsh creases, with flush door handles and a smooth silhouette. The flowing roofline leads into a broad, flat rear that houses sleek LED tail-lights connected by a darkened trim strip. A retractable rear spoiler, with five different angles, and a prominent rear diffuser with dual exhausts complete the performance-focused design.

Motor racing-Norris puts McLaren on pole in Austria, Piastri third

SPIELBERG, Austria -Lando Norris bounced back from his collision in Canada to put McLaren on pole position for the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix on Saturday while championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri qualified third. HT Image Ferrari's Charles Leclerc joined Norris on the front row with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth, raising the Italian team's hopes after a difficult weekend so far. Red Bull's Max Verstappen qualified only seventh at his team's home circuit after pulling out of his final flying effort when Alpine's Pierre Gasly spun at the last corner and briefly brought out yellow flags. Piastri was also forced to bale but had been slower than Norris in both of the first two phases. Norris, who needs a strong result after a collision with Piastri in Canada two weeks ago, is 22 points behind the Australian in the championship after 10 of 24 races. "I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well," said Norris. "A good day and it has been a good weekend for me so far, so hopefully we can keep it up." The pole was his third of the season and he won both of the previous two with fastest lap in Australia and Monaco. RED FLAG George Russell, last year's race winner, qualified fifth for Mercedes but faced an investigation for a potential unsafe release in the pitlane. Liam Lawson will line up sixth for Racing Bulls, ahead of Verstappen, with Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto making it into the final phase for the first time and qualifying eighth for Sauber. Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was ninth fastest for Mercedes and Gasly completed the top 10. The second phase of qualifying was red-flagged when the trackside grass at turn 10 caught fire, the latest of a series of such incidents. The governing FIA said the fire was caused by a car going off track, rather than by sparks from the titanium skid blocks, and carried out additional dampening of the grass before the final top 10 shootout. Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda and Williams' Carlos Sainz made early exits, neither getting through the opening phase. "There's damage in the car, for sure. The car is undriveable ... it's pulling under braking, no load in high speed," said Sainz, who qualified 19th with only Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg behind. He explained later that the team had put new brakes on the car for qualifying, as usual, but it started pulling to one side immediately. Tata Harrier EV vs Harrier Diesel: Is the Rs 1 lakh premium justified?

With the Tata Harrier EV finally launched, buyers are eager to know whether the electric SUV offers better value than its diesel-powered sibling. Priced at Rs 27.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec Empowered RWD variant, the Harrier EV costs roughly Rs 1 lakh more than the Harrier Fearless+ Stealth Edition automatic diesel, which is priced at Rs 26.50 lakh. Dimensions & Storage: Both SUVs are nearly identical in size, but the Harrier EV offers a slight edge with 57 litres more boot space and a frunk (front trunk) of up to 67 litres in the RWD version—something the diesel Harrier lacks entirely. Powertrain Comparison: The Harrier EV gets a 75 kWh battery delivering 238 PS of power and 315 Nm of torque, while the diesel Harrier produces 170 PS and 350 Nm with a 2.0-litre engine. Despite offering slightly less torque, the EV excels in power and offers an impressive claimed range of 627 km on a single charge. Feature Showdown: Both SUVs are well-equipped, but the Harrier EV brings a few extras: Larger 14.5-inch QLED infotainment touchscreen 540-degree camera with transparent terrain view Auto park assist and a digital IRVM with dashcam More powerful Dolby Atmos sound system Wing-type rear headrests and 'boss mode' for co-driver seat 65W fast charging USB-C ports and V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability Shared Features Include: Panoramic sunroof with voice assist Level-2 ADAS Ventilated front seats Dual-zone climate control Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay 360-degree cameras and 7 airbags Verdict: The Harrier EV offers significant improvements in power, tech, comfort, and storage. While its Rs 1 lakh premium over the diesel variant may raise eyebrows, the added features, electric performance, and long-range capability make it a well-rounded and future-ready SUV. Still, for those who frequently drive long distances or lack access to reliable EV infrastructure, the diesel Harrier remains a practical and proven option. But if you're ready to go electric, the Harrier EV more than justifies its premium.
