Arsenal agree €63.5m Viktor Gyökeres deal with Sporting with add-ons still being discussed

The Guardian11 hours ago
Arsenal have agreed to pay €63.5m (£55m) up front for Viktor Gyökeres and are close to a complete agreement with Sporting over the Sweden striker.
It is understood the clubs remain in negotiations over potential add-ons that could take the total cost of the deal close to €80m, with Arsenal believed to have offered a further €15m in performance-related bonuses for the 27-year-old. But with Gyökeres facing disciplinary action from Sporting after he missed his deadline to report for pre-season training on Saturday, there is confidence in both camps that an agreement will be reached and the deal is expected to be finalised in the coming days.
The Guardian understands that the agents involved in the transfer will not receive the customary commission – typically about 10% of the deal's total value – clearing the way for Sporting to receive a larger sum up front. If Arsenal had met Sporting's initial €70m asking price under standard terms, the Portuguese club would have netted roughly €63m after fees. Under the new arrangement, they will receive slightly more without losing a cut to intermediaries.
Tensions between Gyökeres and Sporting have grown in recent weeks as he has made no secret of his desire to join Arsenal. But their president, Frederico Varandas, had insisted they would not budge over their valuation of a player who scored 54 times in 52 games last season. He confirmed that Sporting intend to fine Gyökeres unless he can present a legitimate justification for his absence, such as medical grounds, extended leave authorised by the board or an urgent family matter.
'We are calm,' Varandas said on Saturday evening. 'Everything can be resolved with the close of the transfer window, a heavy fine and an apology to the group.' With reference to Arsenal he said: 'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value we are very comfortable with that for the next three years.'
Arsenal are also expected to make a new approach for Christian Mosquera this week after seeing their initial bid of £14m rejected by Valencia. The Spain Under-21 defender has already agreed personal terms for a move to the Emirates.
Leandro Trossard could be sold to help balance the books, with Bayern Munich the latest club to show an interest in him. The Belgium forward has also been linked with Fenerbahce and clubs in Saudi Arabia and is likely to cost around £20m.
Noni Madueke is close to finalising his £52m move from Chelsea to Arsenal and is set for his medical this week. The 23-year-old will sign a five-year contract.
Arsenal have also made progress in negotiations over a new contract for Ethan Nwaneri, who has attracted interest from Chelsea and clubs in Germany but is expected to join his fellow academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly in agreeing a deal to stay.

Minister wriggles on who will be hit by tax hikes as BoE chief warns firms are cutting jobs and hints interest rates will fall to prop up stalling economy

A Cabinet minister wriggled on who will bear the brunt of looming tax hikes today - as the Bank of England warned firms are cutting jobs. Treasury Chief Secretary Darren Jones dodged on what counted as a 'modest income' after promises that those workers would be protected. In a round of interviews, he also refused to say how the government will pay for U-turns on welfare curbs and restoring the winter fuel allowance. Instead he stressed that all policies will be 'fully funded' at the Budget - when analysts believe Chancellor Rachel Reeves could have to fill a £30billion black hole. The comments came as Bank governor Andrew Bailey hinted that interest rates will come down more quickly as businesses reel from eye-watering national insurance increases in the last fiscal package. He said companies are 'adjusting employment' as a result of the raid and Brits were 'also having pay rises that are possibly less than they would have been if the NICs change hadn't happened'. Mr Bailey told the Times the British economy was growing behind its potential and that 'slack' could help keep inflation down. Treasury Chief Secretary Darren Jones dodged on what counted as a 'modest income' after promises that those workers would be protected Your browser does not support iframes. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander yesterday declined to rule out tax increases this Autumn, saying the government would base its approach on 'fairness' and protect those on 'modest incomes' The base rate was held at 4.25 per cent, but the governor gave a strong indication that it might fall at the next review on August 7. 'I really do believe the path is downward,' Mr Bailey said. 'But we continue to use the words 'gradual and careful' because… some people say to me 'why are you cutting when inflation's above target?' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander yesterday declined to rule out tax increases this Autumn, saying the government would base its approach on 'fairness' and protect those on 'modest incomes'. That fuelled speculation about a 'wealth tax' - something Labour MPs have been baying for. Mr Jones said: 'I'm not going to define what a modest income is. But what I will tell you is what our manifesto said, which is that we're going to protect working people by not increasing the headline rates of income tax, VAT or national insurance.' The minister said it was 'normal' for businesses to make 'adjustments' to plans as a result of the NICs hike. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey hinted that interest rates will come down more quickly as businesses reel from eye-watering national insurance increases in the last fiscal package 'We've also seen the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs across the country, and it's normal for business to make adjustments to their plans, depending on the cost of business, in the normal way,' he said. 'But we're really focused as a Government in supporting business to create more jobs. 'That's why our plans to invest in the skills system, reducing energy bills for businesses, getting these trade deals across the line with the EU, India and the United States, for example, are all examples of the Government rolling up its sleeves to make sure that we're creating opportunities for businesses to grow and to be profitable in our country'.

Video transcript With Deborah Crannage, Tui training delivery manager and TTG Media's head of partner content Maddie Barber. Maddie: Welcome to our In The Spotlight video with Tui. So Deborah, let's start by talking about the lates market for summer 2025. Where do you have availability and where will agents be finding the best deals? Deborah: Thanks for that Maddie. We've got some amazing deals going on for the lates season. Customers are wanting to get booked up – July, August, being those key months. So our top destinations at the moment are all about Spain and the Canary Islands. Over 50% discounts on some of the properties in those destinations. If you're looking for a deal, start with them, definitely. Not only that though, we do have a promo code on selected hotels. So this is built into the system when agents go on, really easy to copy and paste the codes for those hotels and get savings up to £150. Get in there to get those deals and save a little bit of cash for your customers. Maddie: That's fantastic. And then thinking about your long-haul product specifically, what is the key highlights of that, and can you share any selling tips for long-haul? Deborah: Yeah, of course. So the key highlights I would definitely say is our direct flying routes. We are one of the biggest providers of those direct flights as a packaged holiday. So we've got the likes of Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean islands, all with our Dreamliner flying, and don't miss out with those winter routes as well. Because Thailand is growing massively as a key destination. So direct flying in the winter to Thailand, Gambia, India. Partner hotels is another key highlight. So we work with Rui, Karisma, Royalton to name a few, giving our customers those unique experiences. We work really hand-in-hand. And if agents and customers are looking for that little bit of inspiration, we do have the long-haul hub on our website. So, it really is a great guide whether you are a new agent looking for some inspiration to sell to your customers. It's a helping hand and it's giving you some inspiration of what to book and what's current. Definitely have a look at those. Maddie: That's great to know. Thank you. And can you fill us in on everything that agents need to know about Tui's winter 2026 launch? Deborah: Oh, yes. So that's really exciting. Launched earlier than ever before. We've got over 50 destinations and over 2,000 hotels going on sale. So that is all of our beach products, your holiday concepts, Tui Blue, Sensatori, Holiday Villages, all of those key booking ones are going on sale straight away. Then don't forget, we've got cities and tours on hand, and the important ones I would definitely say are our ones that customers need to get booked up in advance to spread the cost. So the likes of your weddings. Lapland – we've got a new destination – Arctic Lakeland, look out for that, it looks stunning. Definitely somewhere people can go and enjoy that really vibrant winter experience. So get that one on your social media for sure. And then also, we've got everything on offer for the free child spaces. Especially in the likes of Florida, where you need to save a few pounds. Yeah it's all happening for our winter launch. So definitely have a look at those pre-seasons. Maddie: Amazing. And you have your fantastic Tui Trade Hub now. Can you just remind us what agents can find on there and how they can access that? Deborah: Yeah, of course. I love the Trade Hub. It's the first chance we've actually had to get out to trade partners and offer them more resources, e-learnings, especially for brand-new-to-travel. But not only that, it is a one-stop-shop. At the moment we're building in some key highlights in there for agents. So, you've got your promo codes on there. You've also got your round-ups that's telling you all the newsletter information coming from Tui. We have resources for weddings, for tours. They've never had things like this before, they've always had to sit on a telephone line. So utilise this tool, the more you use it, the more we can add to it. Put your requests in of what you'd like to see on there. And of course, social media, we all have a bit of social, don't we? I just think, going on and being able to get on there, get your assets, all your key campaign messages and be able to advertise them is absolutely fantastic. Get signed up. Just type into Google 'Tui Trade Hub', it'll pop up. Registrations are accepted within usually 24 hours, so it's a really quick way to get in there and get that information. But yeah, please log on there. It's a fantastic site. Maddie: And finally, let's talk about the support that your trade relations team can offer agents. How are they supporting the trade? Deborah: Yeah, I'm really proud of our trade relations team. Over the last couple of years they've really got out there and made themselves known, and agents really do need to know that we are there to support their needs. We do want help them grow their business, especially obviously with Tui. And we do want to be in really close partnership with our agents. The on-the-road team are there. They'll pop in, do shop visits, they'll be at events, we can do them. Obviously, I'm there for the webinars to make sure they've got all of that product knowledge, and then our support team behind the scenes as well, making sure everything is running smoothly. So please reach out to us. That's what we're there for. We do want to be on hand for every trade agent out there, so they do feel like they've got that support. But not only that, we want to chat with you as well. We want to really get to know everybody out there. Yeah, definitely keep in contact with the trade relations team, and just going back to the Hub, if they do want to know the faces behind the names, they can pop on there and there's some beautiful pictures of our trade relations team so they can see them as well as obviously speak to them. Maddie: Perfect. Thank you so much for sharing all of that fantastic information, Deborah. And thank you agents for tuning in to watch our In The Spotlight video with Tui. Take care.

Women's Euro 2025 live: England handed key advantage after thrashing Wales to reach quarter-finals

England ran riot against Wales in their final Euro 2025 group stage match to ensure the Lionesses cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 win. The holders will play Sweden in a tough quarter-final next, but have landed on the kinder side of the draw by finishing the group stage as runners-up and they will avoid playing Spain until at least the final. England were prepared for a 'derby' against the tournament debutants Wales, who are the lowest-ranked team at the Euros, but Sarina Wiegman's produced a professional performance to ease past their opponents with all of Beth Mead, Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway and Aggie Beever-Jones grabbing goals. It capped an excellent recovery from the Lionesses after losing their opening game of the tournament to France, with a 4-0 win over the Netherlands and a 6-1 destruction of Wales setting up another push for the title. 'It probably was the best thing that could have happened to us as a team,' forward Mead said. 'I think it motivated us. We're now in a position where we're building quite nicely and hopefully we can continue that momentum now into the quarterfinals.' Who and when do England play next? Route to Women's Euro 2025 final England have successfully reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 after recovering from their opening defeat to France to finish as runners-up in Group D. The Lionesses faced the danger of an early elimination after their 2-1 defeat to France but bounced back to impressively defeat the Netherlands 4-0 a few days later. A 6-1 victory over Wales secured England's place in the knockout stages - even if a strong France team go through as Group D winners after avoiding defeat to the Netherlands and winning 5-2. England now know their path to the Euro 2025 final in Basel, and the Lionesses have actually landed on the opposite side of the draw as world champions Spain and cannot play the tournament favourites until the final. As one, Wales stood in front of their Red Wall in St Gallen, and there is certainly no disgrace in losing to England, France and the Netherlands in what was their major tournament debut. But England had to be ruthless, and a 6-1 win to finish the group stage sends a message. 'Sweden should be scared,' said Ella Toone, and this performance showed why as Sarina Wiegman's side returned to their destructive best with the biggest win of Euro 2025 so far. France's 5-2 comeback against the Netherlands ensured Sarina Wiegman's team finished second, to go into what looks like the more forgiving side of the draw. Sweden will, of course, offer a very tough quarter-final - especially after their own statement display against Germany - but there's no Spain there. It's much less open. The cheers that greeted the announcement of second place said enough. Wiegman won't allow any of that kind of thinking, as England more than displayed in this ruthless win over Wales. 'It's disappointing with that scoreline and we have to just keep learning and move on now and in the next campaigns keep moving forwards and keep getting to major tournaments,' she says. "This is the beginning of a journey for us and we have been here and played three of the best teams in the world and found how big that jump is. We have to keep investing and keep building to make sure this isn't just a one-off. "We can still celebrate being here and what it means for this nation and then we have to keep getting better. For me, I don't know right now. I don't know. "It is tough when you work so hard and you concede things you know are going to happen. It is hard sometimes to understand that in the game, and we have to get back to the drawing board. I am still really proud of this group,' she adds as she finishes. Chris Wilson13 July 2025 23:30 Wilkinson reacts Wales's goal difference of minus-11 is the worst in the history of the Women's Euros group stages. Wales boss Rhian Wilkinson says that the country have to continue to 'grow and learn'. "It is a hard one. We know this was not our game and we were outplayed and I was outcoached. It's a moment when you know you will take a lot from it. I wouldn't want to stand with any other team. There is a gap between us and the top teams, and that's my job, to try and close that gap,' she says. "I just want to thank the support. It was a tough game to stay loud and they did. We know we have got some work to do and this is not a team that is ready for tournament football too. I have got to be sharper too. "Grow and learn, that is what we have got to do.
