Nagaland cabinet likely to decide on reservation policy on Aug 6

Kohima, Aug 4 (PTI) In a significant development regarding the ongoing demand to review Nagaland's job reservation policy, the state cabinet is expected to take a final decision on Wednesday, sources said.
The information was conveyed during a meeting on Monday between the state's new Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, and representatives of the five Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) here.
The CoRRP represents five major Naga tribes — Ao, Sumi, Lotha, Rengma, and Angami — and was formed to push for a review of the state's reservation policy, which they describe as 'imbalanced and outdated." 'The meeting had a brief discussion on the core demands raised and the response of the state government so far. The chief secretary informed that the state cabinet will meet on August 6 and will take a final call on the core demands, including the framing of terms of reference and the composition of the commission within the next fortnight," the statement said.
In view of the assurance, the CoRRP has agreed to keep the proposed third phase of its agitation in abeyance, they said.
The push to review Nagaland's reservation policy intensified after the five tribal apex bodies under the banner of the 5-Tribes CoRRP submitted a joint memorandum to the state government.
They argued that the policy, which has been in place since 1977, no longer reflects the current socio-economic and educational realities of the various communities in the state.
Pressing for fulfillment of their demand, the committee conducted at least two phases of agitation – first on May 29 in the form of protest rallies across multiple district headquarters (Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha, Tseminyu, Zunheboto, Chümoukedima, Niuland).
The second phase was on July 9, thousands of people from the 5 tribes, young and old, man and women attired in traditional dresses staged a protest outside the Civil Secretariat.
Initially, 25 per cent reservation was allocated for seven tribes in non-technical and non-gazetted posts for a period of 10 years. These tribes were designated as 'backward' based on educational and economic disadvantages, and limited representation in state services.
Over the years, the reservation has increased to 37 per cent, comprising 25 per cent for seven Eastern Nagaland Backward Tribes and 12 per cent for four other backward tribes of the state. PTI NBS NBS MNB

He noted that arrests have occurred in Lahore and Rawalpindi, though he did not provide specific numbers. Bukhari criticised the preemptive crackdown, saying, 'Their crime? Dare to state a protest, which is yet to happen. That's not lawful, that's tyranny.' The Express Tribune reported that the PTI, under the TTAP banner, is preparing to launch a significant protest movement. At an emergency press conference on Sunday at the PTI District Secretariat in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), TTAP Secretary General Asad Qaiser outlined the plans. 'On August 5, a nationwide protest will be held under the flags of Pakistan, the PTI, and the white flag of peace,' Qaiser announced, stressing that the protests would remain peaceful and within the bounds of Pakistan's constitution and laws. Qaiser highlighted the significance of the date, marking two years since Khan's 'illegal' arrest, and called for transparent legal proceedings. 'If there is any evidence against Khan, then it should be presented in an open court,' he urged. He praised Khan as a transformative leader, stating, 'Imran Khan is the most popular and dignified leader of this nation, who not only elevated Pakistan's image internationally but also gave the nation a vision.' Qaiser added that Khan's detention represents a 'direct attack on democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.' PTI planning district-level protests Rather than organising a centralised rally in Islamabad, the PTI has opted for district-level protests across the country, following Khan's instructions. In Peshawar and Khyber districts, a rally led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will commence at 3:30 pm from Hayatabad Toll Plaza on Ring Road and proceed to Qila Bala Hisar. In Swabi, protesters will gather at the Ambar Interchange for a day-long demonstration starting at 3:30 pm and continuing until Isha (evening) prayers. In Nowshera, a protest is planned at Khairabad, also beginning at 3:30 pm. NCERT Class 8 Textbook Under Scrutiny After Former Royal Family Member Raises Objection

The Class 8 Social Science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has faced criticism after a former member of Jaisalmer's royal family highlighted a historical inaccuracy in one of its maps. On Monday evening, Chaitanya Raj Singh, a member of Jaisalmer's former royal family, took to social media platform 'X' to denounce the map on page 71 of Unit 3 of the NCERT textbook. He argued that the map incorrectly portrays Jaisalmer as part of the historical Maratha Empire, labeling the claim as 'factless, historically misleading, and seriously objectionable." He stressed that such factual inaccuracies in educational materials undermine the credibility of national institutions and insult the legacy of those who defended the state's sovereignty and pride through generations. 'The map shown in the NCERT Social Science textbook for Class 8 (Unit 3, page number 71) depicts Jaisalmer as a part of the then Maratha Empire, which is historically misleading, factually baseless, and deeply objectionable. Such unverified and historically unsubstantiated information not only raises questions about the credibility of institutions like NCERT but also hurts our glorious history and public sentiments," he posted on X. 'This is not just a matter of factual correction but is connected to our historical dignity, self-respect, and the integrity of the national curriculum.
