Rotana expands into Africa, Iraq with six new hotels

Trade Arabia06-05-2025
Rotana, the Middle East's leading hospitality management company, has announced a strategic expansion into Africa and emerging markets, with six new properties set to open in Ghana, Kenya, Benin, and Iraq.
Unveiled at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, this announcement reflects Rotana's commitment to growing its footprint in underserved, high-potential destinations.
The new properties include full-service hotels, branded residences, and midscale concepts — all aligned with Rotana's asset-light, partner-driven development model, which facilitates sustainable growth across diverse markets.
'Africa is incredibly important to us,' said Philip Barnes, Chief Executive Officer of Rotana. 'It's a region full of opportunity, energy, and untapped potential. We're entering these markets with confidence and care, ready to build lasting partnerships and deliver the kind of hospitality people can count on.'
Eddy Tannous, Chief Operating Officer at Rotana, added: 'What sets us apart in these markets is not just our systems or our brand portfolio — it's our approach. Our teams and I work closely with our partners throughout the entire development lifecycle, from concept to opening. This hands-on commitment, combined with our regional expertise, gives owners confidence and ensures we deliver not only consistency but local relevance and long-term value.'
In support of these openings, Rotana will extend its enhanced loyalty program, Rotana Discovery, across all new markets. Expected to be fully integrated with the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) by the end of 2025, the platform will connect Rotana guests to a global network of over 30 million members, delivering increased reach, recognition, and value for both travellers and owners.
Ghana – Accra: Rotana will debut in Ghana with the launch of Rotana Accra, a 220-key, full-service hotel situated in the city's diplomatic and commercial district. This flagship opening will serve business travellers, international organisations, and regional visitors in one of West Africa's most important capital cities.
Additional projects in Ghana are currently under discussion, reinforcing Rotana's long-term commitment to the country as a key market in its Africa growth strategy.
Benin – Cotonou: Rotana's first Francophone West Africa project, the 185-key Rotana Cotonou, will cater to business and MICE segments in Benin's commercial capital.
Kenya – Nairobi: Two properties in Upper Hill, Rotana Nairobi (200 keys) and Arjaan Nairobi (100 keys), will cater to corporate, diplomatic, and healthcare-related travellers in East Africa's economic powerhouse.
Iraq: A Reinvestment in Regional Growth
Rotana is furthering its investment in Iraq with two midscale hotels designed to serve domestic and regional business travellers:
• Centro Baghdad (Miraj) – 210 keys
• Centro Green Zone Baghdad – 150 keys
Both properties reflect Rotana's confidence in Iraq's evolving hospitality landscape and the brand's ability to deliver consistent performance in complex markets.
Looking Ahead
Rotana's global expansion strategy emphasises agility, local relevance, and commercial resilience. Each of these six projects is developed in partnership with trusted local stakeholders and tailored to meet the specific needs of the local community.
'This is the future of Rotana,' added Barnes. 'Agile, ambitious, and built around the real needs of our partners and our guests. We're growing in the places that matter most.' -TradeArabia News Service

Dubai Property Demand Rises Among Global Investors

A Dubai-based property developer has reported growing international interest in the emirate's real estate market following a series of roadshows conducted over the past 12 months. Object 1, part of the international TSZ Group, held more than 100 events across Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, uncovering trends around investor motivations and market shifts as global appetite for Dubai property continues to grow. The roadshows revealed that decision-making factors among investors included potential for return on investment, flexible payment plans, quality furnishing, and access to modern amenities and smart home technology. Demand was observed from investors in Iran, Turkey, and India, as well as from Francophone and German-speaking regions. Africa has emerged as a market with engagement levels. Object 1's data showed that most investors were driven by portfolio diversification, with commitments starting from $300,000 for one- or two-bedroom apartments. First-time buyers in Dubai typically chose studio units, while high-net-worth individuals showed interest in larger residences within premium developments. International buyers demonstrated interest in residences with European finishes, with many citing home appliances by European brands as a value-add. This reflects a shift in the perception of Dubai property, where quality, design, and convenience are becoming as important as location and price. 'Based on the insights we gathered during our roadshows, we are now refining our international strategy for the year ahead. We plan to increase our focus on markets that have shown strong engagement, while continuing to prioritise India, Singapore, and the UK. This approach is supported by the results we have seen so far, including a 220 per cent increase in our sales value and a 140 per cent increase in sales volume in Q1 2025 compared to the same period last year,' Ismail Gasanov, Head of Business Development at Object 1 said. The findings showed North America has recently entered Object 1's top ten global markets, driven by a shift in outbound capital from the US and Canada toward high-growth international destinations. Object 1 attributes much of its international success to collaborations with real estate agencies and local market experts. These partnerships have enabled the company to adapt its outreach to suit regional investor expectations, resulting in higher-quality engagement and event outcomes. Looking ahead, Object 1 plans to continue its international outreach through a new phase of roadshows, private investor events, and market-specific campaigns. The company remains focused on its core mission of developing future-ready, high-quality communities that deliver long-term value to both residents and investors while contributing to the next chapter of Dubai's real estate landscape. Tamil Group Aids Worker

TDT | Manama A stranded Indian worker who lost his job and faced visa issues has safely returned to Tamil Nadu, thanks to swift support from Bahrain's Tamil community and coordination with the Indian Embassy. Mr Murugesan, a native of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu, had been working in Bahrain for seven years before recently losing his job. With his visa renewal stalled and no income or accommodation, he found himself in a desperate situation. His case came to the attention of the Indian Embassy, which reached out to Annai Tamil Mandram (ATM), a community group known for supporting Tamil-speaking expatriates in Bahrain, ATM officials said. The group responded quickly, arranging food, shelter, and beginning the process of resolving his legal and immigration issues. Working closely with the Indian Embassy and with support from Bahraini authorities, the volunteers helped clear fines, resolve Mr Murugesan's visa complications, and arranged a flight ticket for his return home. He departed Bahrain on Saturday night after all formalities were completed. Leaders from the group expressed gratitude to the Bahrain government, the Indian diplomatic mission, and the individuals who helped fund and facilitate the process. Annai Tamil Mandram operates a round-the-clock helpline for the Tamil community in Bahrain.

Tourism spending in the Middle East is projected to reach $350bln by 2030, according to a new travel industry report

A new report compiled by Tourism Economics on behalf of Arabian Travel Market (ATM) predicts that by 2030, total tourism spend in the Middle East will be 50% higher than in 2024, generating expenditure of nearly US$350 billion. The ATM Travel Trends Report 2025 reveals insights into the trends and transformations redefining the travel sector in the Middle East and worldwide, including the surge of business travel, the growth of the luxury segment, and the boom in regional sports tourism. The report highlights exceptional growth in Middle East travel spending, projected to exceed 2019 levels by 54% this year and anticipates an annual growth rate of over 7% from 2025 to 2030. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: 'The report's findings confirm that travel growth in the Middle East is incredibly strong, with annual growth averaging more than 7% through 2030. Bold national visions, game-changing developments, and enhanced connectivity are some of the key factors driving this momentum.' Underscoring the Middle East's strong position in global tourism, inbound travel from outside the region is set to grow by 13% annually up to 2030 and outbound business travel forecast to surge at 9% per year. European source markets make up 50% of all leisure travel to the Middle East, with India and the United Kingdom the top two inbound international leisure source markets. China is also a critical market, ranking third by value with leisure spend expected to increase by 130% by 2030. Furthermore, tourism nights by visitors from Asia Pacific and Africa, are expected to increase by over 100% between now and 2030. For outbound travel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt dominate regional flows, while Thailand and the United Kingdom lead as preferred long-haul destinations. The four largest airlines in the region – Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Saudia – have placed nearly 780 aircraft orders with Boeing and Airbus, representing major expansions to their existing fleets. This significant investment underscores the region's strategic focus on becoming a global aviation hub and meeting rising passenger demand over the coming decade. The Middle East's rise as a global hub for business events is another key highlight of the report, which states that spending on Middle East business travel will grow 1.5 times faster than the global average through to 2030. The region's strategic location at the centre of Asia, Africa, and Europe supports business and leisure travel, with the latter on a particularly strong trajectory for growth. The sector plays a vital role in developing the region's reputation for hosting major events. It is expected to experience the second-fastest rate of business travel growth among all global regions, underscoring the increased potential for combining business and leisure travel, or 'bleisure'. Curtis commented: 'At ATM 2025, we recognised the industry's hunger for innovation in travel technology as well as the rising demand for business travel across the region. In response, we launched two dynamic new zones, IBTM@ATM and the Innovation Zone, designed to empower our growing audience to shape the future of travel with the speed and scale our exciting industry demands.' The region is also witnessing unprecedented growth in luxury and lifestyle tourism, attracting a new generation of high-net-worth travellers, drawn to exceptional Middle East hospitality, curated experiences and premium cultural events. According to the report global spending on luxury leisure hospitality is expected to continue growing briskly reaching over US$390 billion by 2028. 'Travellers drawn to the Middle East tend to spend more on travel overall, nearly 60% habitually spending on luxury experiences while travelling compared to under 40% among travellers who favour other destinations,' added Curtis. Of the more than 170 luxury hotel properties in the Middle East, nearly 100 are situated Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with 22 currently in development. With several luxury properties in the pipeline among Saudi Arabia's Giga projects, the region will continue to serve as a preferred destination for luxury and leisure travellers. Following in the footsteps of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and Dubai Expo 2020, the Middle East region has a proven track record for successfully hosting high-profile entertainment and sports events. According to the ATM Travel Trends report, the strong appetite for sports tourism in the region will lead to a potential growth rate of 63% in the coming years, with the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia set to continue this momentum. According to the report, golf, motorsports, football, cycling, and esports are all benefiting from heightened visibility and investment in the region. This surge in sporting and entertainment events is significantly boosting the travel industry, driving increased demand for hotel stays, flights, and related services, creating a ripple effect that supports broader tourism growth. ATM is the leading international travel and tourism event held annually in Dubai. It plays a vital role in shaping the future of global travel. Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the 2025 edition welcomed over 55,000 industry professionals from 166 countries, achieving year-on-year growth of 16%. The next edition will take place from 4-7 May 2026. To view the report, please click here.
