Zoho unveils foundational LLM ‘Zia', alongside enterprise AI agents and speech recognition tech

Zoho has jumped into the AI race with its first proprietary large language model (LLM) that is designed for enterprise use cases such as structured data extraction, summarisation, code generation, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
Zia LLM was built completely in-house by leveraging NVIDIA's AI accelerated computing platform, the enterprise software company said in a press release on Thursday, July 17. The LLM is made up of three underlying base models in varying sizes: 1.3 billion, 2.6 billion, and 7 billion parameters. The parameter count of an AI model reflects its capacity to learn and generate complex responses.
Each of the models were 'separately trained' and 'optimised for contextual applicability that benchmark competitively against comparable open source models in the market,' as per Zoho.

The move comes months after the company abandoned its $700 million plan to foray into chip manufacturing after struggling to find the right technology partner to aid in the complex chip-making processes. It also comes at a time when the Indian government is looking to develop a domestic LLM of its own. The IT Ministry has short-listed four startups, Sarvam AI, Soket AI Labs, Gnani.ai and Gan.ai, to build a foundational AI model under the Rs 10,300 crore-IndiaAI mission.
'Today's announcement emphasizes Zoho's longstanding aim to build foundational technology focused on protection of customer data, breadth and depth of capabilities, and value. Because Zoho's AI initiatives are developed internally, we are able to provide customers with cutting-edge tool sets without compromising data privacy and organisational flexibility, democratising the latest technology on a global scale,' Mani Vembu, CEO of Zoho, said in a statement.
Zia LLM is currently undergoing internal testing and will be available to customers in the coming months. It will be deployed across Zoho's data centres in the US, India, and Europe, the company said. It has not revealed the pricing of these AI offerings.
Aside from its in-house LLM, Zoho also announced it has developed two new Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models capable of converting speech to text using AI. It currently only works for English and Hindi, with support for additional languages coming in the future.
In terms of performance, Zoho said that the ASR models scored 75 per cent better than comparable models across standard benchmarks. It also said the data of customers using Zia LLM will be stored on Zoho servers and will not be sent to external AI cloud providers.
Zoho is further rolling out over 25 ready-to-deploy AI-powered agents capable of undertaking various business activities and handling relevant actions related to sales development, customer support, account management, revenue growth, deal analysis, and candidate screening.
These pre-built AI agents can be deployed by customers using Zoho's Agent Marketplace. It has also upgraded its AI agent building platform called Zia Agent Studio, launched earlier this year, to include ready-made access to over 700 actions across Zoho's products. In addition, Zoho has adopted the model context protocol (MCP) which lets customers tap into third-party AI agents as well.
Moving forward, Zoho plans to develop an AI reasoning model along with expanding the available languages used by its speech-to-text models.

Public-private partnership: How Piprahwa Gems returned to India

The Piprahwa Gems, Buddhist relics which in 1898 were taken by an Englishman from their resting place in India, have been brought back to the country, the Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday. This return was made possible by 'an exemplary case of public-private partnership,' Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Wednesday. Here's the story In May, a collection of 349 gemstones came up for auction at Sotheby's Hong Kong. These were a part of a larger collection of antiquities unearthed in 1898 by William Claxton Peppé, an English estate manager, at a Buddhist stupa in Piprahwa, a village in UP's Siddharthnagar district, near the border of Nepal. Viceroy Elgin donated the sacred bones and ashes in the collection, believed to be of Lord Buddha himself, to Siamese King Rama V. Much of the remaining collection, including caskets, a coffer, and various jewels, were sent to the Imperial Museum (now Indian Museum) in Kolkata, where they remain till date. But a part of the collection was passed down for generations in the Peppé family. In 2013, they came in possession of Chris Peppé who decided to put the antiquities up for auction. Sotheby's listed an estimated selling price of over $100 million. On May 5, the Ministry of Culture served a legal notice to Sotheby's and the Peppé family, demanding the 'immediate cessation' of the auction, and repatriation of the relics to India. The Archaeological Survey of India too requested the Consulate General of Hong Kong to immediately stop the auction. Pressure from New Delhi prompted Sotheby's to halt the auction, originally slated for May 7. But India's legal claim over the Piprawaha gems fell in a grey area. This is because the relics were excavated by Peppé on land allocated to him by the British government, and privately held for 127 years by his family, making it difficult to prove the illegality of their possession. Also, the gemstones were taken out of India long before India's Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972 came into being. Nonetheless, New Delhi kept pressure up on Sotheby's, the UK, and the Peppé family. The Ministry asked the Financial Investigation Unit to coordinate with its counterpart in Hong Kong to highlight the alleged illegality of the auction and ensure compliance with international laws. In the end, the collection of 349 gemstones was acquired by Indian industrialist Pirojsha Godrej for an undisclosed amount. While unconventional, this allowed the government to not have to make a commercial transaction for the antiquities, which would have raised ethical issues. Godrej has agreed to loan a 'large portion' of the collection to the National Museum for a period of five years, and display the entire collection for three months upon its arrival, Shekhawat said.

File image/ Reuters Thousands of license applications by US companies to export goods and technology around the globe, including to China, are in limbo because turmoil at the agency in charge of approving them has left it nearly paralyzed, two sources said. While US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has become a familiar face touting President Donald Trump's tariff and trade deals, sources said the export bureau under Lutnick's command has failed to issue expected new rules, stifled communications with industry representatives, pushed out experts, and lost staff through buyouts and resignations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Shipments of artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia to China are the most high-profile example of licenses not being swiftly approved. The company said July 14 the government assured it licenses would be granted for its H20 chip, and it hoped to start deliveries soon. Lutnick and other officials confirmed sales would be allowed. But sources said this week no licenses have yet been issued, and billions of dollars of AI chip orders are at stake. One US official said the backlog of license applications is the lengthiest in more than three decades. A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment. The Department of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment. The turmoil and resulting inaction at an agency tasked with promoting overseas trade and safeguarding American technology are alarming both those seeking tougher restrictions on exports to China and companies trying to sell their wares abroad. 'Licensing is how the US does business and competes globally,' said Meghan Harris, who served on the National Security Council in the first Trump administration and has worked at Commerce. 'Delays and unpredictability put us at an unnecessary disadvantage.' The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security averaged 38 days per export license application in fiscal year 2023, the most recent data available, denying 2% of 37,943 applications. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The license process enforces US export restrictions in an effort to make sure sensitive goods and technology do not reach countries or entities whose use of the items could harm US national security. Some staff have criticized Jeffrey Kessler, who became BIS undersecretary in March, saying he has micromanaged the bureau and failed to communicate adequately. Kessler did not respond to a request for comment. At a staff meeting soon after he took office, Kessler urged BIS staff to limit communications with company representatives and industry officials, according to two additional sources, who said he later asked for all meetings to be entered on a spreadsheet. Getting approval from Kessler's office to attend meetings with other government agencies has also been tricky, those sources said. Sources spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Frustration among exporters Frustration is growing within US industry. 'We're seeing whole sectors where there is no movement or indication if or when licenses will be issued," including license applications for semiconductor manufacturing equipment worth billions of dollars, said Sean Stein, president of the US-China Business Council. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While the clock is ticking on license applications, 'Chinese companies are exploring and doing deals with suppliers in China and other countries,' he said. 'The longer we have the delay, the more market share we're going to lose." Jim Anzalone, president of Compliance Assurance, a Florida-based trade consultancy, said he has seen delays in license approvals for sensors, radars, and sonar to Latin America and other parts of the world. 'There's nothing official about what the policy is and when the backlog would be cleared,' he said. He has received denials sporadically after submitting some two dozen applications months ago to export semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, including four denials on Wednesday, he added. Sources stressed that some licenses are getting approved, especially exports to allied countries, and they noted that some communication with companies continues, especially around license applications. Commerce is also delaying regulatory changes. The agency said in May it would rescind and replace a Biden administration rule before it went into effect that month restricting where AI chips can be exported, but the agency has not done so yet. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Other rules, which sources said have been drafted for months, have not been published, including one to expand export restrictions to subsidiaries of companies already banned from receiving controlled US exports. Meanwhile, important staff vacancies such as China-based export control officers have not been filled, and high-level career employees have resigned. A retirement party was held this week for Dan Clutch, acting director of the BIS Office of Export Enforcement, the latest experienced staff member to leave.
