Gangs use dangerous new tactic to smuggle Channel migrants
In an official update, Frontex, which has committed aerial surveillance and extra staff to the Channel, said smuggling networks providing the small boats were adapting their tactics in order to increase the number of successful crossings.
They have already switched to using 'taxi boats' where dinghies are sailed from inland rivers and waterways to pick up migrants in the shallow waters off the beaches.
But Frontex said the smuggling gangs were also using 'simultaneous departures'.
It said: 'This tactic puts more lives at risk in an already dangerous stretch of water as it hinders the search and rescue efforts of the national authorities.'
The risks are compounded by the increasing numbers of migrants being crammed into the flimsy dinghies. There were 54 migrants per boat in the year ending March 2025, compared with 50 in 2024 and 29 in the year to March 2022, according to Home Office data.
According to estimates by the UN's International Organisation for Migration, a record 82 migrants including 14 children died in attempts to cross the Channel in 2024. Although, officials believe this is an underestimate with dozens more reported missing over the year. At least 12 have died so far this year.
Some 14,812 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year in more than 260 boats, up nearly 32 per cent on the same period last year. It represents a record high for the first six months of any year since the first boats arrived in 2018.
On Wednesday, dozens of migrants in small boats reached the UK as people smugglers took advantage of the first good weather and calmer seas since May 31 when a record 1,195 people were intercepted. It is expected to push crossings past 15,000 for 2025.
French police are currently preparing to intercept migrant boats at sea for the first time and have committed six new patrol boats to the naval forces that will serve to rescue migrants and target the 'taxi boats'.
The French interior ministry says it will aim to intercept boats within 300 metres of the beaches to stop them leaving for the UK loaded with migrants.
Until now, the French have refused to intervene in the water because they claim maritime laws prevent them from taking action that could put lives at sea at risk.
But government sources said ministers overseeing migration policy had given the green light to do so while 'respecting' the 'law of the sea'.
The surge in crossings across the Channel come despite a drop in migrants coming into Europe from the east and the west.
The number of people coming into Europe via eastern Mediterranean routes fell by 30 per cent to 15,600 in the first five months of this year.
The number coming from western Africa was down 35 per cent to 11,065, while routes through the western Balkans dropped by 56 per cent to 4,055.
The biggest migrant route – across the central Mediterranean from Libya and northern Africa to Italy – remained constant, with an increase of seven per cent to 22,675. This was similar to the western Mediterranean into Spain route which saw a six per cent rise to 5,058.
Frontex attributed the decrease in the western African route to 'stronger border controls and migration policies in Mauritania, poor weather conditions, and enhanced cooperation between the EU and countries of departure.'
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: '15,000 illegal Channel crossings and its only June – 2025 is the worst year ever for small boat crossings so far.
'While traffickers and criminal gangs rake in millions, Labour Ministers stand in Westminster rehearsing soundbites. This is a total collapse of border control.
'How many more records does Keir Starmer need to break before he finally admits his plan is failing? He should never have scrapped the removals deterrent the previous Conservative Government put in place.
'Only the Conservatives have a serious, deliverable plan to end ECHR obstructions, introduce a binding annual cap on migration, implement measures to actually deter these crossings, and restore control of who comes into this country. Britain cannot wait any longer.'

In total, incidents were reported relating to 1,583 club and international matches in England and Wales during the season, representing half of the total number played and up from 1,341 games in 2023-24, although three quarters of them were viewed as 'low severity'. The most common incident type reported was hate crime - at 420 matches - followed by 363 games where missiles were alleged to have been thrown and 319 where fans displayed pyrotechnics. They included 287 claims of racial-related abuse and 140 of homophobia. But online hate crimes fell, with 212 recorded offences compared to 322 in the previous season. Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson said: 'Police up and down the country work incredibly hard to ensure football stadiums are safe, so we can all enjoy our national game. 'The statistics show that these efforts are paying off and strong action is being taken to stop violence and disorder from ruining football. 'We are continuing to make football safer for the millions of dedicated fans, funding the UK Football Policing Unit and expanding drug testing on arrest at football matches for certain offences.'

Footage shows Emma Van Der Hoek getting her phone wrestled off her by a man in a dark tracksuit who ran away after prizing it out of her hands. She was walking on the corner of Sotheby Road and Highbury Park along the path on her phone when the thief attacked her. Emma tries to chase after the man but he was able to sprint around the corner as another man followed him. She wrote: 'My phone got stolen yesterday in London!!! This is the second time in three months that this has happened – all within my so called 'safe' neighbourhood.' But she was then subject to online abuse, with trolls blaming her for the robbery. Some 78,000 people had phones or bags stolen from them on British streets in the year to March 2024. That is a rise of more than 150% on the 31,000 'snatch thefts' in the 12 months before, according to data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales. Figures also show that four in five police investigations were closed before a suspect was even found and just 0.8% of 'theft from the person' complaints resulted in a charge. This week the Met announced they managed to arrest 10 people involved in phone snatching gangs with their new Flying Squad. On Thursday, 19 June eight men, aged between 20 and 31, and two 17-year-old boys were arrested at addresses in London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery. Detective Chief Inspector Laura Hillier, who is leading the investigation from the Met's Flying Squad, said: 'Phone robbery has boomed globally, and London is not immune. Putin's escalating use of chemical weapons should terrify us all
As president Trump gives Putin 50 days to stop the fighting and come to the peace negotiation table, the Ukrainian frontlines are experiencing an uptick in the use of chemical weapons, according to the EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas. She was speaking in Brussels, and cited German and Dutch intelligence reports showing that Moscow has used chemical weapons at least 9,000 times since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine – and was now ramping up their use. 'As the intelligence services are saying this is intensifying, I think it's [Russia's use of chemical weapons] of great, great concern,' Kallas said. 'It shows that Russia wants to cause as much pain and suffering so that Ukraine would surrender. And, you know, it's really … unbearable.' The intelligence services report and my own investigations have confirmed the use of chloropicrin, one of the first chemical weapons developed in WWI. This is a choking agent and designed as an incapacitant, but it has proved morbidly effective at killing the Ukraine defenders by flushing them out of trenches and foxholes to be killed in the open by artillery and direct fire. This is the only way Russian invaders have managed to make any progress in the last few months. My concern is that with only 50 days for the Russians to make significant progress in this war, before the date Trump says he will impose devastating tariffs on Putin, they will escalate to far more deadly chemical weapons which could kill thousands. There is credible, if unverified, evidence that Lewisite and possibly nerve agents have also been used by Russian forces. We know the Russians have a chemical weapons programme to develop Novichok nerve agents, the most deadly chemicals ever made on the planet, and used by the Russian secret service to try and assassinate double agent Sergei Skripal in my home city of Salisbury in 2018 – a year after the Russians declared to the UN they had destroyed all their chemical weapons. If the Russians used Novichok, and why would they not, with the apparent indifference from the West and the UN to their use of other chemical weapons, they could kill thousands and possibly take huge tracts of Ukraine in the next 50 days. This would likely be far more effective than a tactical nuclear strike, and without the massive and prolonged contamination issues associated with nuclear fallout which would make the land uninhabitable for years – even to Russians. We urgently need an 'Obama' red line, or rather a solid 'Trump' red line, to ensure that Putin does not use his most deadly chemical weapons to try and take Ukraine this summer. The 'coalition of the willing' in Europe must also do the same to show a unified front to convince the Kremlin that a ceasefire and peace are their only viable options. By ignoring the Obama red line in Syria in 2013, when Assad murdered over 1400 of his own people with the nerve agent Sarin, we enabled proliferation of these abhorrent weapons. Putin saw the West's indifference in 2013 and is presumably the reason he is using them now. They are morbidly brilliant, abhorrent and completely indiscriminate. But if you have no morals or scruples – and Putin has neither – you would use them all the time. Trump can stop their use with a solid red line, and then we all must review the Chemical Weapons Convention and ensure that it is rigorously policed to remove all chemical weapons from the planet. This was what the convention was supposed to do in 1997 when most nations in the world, including the Russians, signed it.
