No pay for months, Karnataka NREGA contract staff on protest leave

MYSURU: Nearly 4,000 contractual staff with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme have not been paid for the last five to seven months.
Though the staff, who are responsible for creating employment in rural areas under the programme, have approached top officials and appealed for the payment of pending salaries, nothing has been done.
The staff that have not been paid include engineers, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) workers and field staff.
With no sign of salaries, they have resorted to a protest and applied for mass casual leave, boycotting work. They have also staged demonstrations in front of zilla panchayat offices across the state. The tragic story is the same even in Mysuru, the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
These coordinators are crucial in ensuring that the rural folk get 100 days of employment per year under the scheme.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has written to Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for urgent intervention for the immediate release of pending wages, material and administrative funds to ensure livelihoods of lakhs of scheme beneficiaries and maintenance of administrative efficiency.
The lack of funds has affected routine operations, supervision and ground-level implementation.

The Congress MP said on Tuesday that there wasn't going to be any change in the state leadership for will likely buy some time for Siddaramaiah to fulfil his ambition to script history as Karnataka's longest-serving CM. He needs to sit tight on the chair till January 6, 2026, for that. Urs, also from the Congress, was the Karnataka CM for a total of seven years and 238 days. The longest continuous term he served in the office was 5 years and 285 had told a Kannada news channel in February about his desire to be the longest-serving Karnataka CM, according to a report in the Deccan life and circumstances of Siddaramaiah also has uncanny parallels to that of Urs, whose record he wants to was, in fact, the first chief minister after Mysore was renamed Karnataka in AND URS: BACKWARD COMMUNITY LEADERSThe political history of Karnataka, or Mysore, after the state's reorganisation in 1956 has been dominated by two major communities -- Lingayats and Urs became Karnataka's first backward-class chief minister in 1972. Urs belonged to the Arasu caste, whose population in Karnataka was just 40,000 in 2012, according to the state's law minister S Suresh Urs became the CM, the majority of the chief ministers of the state were from the Lingayat and Vokkaliga largely as the leader of backward and minority communities, Urs formulated a political terminology in Karnataka Politics -- 'Ahinda' (Kannada Acronym for Minorities, Backward Community, and Dalits). He tried to uplift the backward communities in Karnataka and inspired others from these communities to become leaders. After Urs, Karnataka witnessed several CMs from the backward communities, including Sarekoppa Bangarappa, M Veerappa Moily and like Urs, Siddaramaiah is also regarded as the leader of backward and minority belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community with a population of 43,72,847, according to the 2011 Socio-Economic and Caste has breathed new life into Urs' Ahinda Urs, who broke into the Lingayat- and Vokkaliga-dominated political sphere, Siddaramaiah disrupted the power game as leaders from the two communities started to occupy the CM's chair with the alliance between the BJP and the JD(S) in became the CM in 2013 for the first the 2018 Assembly election, the Congress returned to power with JD(S) as the junior coalition partner but offered the CM's post to HD Kumaraswamy. With some Congress MLAs joining the BJP, the Congress-JD(S) combine lost URS, SIDDARAMAIAH DEALT WITH PARTY FEUDBoth Urs and Siddaramaiah engaged in a power tussle within the party with former prime protested against then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's imposition of the Emergency in 1975. The friction led to his ouster from Congress in Minister Siddaramaiah was from former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's JD(S). Their synergy and grassroots work saw the JD(S) develop into a strong regional the relationship turned sour in 2005 when Siddaramaiah was the deputy CM in the JD(S)-Congress parties had agreed on power-sharing on a rotational basis. Fearing not getting the CM's chair, Siddaramaiah tried to strengthen the Ahinda forces. Deve Gowda asked Siddaramaiah to step down from the deputy CM post. Siddaramaiah, claiming that he was expelled from the JD(S) by Deve Gowda, joined the Congress in BIGGEST VICTORIES CAME UNDER URS, SIDDARAMAIAHThe Congress in Karnataka witnessed its biggest victories -- in terms of seat count and vote share -- under the leadership of Urs and the leaders have proved to be crowd-pullers in the 1972 Assembly election, the Urs-led Congress garnered 165 of the 216 seats, with a whopping 52.17% vote Siddaramaiah's leadership in 2023, the Congress won 135 of the 224 seats, gaining a majority with a 42.88% vote share. Karnataka: Siddaramaiah slams railway fare hike, says common man will bear the brunt

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 2 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised the Centre for increasing railway fares, saying it would burden students, daily wage workers, small traders, and the common man, while accusing the BJP of double standards for protesting against state government policies but remaining silent on the Centre's decision. 'Railway fares hiked!! Who bears the brunt? The daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man struggling under rising prices,' Siddaramaiah said in his X post on Tuesday. Demanding an immediate rollback of the hike, Siddaramaiah said he stood with the people of Karnataka and the country who are forced to pay more for essential travel. 'This fare hike must be rolled back immediately. Don't make people's daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run, not the people's patience,' he said. He took a swipe at the Karnataka unit of the BJP, saying the party had no problem protesting against milk price hikes meant to help farmers but stayed silent on a decision that burdens ordinary people. 'When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, @BJP4Karnataka shouted in the streets and called it 'anti-people'. But now, when the @BJP4India-led Union government hikes railway fares, there is deafening silence. Why? Because this hike doesn't help farmers or the poor--it only helps the BJP government fill its own coffers,' he added. Siddaramaiah also drew a comparison with the Bengaluru Metro fare hike, accusing the BJP of blaming the state government despite the hike being recommended by a central committee. 'When metro fares were hiked in Karnataka after 8 years, BJP leaders rushed to blame the Congress government, ignoring the fact that the fare hike decision was taken by a fare fixation committee constituted by the Union Government itself. Back then, the Centre manipulated the narrative to place the burden on us. Now, with this railway fare hike, who will they place the burden on?' he said. The Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of passenger train fares, which came into effect on July 1, 2025. As per the new structure, fares for non-suburban ordinary second-class coaches will increase by half a paisa per kilometre for journeys exceeding 500 km. This means a fare increase of Rs 5 for journeys between 501-1500 km, Rs 10 for 1501-2500 km, and Rs 15 for 2501-3000 km. Sleeper and first-class fares will also rise by the same per-kilometre rate. Mail and express trains will see second-class fares rise by one paisa per kilometre, with proportionate increases for other classes. However, fares for suburban trains and season tickets will remain unchanged. (ANI)

Congress rules out leadership change in Karnataka, S Jaishankar slams terrorism at Quad meet

The Congress party in Karnataka is experiencing internal tensions regarding the chief ministership. MLA Iqbal Hussain claims that over 100 of 136 Congress legislators support Deputy CM DK Shivakumar taking over as CM. He alleges that the party high command had agreed to a 2.5-year term each for current CM Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. However, the party's state in-charge Randeep Surjewala has dismissed any talk of leadership change. Siddaramaiah's supporters insist he will complete his full 5-year term until 2028. This situation raises questions about Congress' ability to balance its OBC and Vokkaliga vote bases ahead of future elections. While the party maintains a united front publicly, political analysts suggest underlying differences remain. In other news, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a strong statement on terrorism at the Quad Foreign Ministers meeting in Washington DC. He emphasized that the world must display zero tolerance towards terrorism and victims should never be equated with perpetrators. Jaishankar asserted India's right to defend its people against terrorism and expects Quad partners to understand this position. His remarks come in the context of recent experiences and amid reports of Pakistan's army chief being hosted at the White House. The minister also mentioned India's plans to host the next Quad Summit and proposals to make it productive. This statement underscores India's consistent stance on terrorism and sends a clear message to Quad partners, especially the United States, on India's expectations regarding counterterrorism efforts.
